The fence 35 is secured tothe-rotatable head 25, by screws or'similar means 35, said fence having a work-guiding surface ,31. -The head 25 is supported upon an arcuate annular rib .24 formed on the bracket [9, said rib'fitting slidably within a corresponding groove 26 in said head, whereby thehead 25 may be rotated about the center of the said finer rib 24' to thereby carry the fence 35 to any desired angular inclination with respect to the top surface of the work tables l2 and l3,:said head being securable to the bracket 19 in the desired angular position by means of the screwlZlhaving the operating handle 28, and by the sca1e8l.

Tautz No. 1,790,288, dated January 27, 1931, and are included here merely to complete the disclosure and assist in showing how the present invention cooperates with a jointer, particularly one of the type disclosed in said prior patent. A guard I having a'pivot shaft 2 therein, coacting with a lug 3 on the table I2, may be provided to guard the left hand portion of the cutter blades, that is, theport-ion shown atthe' left hand side in Fig. 3 and shown at the bottom in Fig. 1. In -jointers of :the type :disclosed in ,the prior patent, even when'providedwith aguard such as shown at l,..in the present case, there is no protection :whatever against accidental contact :of .the .hand or clothing of the :operator with thec'unused or. right hand end of the cutter, namely, the-portion extending to therightof .the fence in .i-Fig. :3 of-the present case. It:is obviousthat inasmuch as, ordinarily, relatively thin boards arebeing-planed'inv an endwise position upon the jointer,- the fence-would often be fairly close to the:leftzh'and edge of the table, thus leaving a considerable portion of thecutterto'the right of :the'saicl fence absolutely unprotected in any way. This isparticularly :the case when the jointer is being used for cutting rabbets, because-in such 'rabbetting operations the jointer fence must necessarily be near the left hand edge of the'table, inasmuch as the width of the 'ra'bbet is determined by the .distance of such fenceifrom' such-left'hand edge andmost'rabbets are relatively. narrow.i

The lower slotted web 10, of this bar 61, provides a guideway which permits the bar 51 to slide along over the shank of the bolt 68, which has a wing .nut 69 cooperating therewith, the head 'H 'of said bolt gripping over said portion so that by loosening the wing nut 69 the bar 61 may be slid along to a desired position of adjustment, whereupon tightening the wing nut 69 willserve to secure the member 61 in its adjusted position. The Supports or buttons 64 and 65 will prevent the lazy tongs 59 from assuming too low a position, where the bars thereof might come into contact with the cutter head or might permit accidental access of the fingers or clothing of the operator to said cutter head. It will be understood, of course, that the number of bars in said lazy tongs may be chosen suificient to make the intervening unguarded spaces as small as may be believed desirable in any particular case. The bar 33 in this form of the device'will operate as a support forthe-fence 35'precisely as does the identically constructed bar 33 of Fig. 6 sothat it is' believed to be unnecessary to again describe such operation.
' Referring now to Figs. 10, 11 and 12, it will be noted that both the bar and theguard have therein been made in two sections instead of in a single rnemberas inthe Figs. 1-6 forms. This has an advantage, in certain cases, in that the said guards, as. well as. the bars supporting them, will not'extend too far to the right when the fence 35 is in its extreme right hand position, this advantage being gained due to the telescoping or slidingaction of thetwo sections of the guard. The spring 58 is preferably secured to the upper bar 13 so as to hold the left hand end thereof against the arcuate portion 3| of the fence 35, as in the preceding forms, and it will, of course, be obvious that such connection will avoidundue variations in the length of the springwhen the fence 35 is moved to the left or to the right, as would be the case if the spring were secured to any other portion of the other bar 61 of the mechanism.
By loosening-the wing nut '52 it is possible to move-'the fence 35 to the left or the right when thescrew 20 is loosened, to an extent corresponding to the'motion permitted by the bar 13. In such adjustment thesection 12 of the guard will move back and forth across the top ofthe section 66; w
For a greater, motion of the fence '35 to the right, the wing nut 69 may also be loosened, thus permitting both bars, namely, 61 and i3, jointly to nave-"to the right, and thus also permitting the full rightward motion of the said fence.
The fence 35 can, of course, be tilted just as in the other forms of the device and the spring 58 will provide continuous abutment of the end 19 of said bar 13 against the arcuate portion 3| of the fence, as in the preceding forms. When the fence 35 has been adjusted into its desired position and clamped there by the screws 2!! and 21, the additional supporting feature of the bars 13 and 61 may be secured by tightening the wing nuts 52 and 69.
It is obvious, furthermore, that when additional support of the jointer fence is not particularly necessary, as when the jointer is being used for relatively light cuts, or light workpieces, it will not be necessary to take the trouble to tighten the clamping means which hold the various supports in the different forms of the device.
Thus, the device shown in Figs. 1 to 5 may often be used with perfect satisfaction by leaving the star wheel 32 slightly loosened, whereupon the guard 8 will still perform its function of guarding the unused portion of the cutter head but will not perform the stiffening or supporting function, and similarly in the forms shown in Figs. 7 to 12,
of the machine for light work and eliminates unnecessary manipulations, while it does" not in any Way interfere with again quickly obtaining the supporting function by 'merely tightening the various nuts or screws when such feature is desired,
The Fig. 6 form, of course, is of no utility unless the clamping feature provided by the bolt-5| and wing nut 52 is used, because this form does not embody the guarding structure.
It will be obvious that the present invention provides two separate and distinct functions which are, however, produced by unitary or close ly combined structures, namely, the guarding function and the supporting function, but, nevertheless, these functions may be used either jointly or independently, in certain cases. It should therefore be understood thattheinvention is not limited to either of these features separately or to both in combination, but that the invention is defined solely by the following claims.
I claim: b 1. In a machine having a table, a mechanically driven cutter and a work guide, means for supporting said guide and other means separate from said guide for guarding the entire unused portion of the cutter and simultaneously unyieldably supporting the work guide against springing laterally due to a workpiece. V 2. In a machine having a table, a'mechanically driven cutter and a work guide, said work guide being movable over the table in a direction substantially transverse to the direction of cut of the cutter, means for guarding the used portion of the cutter on one side of said work guide and further means for supporting the work guide and guarding the entire unused portion of 'the cutter on the other side of said work guide, said last named means being separate from the guide, and providing support against lateral springing of the guide toward said other side.

In a machine havinga table, a. mechanical ly driven cutter and a work guide, said work guide being movable over the table in a direc tion substantially transverse to the direction of out of the cutter, means for guarding the cutter on one side of said work guide and further means separate from the guide for guarding the entire. length of the cutter on the other side of said.

4. In a machine having a table, a mechanically driven cutter and a work guidasaid work guide being movable over the table in a direction substantially transverse to the direction of cut of the cutter, means for guarding the cutter on one side o-f said work guide and means independent of the guide but engaging the other side of said work guide and thus providing auxiliary unyielding support for the latter to prevent lateral springing of said guide toward said other side.
5. In a machine having a table, a mechanically driven cutter and a work guide, extensible means for guarding the cutter and means connected thereto for supporting the work guide against lateral yield, said extensible means remaining at the same level whether collapsed or extended.
