Description
. LOOM REED AND METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ITS MANUFACTURE Patented July 16, 1935 l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOOM REED AND METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ITS MANUFACTURE Arno Hornig, Pawtucket, It. I.
Application November 22, 1933, Serial No. 699,207

In order to solder a bars preferably include the preferably substanspiral spring to a pitch bar reed immediately tially heini-cylindrical Wooden strips I6 having inside of the pitch bars without melting the the flat inner sides I8 adapted to abut the dents pitch bars,'I have devised the novel method and preferably at points equi-distantly spaced from apparatus shown and described herein for so the ends thereof and arcuate outer sides 20. In 60 doing. I have found in practice that this is an my preferred embodiment, the outer sides of the extremely difficult thing to do, namely, to apply wooden strips I6 are preferably provided with the the solder evenly to each side of the spring to longitudinal grooves 22 therein adapted to rerigidly secure it to the dents without causing ceive the reinforcing metal strips 24 Which'extend the heat of soldering to melt the pitch bars and longitudinally of said grooves substantially to the 55 `of the dents together at points spaced from the ends thereof, comprising wooden strips having at inner sides abutting opposite portions of said dent ends at points equidistantly spaced from the ends thereof and arcuate outer sides having longitudinal grooves therein, reinforcing metal strips extending longitudinally in said grooves, cord means spirally wound around said strips having winds thereof vextending between the dents, a pitch covering for said strips and cord means and a paper covering over said pitch bars, rigid end members having cylindrical caps at each end thereof enclosing the ends of said pitch bars including said wooden and metal strips, spiral spring means having winds thereof interposed between adjacent dents inside of said pitch bars, metal strips extending longitudinally within the outer segmental portions of said spiral spring means and over said end members, and solder means joining said metal strips and spiral spring means to each other and to said dents and end members on each side thereof inside of said nexible pitch bars whereby the flexibility of said dents is increased.
3. A loom reed comprising spaced dents, longitudinal pitch bars fiexibly joining opposite ends of the dents together, comprising wooden strips having flat inner sides abutting opposite portions of said dent ends and arcuate outer'sides, cord means spirally Wound around said strips having winds thereof extending between the dents, a
:pitch covering for said strips and cord means,
spiral spring means having Winds thereof interposed between adjacent dents inside of said pitch bars, and solder means joining said spiral spring means to said dents on each side thereof inside of said iiexible pitch bars whereby the flexibility of said dents is increased.
4. The steps in the method of making loom reeds which comprise, attaching pitch bars to the dent ends to iiexibly join them together, interposing winds of a spiral spring between said dents inside of said pitch bars, and applying solder to each side of said springs to rigidly secure them to said dents to provide rigid fulcrums therefor without melting said pitch bars.
5. A loom reed comprising spaced dents, longitudinally extending means exibly joining opposite ends of the dents together, comprising wooden strips having fiat inner sides abutting opposite portions of said dent ends and arcuate outer sides, cord means spirally wound around said strips having winds thereof extending between the dents, spiral spring means having winds thereof interposed between adjacent dents inside of said strips, and solder means joining said spiral spring means to said dents on each side thereof inside of said wooden strips, whereby the flexibility of said dents is increased.
