Furthermore, any embodiment discussed and identified as being “preferred” is considered to be part of a best mode contemplated for carrying out the present invention. Other embodiments also may be discussed for additional illustrative purposes in providing a full and enabling disclosure of the present invention. Moreover, many embodiments, such as adaptations, variations, modifications, and equivalent arrangements, will be implicitly disclosed by the embodiments described herein and fall within the scope of the present invention.
- Accordingly, while the present invention is described herein in detail in relation to one or more embodiments, it is to be understood that this disclosure is illustrative and exemplary of the present invention, and is made merely for the purposes of providing a full and enabling disclosure of the present invention. The detailed disclosure herein of one or more embodiments is not intended, nor is to be construed, to limit the scope of patent protection afforded the present invention, which scope is to be defined by the claims and the equivalents thereof. It is not intended that the scope of patent protection afforded the present invention be defined by reading into any claim a limitation found herein that does not explicitly appear in the claim itself.
- Thus, for example, any sequence(s) and/or temporal order of steps of various processes or methods that are described herein are illustrative and not restrictive. Accordingly, it should be understood that, although steps of various processes or methods may be shown and described as being in a sequence or temporal order, the steps of any such processes or methods are not limited to being carried out in any particular sequence or order, absent an indication otherwise. Indeed, the steps in such processes or methods generally may be carried out in various different sequences and orders while still falling within the scope of the present invention. Accordingly, it is intended that the scope of patent protection afforded the present invention is to be defined by the appended claims rather than the description set forth herein.
- Additionally, it is important to note that each term used herein refers to that which the Ordinary Artisan would understand such term to mean based on the contextual use of such term herein. - When used herein to join a list of items, “or” denotes “at least one of the items,” but does not exclude a plurality of items of the list. Thus, reference to “a picnic basket having cheese or crackers” describes “a picnic basket having cheese without crackers”, “a picnic basket having crackers without cheese”, and “a picnic basket having both cheese and crackers.” Finally, when used herein to join a list of items, “and” denotes “all of the items of the list.” Thus, reference to “a picnic basket having cheese and crackers” describes “a picnic basket having cheese, wherein the picnic basket further has crackers,” as well as describes “a picnic basket having crackers, wherein the picnic basket further has cheese.”
- Referring now to the drawings, one or more preferred embodiments of the present invention are next described. The following description of one or more preferred embodiments is merely exemplary in nature and is in no way intended to limit the invention, its implementations, or uses.
-
FIGS. 1 to 3 show abag 10 in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. Thebag 10 comprises two parallelrectangular side panels 12 that form the body of thebag 10. Thepanels 12 are connected atbottom edges 14 and side edges 16 thereof.Top edges 18 of theside panels 12 are not connected in order to leave anopening 20 at a top 22 of thebag 10 for items to be placed therein. It is preferred that theside panels 12 be constructed of a pliable, lightweight material such as plastic. Theside panels 12 may be of any shape that allows for side edges 16 andbottom edges 14 thereof to be connected to form the body of thebag 10. - The
bag 10 includes aclosure mechanism 24 comprising twoperforated lines 26 located near the top 22 of thebag 10, with oneperforated line 26 in each of theside panels 12. More specifically, eachperforated line 26 is generally located centrally between the side edges 16 and is disposed in a generally parallel orientation relative to thetop edge 18 of itsrespective panel 12. Theperforated lines 26 are spaced a predetermined distance from thetop edges 18 of theside panels 12. Furthermore, theperforated lines 26 are generally horizontally and vertically aligned with one another when thepanels 12 are laid flat in a parallel orientation. The length of theperforated lines 26 does not extend the entire width between theside panels 12, whereby areas of theside panels 12 on either side of theperforated lines 26 are not perforated. - The
bag 10 further includes twoapertures 28 formed in theside panels 12, with oneaperture 28 defined by a cutout in the material of the side panel at a location that is generally located centrally between the side edges 16. Moreover, in thebag 10 in accordance with this particular preferred embodiment, theaperture 28 is formed such that theperforated line 26 of thepanel 12 intersects theaperture 28 as perhaps best shown inFIG. 3 . As such, each of thepanels 12 has anaperture 28 disposed therein. Eachaperture 28 furthermore preferably is configured to receive a finger therethrough. - Additionally, the
bag 10 includes a two-ply area 30 at the top 22 defined between thetop edge 18 and the line shown in phantom in eachpanel 12. The two-ply area 30 is formed by atop portion 32 of eachside panel 12 being folded over inwardly at the top 22 of thebag 10. In thebag 10 in accordance with this particular embodiment of the invention, the height of the two-ply area 30 is slightly less than the offset distance of theperforated lines 26 from thetop edges 18 of theside panels 12; therefore, the folded overportions 32 of theside panels 12 do not overlap theperforated lines 26. On the other hand, the folded overportions 32 doe intersect theapertures 28 of theside panels 12 in this particular embodiment. - It will also be understood that, in alternative constructions in accordance with the present invention, the two-
ply area 30 may be formed by thetop portion 32 of each of theside panels 12 being folded over outwardly at the top 22 of thebag 10. - The two-
ply area 30 may be secured in place by any of various methods, including for example, but not limited to, heat sealing, thermowelding, ultrasonic welding, and use of adhesives. - As shown in
FIGS. 4 and 5 , theperforated lines 26 may be torn by a person using thebag 10 to formhandle members 34 in theside panels 12 of thebag 10. A person simply inserts one or more fingers through theapertures 28 and pulls upwardly, thereby tearing thebag 10 along theperforated lines 26 to form thehandle members 34, with onehandle member 34 in eachside panel 12 of thebag 10. -
FIGS. 4 and 5 show a single finger of one hand being inserted through bothapertures 28 to pull and tear thebag 10 along theperforated lines 26. It will be understood that, after thebag 10 is torn along theperforated lines 26, the reference to 26 in the drawings is intended to indicate the resulting torn edges of thebag 10. Furthermore, it will be understood that there are numerous ways in which thebag 10 may be torn along theperforated lines 26 including for example, but not limited to, inserting one finger from each hand through anaperture 28 so that both hands are used; inserting a tool of some sort through bothapertures 28 so that no fingers are inserted through theapertures 28; or simply pulling on the two-ply areas 30 at the top 22 of thebag 10 without inserting any fingers or tools through theapertures 28. -
FIGS. 6 and 7 show thebag 10 after having been torn to form thehandle members 34. Because theperforated lines 26 have fixed lengths that do not extend the entire width of theside panels 12, thehandle members 34 resulting from the tearing of thebag 10 along theperforated lines 26 have opposite ends 36 that remain untorn and integral with theside panels 12 from which thehandle members 34 are formed. It is contemplated that a person may use thehandle members 34 to lift and carry thebag 10. It is further contemplated, and intended, that a person will use thehandle members 34 to securely close thebag 10 by tying thehandle members 34 in one of a variety of ways, as now described below. -
FIGS. 8 and 9 show an example of how thehandle members 34 may be tied to secure thebag 10 closed. InFIG. 8 , a person is grasping onehandle member 34 in each hand in preparation for tying thehandle members 34 together. InFIG. 9 , thehandle members 34 have been tied together to form a knot. - After the
bag 10 has been securely closed by tyinghandle members 34 together, a person may lift and carry thebag 10 by thehandle members 34. For instance, if thebag 10 is a garbage bag that has been filled with trash, a person may secure the garbage bag closed by tying thehandle members 34 together and then conveniently lift and carry the garbage bag to a proper disposal site. - The
handle members 34 may also be used to secure thebag 10 closed by collectively looping them around a neck of thebag 10 and then tying them off. More particularly, a person may hold the neck of thebag 10 in one hand and then use the other hand to wrap thehandle members 34 underneath and around the neck and then insert ends of thehandle members 34 through the loop created by the underneath-and-around wrapping, thereby forming a knot securing thebag 10 closed. As mentioned previously, thebag 10 may be secured closed with thehandle members 34 in a number of different ways. The disclosure contained herein of ways in which to secure thebag 10 closed are exemplary only and should not limit the scope of protection for thebag 10. - To further explain the utility of the
bag 10, an exemplary use of thebag 10 as a garbage bag will be described. Thebag 10, in its complete, untorn configuration may be placed in a garbage can, thereby forming a garbage can liner of sorts. Once the garbage bag is full, a person may remove the garbage bag from the garbage can, tear thebag 10 along theperforated lines 26 thereby forming thehandle members 34 as described above, and secure the garbage bag closed by tying thehandle members 34 as described above. Alternatively, once the garbage bag is full, a person may tear thebag 10 along theperforated lines 26, thereby forming thehandle members 34 as described above while the garbage bag is still in the garbage can; secure the bag closed by tying thehandle members 34 while the garbage bag is still in the garbage can; and then use the tiedhandle members 34 to lift the garbage bag out of the garbage can. After the garbage bag has been securely closed with thehandle members 34, it may be taken to a proper disposal site. - It will be appreciated that a plurality of bags each made in accordance with an embodiment of the invention may be supplied in a roll with successive bags being connected to one another by a perforated edge that enables the bags to be individually separated from one another as needed. In particular, the bags may be trash bags, which are supplied to consumers in rolls. It will be appreciated that there are numerous convenient, compact ways in which a plurality of bags may be supplied to consumers.

FIG. 10 illustrates aroll 102 of bags, wherein each bag of theroll 102 is represented by thebag 104 inFIG. 11 . Each bag of theroll 102 has been formed in accordance with another embodiment of the present invention. In particular, eachbag 104 includes a two-ply top portion 106, which two-ply top portion 106 preferably has been formed during manufacturing of thebag 104 in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention by folding anedge 108 of the bag 104 (which edge is indicated by a dashed and dotted line) downwardly against an inside or outside of thebag 104. Optionally, the layers of the two-ply top portion 106 may be secured together by any of various methods during manufacturing of thebag 104, such as by heating in specific spots or areas.Cross-hatching 109 is used in the drawings to indicate particular areas of a two-ply top portion the layers of which have been secured together. The area of the two-ply top portion 106 at which the two layers are sealed preferably includes areas at the ends of theperforated lines 110 in order to inhibit tearing of the bag beyond the ends of theperforated lines 110 when thehandles 114 are formed, as discussed in detail below. - The
bag 104 includes a firstperforated line 110 extending along a section of thetop portion 106 of thebag 104. Theperforated line 110 only extends partially about thetop portion 106 of thebag 104, and not all the way around thebag 104. In addition, a secondperforated line 110 is provided on a directly opposite side of thebag 104, as perhaps best seen inFIG. 12 (which drawing illustrates thebag 104 containing material and being held by a user). - Furthermore, each side of the
bag 104 includes anaperture 112, positioned proximate a midpoint of the perforated line of that side of thebag 104. Theaperture 112 preferably is sized to allow a user to insert a finger through theaperture 112 on one side of thebag 104 and out through the correspondingaperture 112 on the other side of thebag 104, as perhaps best seen again with reference toFIG. 12 . - After inserting a finger through the
apertures 112, a user simply pulls upwardly in the direction of arrow “A” inFIGS. 12 and 13 , thereby tearing thebag 104 along eachperforated line 110 as best seen inFIG. 13 . The tearing of the bag results inhandles 114 that may be used as tie members to seal thebag 104. - For example, with reference to
FIG. 14 , a method of using thehandles 114 to seal thebag 104 is for a user to hold thebag 104 in afirst hand 116, and to use the other hand (not shown) to wrap thehandles 114 underneath and around athumb 118 of thefirst hand 116, in a direction as illustrated by arrow “B” resulting in aloop 120 being formed in thebag 104 that is wrapped around thethumb 118 of thefirst hand 116, as perhaps best seen inFIG. 6 . Thereafter, the user can uses the second hand to pull thehandles 114 through theloop 120 to tie off and seal thebag 104 resulting in the closed and sealedbag 104 ofFIG. 16 havingknot 121. - Of course, another method of using the handles to seal the
bag 104 can be to simply tie thehandles 114 together, which method was described above with reference toFIGS. 8 and 9 . -

Unlike prior bags, however, thebag 194 does not include an aperture on either side of the bag, as shown inFIG. 32 . In use, the two-ply top portion of the bag is grasped and pulled upwardly to tear the bag along the perforated lines, thereby forming the handles for lifting and/or tying off of the bag. The other side of thebag 194 includes corresponding structure, with the perforated line on the other side of thebag 194 preferably aligning with the perforated line shown inFIG. 32 , just as in the previous describe bags herein. -
FIG. 33 illustrates aroll 202 of bags, wherein each bag of theroll 202 is represented by thebag 204 inFIG. 34 . Each bag of theroll 202 has been formed in accordance with another embodiment of the present invention. In particular, thebag 204 includes the two-ply top portion and perforated lines formed below the two-ply top portion rather than in the two-ply top portion. Furthermore, likebag 194, thebag 204 does not include an aperture on either side of the bag, as shown inFIG. 34 . In use, a top portion of the bag-which top portion includes and extends beyond the two-ply top portion and ends at the perforated lines—is grasped and pulled upwardly to tear the bag along the perforated lines, thereby forming the handles for lifting and/or tying off of the bag. The other side of thebag 194 includes corresponding structure, with the perforated line on the other side of thebag 194 preferably aligning with the perforated line shown inFIG. 34 , just as in the previous describe bags herein. - It will be appreciated that the foregoing description relates to bags with ties, and in particular, to a trash bag with an integral tie formed as part of the bag itself. As will be appreciated, however, various types of plastics or other materials may be used in accordance with the invention. Furthermore, the bags may be used as trash bags for waste or as bags used for other than waste.
- Still yet, it will be appreciated that recitation of a “perforated line” herein may refer to a linear line, curved line, or other line of perforations and is intended to mean that the perforations are generally aligned in sequential order for propagation of a single tear in the bag. The use of “line” thus does not require that the perforations be perfectly aligned in a straight line.
- Based on the foregoing description, it will be readily understood by those persons skilled in the art that the present invention is susceptible of broad utility and application. Many embodiments and adaptations of the present invention other than those specifically described herein, as well as many variations, modifications, and equivalent arrangements, will be apparent from or reasonably suggested by the present invention and the foregoing descriptions thereof, without departing from the substance or scope of the present invention.
- Accordingly, while the present invention has been described herein in detail in relation to one or more preferred embodiments, it is to be understood that this disclosure is only illustrative and exemplary of the present invention and is made merely for the purpose of providing a full and enabling disclosure of the invention. The foregoing disclosure is not intended to be construed to limit the present invention or otherwise exclude any such other embodiments, adaptations, variations, modifications or equivalent arrangements, the present invention being limited only by the claims appended hereto and the equivalents thereof.
