Application August 14,
1934, serial No. '139,'173
2 Claims (C1. 22o- 57) This invention relates to lids and fasteners therefor especially adapted for garbage cans and similar containers and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will be self-locking to the can when applied thereto for preventing dogs and other animals from opening the can and dumping the contents and is so constructed that simple manual actuation is only needed to remove the lid from the can.
With these and other objects in View this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a can or container with a lid applied thereto and equipped with a self-locking fastener, said lid and fastener forming present invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the lid showing the fastener.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a container having a bead 2 about the mouth thereof. The can I is closed by a removable cover 3 of the flanged type and equipped centrally thereof with a handle 4 to facilitate the applying and removing of the lid from the can.`
The lid or cover 3 is provided with diametrically opposed offsets 5 in the flange thereof to form pockets 6. Brackets "I are secured to the inner `face of the lid and slidably support bars 8, the outer ends of which are in the form of hooks 9 receivable Within the pockets Si. Pins I are lsecured to the bars and interposed between said pins and the brackets upon the bars are coil springs Il acting to urge the bars in the direction ofy each other to bring the hooks 9 in engagement with the bead 2 of the can and thereby effectively secure the lid to the can against acci. dental displacement.
A guard I2 is secured to the inner face of the lid and slidably supports thebars and the latter have their opposing ends beveled, as shown at I3, to Ybe engaged by a wedge-shaped element I4 secured to a plunger I5. The plunger and the subject matter of the wedge-shaped elementv I4 slide within a housing I6 secured to the cover and said cover also eX- tends through an; opening in the handle 4 and has secured to its outer end a finger piece Il. A person grasping the handle 4 may readily press the plunger I5 inwardly and due to the wedge-shaped element I4- the bars will be moved against the action of the springs disengaging the hooks 9 from the bead of the can, said hooks moving into the pockets 6- so that the lid may be readily lifted 10 from the can. As soon as pressure is released from the plunger I5, the bars are returned to their initial position by the influence of the springs Il, being limitedin their endwise movement towards each other by the tapered end of 15 the wedge-shaped element I4. The lid then may be positioned on the can and with a light pressure applied thereto the hooks 9 will snap over the bead and again rmly secure the lid to the can. Having described the invention, I claim:
l. In combination with an open can having a bead about its opening, a flangediid to close the open can, oppositely extending bars slidably supported to the lid and having hook-shaped ends to 25 engage with the bead, spring means'urging the bars in a direction to engage the hook-shaped ends thereof with the bead, a plunger slidably supported by the lid and having a wedge-shaped portion to engage the adjacent ends of saidbar, 30 a handle secured to the vlid and having an opening to slidably receive the plunger, said lid having offsets to form pockets for receiving the hookshaped ends of said bars.
2. In combination with an open can having a 35 beadabout its opening, a flanged lid to close the opencan, oppositely extending bars slidably supported to the lid and having hook-shaped ends to engage with the bead, spring means urging the bars in a direction to engage the hook-shaped 40 ends thereof with the bead, a plunger slidably supported by the lid and having a wedge-shaped portion to engage the adjacent ends of said bar,
a handle secured to the lid and having an opening to slidably receive the plunger, said lid hav- 45 ing offsets to form pockets yfor receiving the hookshaped ends of said bars, and a guard secured to the lid and slidably supporting the bars.
