The present invention relates to games and has for an object theprovision of a novel and improved appliance for playing a game of chance which will be interesting and amusing, and which will g readily adapt itself as a medium for selling goods or merchandise in stores and the like.

The present device is of the punch board type, wherein there is provided a casing within which are arranged a plurality of concealed sheets or cards, each bearing an array of individual markings, said sheets or cards are adapted to be fed one at a time up to a position directly below a punch board having a series of blank perforations registering with the said markings on the sheet. Said blank perforations are adapted to permit the passage therethrough of a punch for punching the sheet or card. The punched sheet may then be moved to a position where its surface will be visible for observ- The markings provided on the sheet may be in the form of fortune telling indicia, whereby the device may be used to tell fortunes. Also the device is suitably adapted for use in the playing of many amusing and entertaining games by providing on the cards suitable instructions, which instructions when punched by a player, said player will be required to carry the some out in the playing of the game. Thus, said cards may hear such notation as Let John Doe hide in the Kitchen and a plurality of other similar notations, and the particular notation punched by the player will be the thing that is required of this player to do.

The device has novel mechanism for storing a stack of cards or sheets and for moving the same one at a time to proper position, below the punch board for permitting the punching of the same.

The device is also provided with novel mechanism 40 for moving the punched sheet to a position where its surface will be visible and for maintaining it in said position until the same is ready to be discarded and a second sheet moved into position ready to receive the punching operation. There is also provided a novel mechanism for preventing the punching of the sheet until the proper operation of the coin mechanism and for preventing the movement of the sheet from its concealed position until the sheet had been punched.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description'proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features. of I construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, pro- 10 portion, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

For the purpose of facilitating an understanding 1 V of my invention, I have illustrated in the accompaying drawings, a preferred embodiment thereof, from an inspection of which when considered in connection with the following description, my invention, its mode of construction, assembly and 20 operation, and many of its advantages should be readily understood and appreciated.

Referring to the drawings in which the same characters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding or similar parts throughout the several figures of the drawings:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a game device embodying the present invention;

Referring to the drawings more specifically by characters of reference, the letter A designates generally a casing made up of any suitable material such as sheet metal or the like, and being 55 preferably of substantially L-shaped formation, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thus providing a horizontally arranged portion B and a vertical portion set back designated by the letter C. The lower portion B has a floor I, front wall II, the side walls l2 and the top wall IS.

The entire front wall of the casing may be formed from a single piece of sheet metal, the lower portion of which will form the vertical wall II which is spaced by the horizontally arranged portion l3 from the front wall H of the portion C and the uppermost portion of the front wall I4 is then bent backwardly upon itself at right angles thereto to form the top wall Id of the portion C. The side walls l2 are provided with vertical extensions l6which form the side walls of the portion C of the casing, all of said walls being rigidly riveted to each other and to the floor ID to completely closethe casing except for the rear wall thereof.

The rear wall of the casing may be closed by a suitable plate member H which is provided adjacent its lower edge with a bracket ll adapted to snap over an upstanding flange provided on the floor ill, as shown in Figs. 2 and. 3 of the drawings, the upper portion of the plate having secured thereto a suitable lock it which co-operates with a bracket I9 secured to the top wall I5 of the casing for locking the rear plate to the casing, thereby preventing unauthorized access to the inside of the casing.

Rigidly secured to the side walls of the easing is a horizontally disposed plate, generally designated by the reference character at, said plate being spaced from the inner surface of the wall it and forms the supporting member for the mechanism which will now be described.

Supported on said member 28 is a magazine 2i which is adapted for receiving and holding in stacked relation a plurality of sheets or cards 22, each of which is provided with a desired array of markings, such, for example, as that illustrated in Fig. 9, which consist of a plurality of squares designated by the reference character 23. Within some of these marked oif squares are provided numbers or other indicia, said numbers designating the value of the particular square and the indicia indicating instructions for the player to follow. It will be noted that the markings provided on said card may be of any desired form or character and that either one or all of said squares may be provided with a suitable number designating its value or suitable indicia designating certain things for the player to do.

The magazine 2| is rigidly secured at its lower edge to the plate member 26 as by means of the screws 24 shown in Fig. 5, said plate forming the floor or bottom wall for the magazine. The upper portion of the magazine may be secured in any suitable manner to the bracket l9, such, for example, by means of the screws or rivets 25 shown in Fig. 2, whereby the said magazine will be rigidly secured within the casing.

As shown in Fig. 5, the magazine consists of three walls and is of a cross sectional shape adapted for receiving therein the cards 22 in stacked relation. Access to the magazine may be had through the rear thereof, which rear may be closed by a suitable plate 26,which plate is locked in place after the cards have been disposed within the magazine. Thus as shown in Fig. 2, the

The rear plate 26 may be provided with a series of openings placed at different levels therein through which openings may be observed the size of the stack of cards within the magazine. A suitable weight 33 may be provided in the magazine disposed upon the stack of cards to facilitate the proper feeding of the cards in a manner to be presently more fully described.

Mounted for sliding movement on the underside of the plate is a plunger, generally designated by the reference character 34, a plan view of which is shown in Fig. 4, said plunger being provided adjacent its rear end with a vertical extension 35 received within the slot 36 provided therefor within the plate 26, said slot 36 forming a guide for the plunger in its reciprocal movement relative to the plate 20. The thickness of the extension 35 is equal to the combined thickness of the plate 34 and plate 20, and secured to the upper face of said extension 35 is a relatively thin plate member 31 which is disposed in the plane of the lowermost card arranged in the magazine.

When in one position the said plate 31 is adapted to be received in the space between the plate member 20 and the plate 3!, the latter being spaced from the plate member 26 by means of the plates 37 mounted one on each side of the siot 26, as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings. The piate 3'1] is of such a size that it will be disposed at one side of the magazine when the plunger 34 is at the end of its forward stroke, as shown in Fig. 4, but will assume the original position of the transferred lowermost sheet or card when the plunger is at the end of its return stroke, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus the free end of the extension plate 31 will be efiective for impinging upon the edge of the lowermost sheet in the stack to move the same in the direction of the punch board as will be hereinafter more fully described.

The other end of the plunger 34 is bifurcated to form the legs 38, and said legs rest upon a bracket 39 spaced from the underside of the plate 2t and rigidly secured thereto by means of the screws it, said bracket 39 forming a support for the free end of the plunger 34. The bracket 39 is provided with a vertical extension 4| intermediate its ends, which extension is received between the bifurcation 38, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Suitable side extensions 42 are formed integral with the plunger 34, said side extensions cooperating with studs 43 rigidly secured to the plate member 20 for limiting the movement of said plunger in either direction.

Mounted on the plate 20 and rigidly secured thereto just beyond the magazine 2| is a plate member N, which member is spaced from the plate 20 by means of the plates 45, as shown in Fig. 8, thus producing a guide or space for permitting the passage of the concealed card or sheet from the magazine to the position directly below the punch board.

Mounted upon said plate 44 for sliding movement thereon is a. suitable barrier plate 46, said barrier plate being provided with the depending side portions 41, to each one of which is secured one end of a coil spring 48, the other end of which coil spring is secured to a suitable stud 9 attached to a fixed portion of the casing. Said coil springs are adapted to normally urge said barrier plate 46 to a position where the opening 50 provided therein will be out of alignment with the openings 5| provided in the punch board 52, which punch board is rigidly secured and held in place against the underside of the wall (3 with the openings 5t therein in alignment with suitable openings 53 provided in said wall l3. The plate M is also povided with openings 54 in alignment with said openings 5| and similarly the plate 20 is provided with openings. 55 also arranged in alignment with the openings 5! and 5t. Thus when the plunger 33 is at the end of its return stroke,

as shown in Fig. 2, the plate 45 will form a bearrier between the card and thepunch board, thereby preventing a punching of the card.

However, when the plunger is moved to the end of its forward. stroke or the position shown in Fig. 4, the extensions 56 and 51 provided on the plunger will engage the depending extensions dl of the barrier plate 46 and move the latter againstthe action or the coil springs 48 to a position where the openings Ell in said barrier plate will move into alignment with the openings 5t and in the punch board and plate 44, respectively, thereby permitting the passage of the punch to the sheet disposed below the plate dd. When the plunger has been moved to the end of its return stroke, it will be noted that the springs dd will be effective for carrying the barrier plate lit back to the position shown in Fig. 2.

To operate the plunger M there is provided a coin controlled mechanism, generally designated by the reference character 58, which may be of the usual and well known construction and which is secured in the front ,walls ll by means of the plate 59. Tosaid coin controlled lever til is secured a right angled extension (it, the free end of which is adapted to ride upon a bracket (-52 having a shelf 63, said bracket being disposed adjacent the side wall of the casing and the shelf is adapted to support the free end of the horizontally disposed extension ti, as shown in Fig. d of the drawings.

The extension til is provided with a pair of upstanding spaced iugs tit and till, which lugs are disposed directly below the plunger 36 and are in alignment with a punched out depending lug 56 provided on the plunger 3%. Thus when the coin controlled mechanism is actuated to permit the lever lid to be moved in one direction,'the upstanding lug ti l will engage with the depending lug (it or" theplunger to move the plunger to the end of its forward stroke, and when the lever kill is pulled back by means of the operating handle ill on the coin controlled mechanism, the upstanding lug $35 will engage the depending lug 66 on the plunger a l to move the latter to the free end of its return stroke.

In order to properly punch the card or sheet disposed below the punch board 52, I provide a punch, generally designated by the reference character till, which comprises a casing 69 within member H is provided with a head 14 and the upper portion of the casing is provided with an annular flange 15. Thus by grasping the head 14 and flange 15 between the forefinger and thumb of one hand, the punching member or plunger H may be moved relative to the casing and when inserted in the openings 53 will be eflective for punching the card disposed below the punch board 52. This, of course, can only be done when the plunger 34 is at the end of its forward stroke, at which position it will be noted the barrier plate 45 will be in the position where the openings therein will be in alignment with the openings in the punch board. i

After the sheet has been punched, it is necessary to move the same to a position where the surface thereof may be readily observed in order to determine the particular marking punched by the player. Thus upon the return stroke oi? the. plunger 34, the punched sheet will be moved to position beyond the punch board and will drop onto the bifurcated portion oi the plunger t t,

so that when the return stroke of the plunger has been completed, the punched sheet will be in the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position it will be noted the surface thereof may be readily observed through an opening l5 provided in the wall it, which opening is closed by a suitable glass member ll. Through this glass member may be readily observed the surface or the punched sheet, as shown in Fig. 5, and the player is thus paid a sum equalling the number appearing in the square which was punched by him, or is called upon to perform a certain act required of him as indicated by the notation in the punched square.

When the coin controlled mechanism is again operated and the plunger dd moved to the end of dropping down into the casing until after the plunger has been moved to the end of its forward stroke; Thus the card will remain in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 5 where the surface thereof may be readily observed until such time as the mechanism has again been actuated and the plunger moved to the end of its forward stroke.

In order to prevent the movement of the plunger to the end of its return stroke before the card disposed below the punch board has been punched out by the player, I have provided a pivoted member 19, one end of which is pivotally secured by means of the screw till to 2. depending ear til provided on the plate 2%. Said member T9 is normally arranged so as to permit the extension ill on the coin lever 60 to pass beyond the same when moved towards the end of its forward stroke, but will prevent movement of the lever 68 upon its return stroke, as shown in. Fig. 6 of the drawings.

To permit the completion of the return stroke of the arm 6!, the member [8 is provided with a vertical extension 82 to which is secured one end of a coil spring 83, the other end of which spring is secured to a chain member 84. Said chain member passes through an opening 85 provided in the wall l4 and the free end of the chain is secured to the punching member H, as shown at 86. The vertical extension 82 on the member 19 is movable in the slot 01 provided on the plate member 20, and the downward movement of said member 19 is limited by a portion 88 provided on the vertical extension 82 engaging the plate member 20, as shown in Fig. 6.

Secured to the vertical extension 02 below the plate member 20 is a pivotally mounted member 99 pivoted, as shown at 90 and normally urged for movement in a clockwise direction by means of a coil spring 9!, one end of which is secured to astud 92 provided on the member 19, and the other end of which spring is secured to a stud 93 provided on the member 89. A pin 94 is secured to the member 19 for limiting the movement, of said member 89 in the clockwise direction. The member 89 is arranged so that when the same is at the end of its clockwise movement, the lower or nose portion 95 thereof will be in a plane below that of the lower portion of the member 19 and will rest on the member 6|, thus permitting said member to move to the end of its return stroke past the member 19. Thus when the plunger 34 is moved to the end of its forward stroke, the arm SI will carry with it against the tension of the spring 9i the member 09 and willhold the same in the position shown in Fig. 6.

Upon the actuation of the punching member 1 I, the member 19 will be-lifted above the member BI, thus permitting the spring iii to move the member 89 in a clockwise direction to its substantially vertical position, in which position it will rest upon the member 6| to permit movement of the same past the member I9 when a pull is exercised on the coin controlled lever 61. A coil spring 90 having one end thereof secured to the extension 82 and the other end secured to the end 20, as shown in Fig. 6, is provided for returning the member 19 after the punch 68 has been released by the player.

Associated with the device is also a gum vending mechanism which includes a receptacle 91 within which is adapted to be received a number of pieces of gum in the form of balls or the like, said receptacle being provided with an inclined floor 98 having an opening 99 through which said balls of gum may be fed one at a time by force of gravity. Disposed directly below said opening 99 is a radial disk I having on the circumference thereof arranged a series of spaced depressions or cups IOI within which is adapted to be received one of said balls of gum.

Secured to the disk I00 is a ratchet wheel I02, said disk being mounted for rotary movement on a shaft I03, which shaft is rigidly secured to a fixed portion of the casing. The shaft I03 has loosely mounted thereon a link or arm I04 to which is secured intermediate the ends thereof one end of a coil spring I05, as shown at I06, the other end of said spring being secured as shown at I01 to a fixed portion of the casing, said spring being efiective for normally urging said arm I04 in a, clockwise direction.

A pin I08 is provided on a fixed portion of the casing for limiting said clockwise movement of said arm I04. To the other end of the arm I04 is pivotally secured a pawl I09 having a depending leg portion IIO, said pawl being normally urged into engagement with the teeth on the ratchet wheel I02 by means of the spring III. A suitable guide member H2 is provided for directing the balls of gum towards the chute II! provided in the side wall I2 of the casing.

To the coin operated lever 80 is secured a depending lug portion II4 which is arranged in position to strike the lug portion H0 of the pawl I09 when the lever 60 has been moved to the end of its forward stroke. The engagement of the portion I II by the lug 1 I4 will be effective for imparting a rotary movement to the disk Hill, which movement will rotate said disk one -sixth of a complete revolution, thereby delivering one of said balls of gum into the chute II3. When the lever 60 is actuated to complete this return stroke, the spring I will move the arm I04 with its associated pawl member I09 back to the position shown in Fig. 3, in which position the pawl will again engage with one of the teeth of the ratchet wheel I02 andbe in position to again actuate the disk I00 for rotating the same to deliver a second ball of gum upon the further actuation of the coin controlled mechanism.

In order to permit the observation of the contents of the receptacle 91, the front thereof may be closed by a glass plate H5. The plate I3 may also be provided with an opening IIB closed by a glass plate through which may be observed the coin deposited in the coin slot. A suitable coin box I I1 may be disposed in the casing for receiving the coins deposited in the coin operated mechanism.

The operation of the device will now be described briefly: A coin is inserted in the coin mechanism and the handle 61 pushed in all the way, the actuation of this handle will move the plunger'34 to the end of its forward stroke by reason of the engagement of the lug 64 with the member 66. The mechanism will now be in the position shown in. Fig. 4, in which position the plate member 31 will be completely withdrawn from the magazine 2| and the barrier plate 46 will have been moved by the lugs 56 to a position where the openings therein will be in alignment with the openings in the punch board 52. Assuming now that the machine had been previously operated a sufficient number of times to move a card 22 in position below the punch board, another card between the last mentioned card and the magazine, that is in the embodiment illustrated there will always be two cards lying forwardly of the magazine and in the same plane with the lowermost card in the magazine.

The card disposed directly below the punch board is now ready to be punched. This is accomplished by grasping the punch 68. and pressing down on the plunger 1I until the same has been forced through the card. It will be noted that the player has a selection of nine openings 53 within which to insert the punch, each one of said openings corresponding to a marked oif square 23 provided on the card. It will also be noted at this time that when the plunger 34 was at the end of its forward stroke the member 19 was in the position shown in Fig. 6, thus preventing the return stroke of the plunger. However, upon the actuation of the punch 68, the

member 19 was actuated to bring. the same out of the path of the return stroke of the arm BI, so that the handle 61 of the coin mechanism may now be grasped and pulled out all of the way. This action will bring about the return stroke of the plunger 34, during which stroke the plate 31 will impinge upon the edge of the lowermost card in the magazine and move the same forward, said card in turn will impinge upon the card lying between it and the punch board, which latter card will impinge upon the punched card moving the some beyond the punch board, the punched card dropping onto the bifurcations 38 of the plunger.

When the return stroke of the plunger has been completed, the punched card will rest with its surface visible through the glass 1'! upon the forward end of the plunger 34. It will also be noted that upon the completion of the return stroke of the plunger the barrier plate 46 will be urged by the springs 8 to the position shown in Fig. 2. in which position it will prevent the punching oi the card disposed below the punch board. The player now observes the card which had been punched and ii the same is punched in one of the squares 23 bearing a number, the player is entitled to a. sum equalling the number in the square punched or is called upon to carry out a certein instruction as indicated by the notation in the punched square. on the other hand, if there is no number appearing in a square punched, the player gets nothing but the hall of gum which is released by the coin mechanism and is deposited in the chute lit, at the side oi the machine.

The machine is now ready for another forward stroke and may he operated by depositing another coin in the coin slot and the handle 61 pushed in for bringing shout the forward stroke of the plunger. This again moves the barrier piste to o position where it will permit the punching oi the curd disposed below the punch bourd.

What I claim and desire to secure hy Letters Patent of the United States is:

A game apparatus comprising a casing, a horizontally positioned concealed sheet therein and bearing on its upper surface an array of individual markings, a punch board over .the sheet and having a series of perforations for the selective passage of the punch to the sheet, the perforations registering with said markings, a magazine at one side of the sheet, a plate supporting the latter and extended to form a floor for the magazine, a stack of similar sheets in the magazine, a. window at the other side of the sheet, and means movable to impinge upon the lowermost sheet in the stack in the direction of the concealed sheet and effective to move the latter below the window and so to a position where its said surface is visible through the window.

20. The structure of claim 1, a coin control for said means, a punch barrier between the punch board and the sheet, and means effective to remove said barrier before the movement of the sheet occurs.
