Description
- 1. Field of the Invention
- This invention relates to torque arm assemblies for backstopping clutches and, more particularly, to a torque arm assembly that facilitates load sharing among multiple backstop assemblies within a larger system.

- In many motor driven systems, it is desirable to prevent or limit movement of system components in one direction. For example, and with reference to
FIG. 1 , mining operations typically useinclined conveyors 10 to conveymaterial 12 to a surface location or other outlet. It is desirable to prevent or limit reverse movement of theconveyor 10 in the event of a loss of power or a failure of a driveline component such as themotor 14 or motors, gearboxes or couplings in order to preventmaterial 12 from moving backwards on theconveyor 10 and causing damage to the system and significant injuries to personnel operating the system. -
Backstopping clutches 16 are typically used to prevent reverse rotation of rotating system components. Referring toFIGS. 1 and 2 , eachclutch 16 includes aninner race 18 that is mounted to ashaft 20 driven by one ormore motors 14 for rotation with theshaft 20 about arotational axis 22. Anouter race 24 is disposed radially outward of theinner race 18 and is generally fixed against rotation. A plurality ofrollers 26 are disposed radially between the inner andouter races races springs 28. Therollers 26 and/or agroove 30 inouter race 24 are shaped such that when themotor 14 drives theshaft 20 andinner race 18 in one rotational direction, therollers 26 assume a first position permitting relative rotation of the inner andouter races shaft 20 andinner race 18 are driven in the opposite rotational direction (e.g. by the force of the load ofmaterial 12 upon failure of motor 14), therollers 26 assume a second position and forcefully engage the inner andouter races inner race 18 and drivenshaft 20 from rotating relative to the fixedouter race 24. - Referring again to
FIG. 1 , theouter race 24 of eachbackstopping clutch 16 may be fixed against rotation using atorque arm assembly 32. Theassembly 32 includes ahead 34 that is connected to theouter race 24 of the clutch. Anarm 36 extends from the head and is fixed at aremote end 38 to a stationary structure 39 (e.g., support structure for the conveyor 10).Arm 36 is integral withhead 34 or rigidly coupled tohead 34. - Conventional torque arm assemblies such as
assembly 32 have several disadvantages. The rigid nature of thetorque arm assembly 32 results in instantaneous engagement of the outer andinner races clutch 16 and therefore requires thatclutch 16 be designed to absorb the maximum load on theconveyor 10. Accordingly, theclutches 16 are relatively expensive. This is particularly problematic in systems incorporatingmultiple motors 14 andclutches 16. In large conveyor systems or in other applications, multiplebackstopping clutches 16 may be disposed on asingle shaft 20 and/or clutches may be required for multiple motor drivenshafts 20. There is also no mechanism for indicating the load onclutch 16 and no mechanism for releasing load or tension onclutch 16. Some torque arm assemblies have been devised to enable load sharing among multiple clutches in large systems. Referring toFIG. 1 , these type of assemblies have typically employed a rubber pad, spring, or hydraulic cylinder seated betweenend 36 of the arm and thestationary structure 39. Although these assemblies enable some form of load sharing by delaying engagement of the inner andouter races clutch 16, the assemblies require costly modifications to thesupport structure 39. Further, the assemblies do not provide means for lead sensing or releasing load or tension on theclutch 16. - The inventors herein have recognized a need for a torque arm assembly for a backstopping clutch that will minimize and/or eliminate one or more of the above-identified deficiencies.
- The present invention provides an improved torque arm assembly for a backstopping clutch.
- A torque arm assembly in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention includes a head member configured for connection to an outer race of the backstopping clutch, the head member defining first and second spaced attachment points. The assembly further includes an arm member configured for connection to a stationary structure proximate a first end of the arm member and pivotally connected to the first attachment point of the head member proximate a second end of the arm member. The assembly further includes a strut coupled at a first end to the second attachment point of the head member and at a second end to the arm member. In accordance with another embodiment of the invention, the assembly may include a sensor or a graduated load indicator scale disposed between the head member and arm member and configured to indicate the distance between the head member and arm member and, therefore, the load on the clutch and torque arm assembly. In accordance with my another embodiment of the invention, a strut seat on the arm member is adjustable along an axis of the strut to enable a controlled release of the load or tension on the clutch and torque arm assembly. In yet another embodiment of the invention, a damper is connected at one end to the head member and at a second end to the arm member and is used with the strut to tune the assembly for controlled reaction of system forces.
- A torque arm assembly in accordance with the present invention represents a significant improvement relative to conventional assemblies. The assembly enables a controlled, limited motion of the outer race of the clutch thereby delaying clutch engagement and enabling load sharing among clutches and torque arm assemblies in large systems. Further, the assembly enables load sharing without requiring expensive modifications to existing systems. The assembly also provides an indication of load on each assembly and enables a controlled release of load or tension on the clutch and assembly. The assembly further enables tuning of the assembly to control reaction to forces in the system in which the assembly is employed.

Referring toFIG. 4 ,spring 106 is coupled at a first end to plate 54 ofhead member 42 atattachment point 74. Referring toFIGS. 4-6 ,spring 106 may be disposed about a threadedshaft 108 extending between aclevis 110 and strutseat 84. Referring toFIG. 4 , clevis 110 is pivotally connected toarm 88 ofplate 54 atattachment point 74 through a bushing or bearing (not shown). When the direction of rotation ofshaft 20 andinner race 18 ofclutch 16 is reversed due, for example, to the load on the system following a failure ofmotor 14, therollers 26 will couple inner andouter races assembly 40 through the use ofstrut 46, however, will allow a limited reverse rotation of outer race 24 (and thereforeinner race 18 and shaft 20). The rotation may be less than two degrees in one embodiment of the invention. The degree of rotation, however, can be adjusted based on the selection of thestrut 46. The limited rotation provides additional time forother clutches 16 in the system to engage and therefore enables load sharing amongassemblies 40 in a larger system. As a result, the clutch 16 does not have to be designed to absorb the maximum loading on the system and less expensive clutches can be employed. The inventive system also enables controlled load sharing because the amount of rotation can be adjusted through selection ofstrut 46. Referring toFIG. 7 ,sensor 114 may comprise a linear voltage displacement transducer connected betweenattachment point 74 or another point onarm 68 ofplate 54 ofhead member 42 andtransition portion 90 ofarm member 44.Sensor 114 may display the relative distance or indication of load or may transmit a signal to a remote processor or display. Referring toFIG. 8 , a graduatedload indicator scale 116 may alternatively be connected betweenattachment point 74 or another point onarm 68 ofplate 54 ofhead member 42 andtransition portion 90 ofarm member 44 to provide a visual indication of the relative distance or indication of load.Scale 116 may be arranged in parallel withstrut 46. Referring toFIG. 9 , a graduatedload indicator scale 112 may alternatively he formed onshaft 108 arranged coaxially withspring 106 to reduce the number of components. - A
torque arm assembly 40 in accordance with the present invention represents a significant improvement relative to conventional assemblies. Theassembly 40 enables load sharing amongmultiple assemblies 40 by allowing a limited, controlled reverse rotation of theouter race 24 of backstopping clutch 16 to thereby provide time forother clutches 16 andassemblies 40 to absorb a portion of the load. Moreover, load sharing is accomplished without the need for expensive modifications to the system support structure (e.g.,support structure 39 of conveyor 10). The inventive assembly further enables a controlled release of load or tension on the clutch andassembly 40 by permitting movement of oneseat 84 of thestrut 46. The assembly further enables sensing of the load on the clutch 16 orassembly 40. - While the invention has been shown and described with reference to one or more particular embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those of skill in the art that various changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
