As illustrated, secured to the shaft 23 is a chain sprocket 38 connected by a usual endless chain connection 3l to a chain sprocket secured to the rear truck axle. The front and rear truck axles are connected together by a usual chain and sprocket connection 32. From the foregoing description it will be evident that when the jaw clutch 2l is shifted to connect the spur gear 2B to the shaft l5, and the pinion'21 is out of mesh with the gear 28, the truck wheels may be driven from the motor I0 at a relatively high speed through worm gearing I3, I4, friction clutch I6, shaft I5, spur gearing 25, 22 and the chain and sprocket connections 3i, 32. It will also be evident that when the jaw clutch 2'! is in its released position, that is, when the spur gear 2U is disconnected from the shaft l5 and the spur pinion 29 is in meshing engagement with the gear 28, the truck wheels may be driven atl a relatively slow speed appropriate for cutting through the reduction gearing 24, 25, 21, 28. Upon reversal of the motor I, the truck wheels may be driven to propel the apparatus in the reverse direction at either a relatively high or a relatively7 low speed.
Now referring to the supporting structure for the turntable 4 .and the devices for elevating and universally tilting the same, it will be noted that supported on the truck directly above the truck wheels is an annular or ring-shaped supporting frame 35 having attached thereto a plurality of, herein three, depending brackets 36, the lower ends of which are shaped to engage respectively with upstanding guide members 31 which are secured to the truck frame and which serve to prevent substantial lateral movement of the annular frame 35 and attached parts relative to the truck frame. Secured to the feet of these depending brackets 3S are screw nuts 38 (see Fig. 5)
which are threadedly engaged with vertical screws 3S. supported at their upper ends by the upstanding guide members 31 and at their lower ends in step bearings Mi formed in bearing brackets 4l attached to the bottom of the truck frame. It will'be noted that the screw nuts are so connected to the feet of the depending brackets 36 as to permit a slight relative rocking movement between the parts for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The three sets of screws and guide members constitute upright supports for the annular supporting frame 35, and the latter can be adjusted verticali;7 in parallelism or for universal tilting movement relative to the horizontal by suitable rotation of the screws 3S. Rotatably mounted upon each of the screws 39 at its lower end is aA chain sprocket 42 and these sprockets are driven by an endless chain 43. Idler sprockets 4t and 45 serve to guide the chain 43 relative toY the chain sprockets d2, the sprocket 45 being adjustable to vary the tension of the chain. As shown in Fig. 5, the chain sprockets 42 each have formed thereon clutch teeth G5 with which similar teeth on clutch members 41- splined to. the lower end of the screwsyare engageable. The screws extend downwardly through openings in the top plate d3 oi the truck frame. The clutch members 41 are each provided with a groove 43 in engagement with a shipper arm 5) attached to a vertical operating shaft 5l, The shafts 5| extend upwardly through the top plate 48 and they are each provided with a conveniently located handle 52 by which the movement of the clutch members 41 may be controlled. It will thus be seen that when all the clutches 41 are in a position to connect the chain sprockets to the screws the latter may be simultaneously rotated to effect movement of the annular frame 35 for supporting the turntable 4 together with the cutting mechanism supported thereby into different elevated positions relative to the truck frame. It will also be noted that by releasing certain of these clutches and connecting certain others, the screws may be operated to effect universal tilting movement of the turntable supporting frame relative to the horizontal to change the angle in altitude of the cutting mechanism. The mechanism for driving the screws 3S from the motor i5 herein comprises a bevel pinion 53 (see Fig. 9) journaled on the shaft I5 and connectible to the shaft by the jaw clutch member 2. This bevel pinion meshes with a bevel gear 54 iixed to a vertical shaft 55 while keyed to the lower end of this shaft is a chain sprocket 56 which engages and drives the endless chain 43. This particular turntable supporting and adjusting mechanism may obviously be modified or replaced by other designs, the design herein disclosed being one from the prior art.
The turntable 4 supported by the annular supporting frame 35 is, in the present instance, in the form of a circular casting which constitutes the main frame for supporting the cutting mechanism. This casting forms the turntable rotatable about the center of the annular frame 35 and is guided for rotative movement in the frame by a depending annular flange 51 iitting the interior periphery of the annular frame; and by a peripheral flange 58 overlying the tcp surface of the annular frame. If desired, suitable anti-friction rollers of any conventional design may be provided between the turntable 'l and the annular supporting frame 35 for reducing the friction between the parts. In the outer edge of the turntable casting is formed a series of notches 59, and cooperating with these notches is a slidable locking plate E!! mounted in a suitable guideway formed within a bracket Si attached to the annular supporting frame This locking member, when in its innermost position, is adapted to project within one of the notches 59 to lock the turntable 4 against rotation relative to the annular supporting frame 35. Motor operated devices are employed for rotating the turntable d relative to its annular supporting frame, and herein comprise a motor which may be of the reversible electric type, suspended beneath the turntable within the lateral limits of the supporting frame 35 and having its armature shaft 5S horizontally disposed and extended transversely across the turntable. Fixed to the armature shaft is a bevel pinion @l meshing with a bevel gear G8 xed to a vertical shaft (i9y as shown in Fig. 4. Fixed to the shaft B9 is a spur gear 1E! meshing at its opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 3, with spur gears 1i and l2. Rotatable with the spur gear 1i is a worm E3 meshing with a slow speed worm wheel 1li. This worm wheel is connectible by a usual multiple disc clutch 15, having any suitable type of operating means, to a transverse shaft 15,. Fixed to this shaft is a worm 11 meshing with a worm wheel 18 keyed to a vertical shaft 15. In its general arrangement this turntable rotating mechanism corresponds closely with a prior design. x 1
As previously mentioned, mounted on the turntable l` is a turntable 5 and this turntable comprises, in the particular form shown herein, a circular casting 9@ having a depending flange tting an annular member or ring Si secured as by screws EEZto the turntable 4. Attached to the turntable casting Sil is a thrust ring 93 underlying the ring 9| for maintaining the turntable 5 in position. 'The turntable casting 9i) is provided with a radial ange 5M overlying the ring 9| and rotatably mounted on a suitable .ring bearing 95.` For locking the turntable in its different adjusted positions about its axis relative to the turntablell, there is provided a plurality of recesses 96 formed in the flange Eid of the turntable casting, and cooperating with these recesses is a pivoted latch or dog Si supported by a bracket 98 attached to the turntable 4. Devices driven'by the motor iare employed for rotating the turntable 5 about its axis, and herein comprise a chain sprocket 99 rotatably supported on the lower end of the shaft.

Mounted for orbital movement on the margin of the cutter bar 'l is a usual cutter chain l Vl carrying usual cutter bits.
The mechanism for driving the cutter chain il] comprises a bevel gear H8 (see Fig. 4;) meshing with the gear 6l and fixed to a horizontal shaft l i9. Fixed to the opposite end of this shaft is a bevel gear H20 meshing with a bevel gear l2! fixed to a vertical shaft 22 having its axis coincident with the axis of the turntable 5. The shaft |122 drives a bevel gear 23 Which in turn meshes with and drives a bevel gear i211 fixed to a horizontal shaft U25 herein extending radially from the axial line or the turntable 5. Now referring to the mechanism for effecting swinging of the cutter bar 'l about its pivotal axis relative to the cutter head, it Will be noted that rotatable with the `gear i3@ (Fig. 6) isa bevel gear E36 constantly meshing with the reverselyA meshing with a Worm Wheel M55 fixed to a shaft M5 arranged parallel With the shaft lill. Fixed to the shaft M6 is' spur pinion lill meshing with the teeth of an internal gear l .18A herein formed integral with the cylindrical supporting frame H3 for thecutter bar l. The Worin |44 is connectible to the shaft |39 `by a sliding clutch element |49 and cooperating clutch elements carried by the worm and shaft respectively. The sliding clutch element |49 is provided with usual shipper mechanism l5@ operated by a handle |5|. It will thus be seen that depending upon which one of the` friction clutches IAQ, |4l, is applied the cutter bar may be swung about its pivot relative to the cutter head at a speed appropriate for cutting in either of opposite directions. The mechanism for rotating the clutter head 6 about its axis herein comprises a worm |52 connectible to the shaft |39 and meshing with a worm wheel |53 fixed to a longitudinally extending shaft |54 arranged parallel with the shaft |28. This shaft carries a pinion l55 meshing with the teeth of an internal gear |55 herein formed integral with the cylindrical bearing sleeve |99 on which the cutter head 5 is rotatably mounted. The worm |52 is connectible to the shaft |39 by a sliding clutch element l5? cooperating with clutch elements carried by the worm and shaft respectively. This sliding clutch element is provided with usual shipper mechanism |58 operated by a handle |59. It will, therefore, be evident that the cutter head l may be rotated about its in either of opposite directions under the control of the friction clutches |49, 4|. The worm gears |44, |45 and |52, |53 of the bar swinging and head rotating mechanisms are self-locking and upon release of the clutches |49, |51 maintain automatically the cutter bar and head in their respective positions of adjustment.
Electrical energy may be conducted to the electrical controlling apparatus for the motors IG and through a usual flexible conductor cable |60 wound upon a cable reel ll supported at the rear end of the truck as shown in Figs. l and 2. This cable reel is driven by the motor I0 through the following connections: As rnentioned above, journaled on the shaft l5 is a sleeve 29 integral with the spur gear il@ (see Fig. 9) and rotatable therewith at either a fast or a slow speed through the gear trains above referred to. Splined to this sleeve is -a suitable jaw clutch |62 having clutch teeth engageable with clutch teeth formed upon a driving pulley |63 journaled on the sleeve 29. This pulley |63 is connected by a belt |64 to a pulley |65 secured to the cable reel. It will be evident that as the truck wheels are driven to propel the apparatus in either direction along the mine track, the cable reel |6| may be also rotated to wind in or pay out the conductor cable in a manner well understood in the art.
The preferred mode of operation of the improved mining apparatus will now be described: The apparatus is propelled about the mine for wardly along the mine track at a relatively fast transport speed through the truck driving gearing I3, I4, 20, 22 driven by the motor IB. When the apparatus is traveling .about the mine, the turntables ll and 5, the cutter head 6 and the cutter bar 'l are disposed in their transport position as shown in Figs. l and 2. When the working face is reached the fast truck wheel drive is disconnected from the motor l0 by releasing the friction clutch l5 and the jaw clutch 2|. If it is desired to make a horizontal cut in the coal face in accordance with the arcwall method of cutting, the operator rst connects the clutch |49; and upon application of the friction clutch |40 the cutter bar is swung about its pivot relative to the cutter head from the central longitudinal position shown in Fig. 1 to a position where the tip end of the cutter vbar is disposed adjacent the coal face at the right hand rib of the entry, the clutch |40 thereafter being released. The self-locking worm gearing |44, |45 holds the cutter bar in this position. The clutch |33 is then shifted to a position to connect the shaft |3| to the driving gear |30 thereby connecting the cutter chain Ill in driving relation with the motor 65, and as a result the cutter chain is rapidly circulated about the margin of the cutter bar 1. The pinion 2l of the truck driving mechanism is then slid into meshing engagement with the gear 28 and, upon application of the friction clutch i6, the apparatus is propelled bodily along the mine track at a cutting speed thereby to effect sumping of the cutter bar within the coal, the clutch I6 thereafter being released. The brake |9 is then applied, holding the truck wheels against rotation thereby preventing movement of the apparatus relative to the mine track. The friction clutch I4 of the bar swinging mechanism is then applied and the cutter bar swung at a relatively slow cutting speed to effect its transverse swinging cut across the coal face, the clutch Uil and brake thereafter being released. When the tip end of the bar is positioned in the left hand rib of the entry and the swinging cut completed, the motor l0 is reversed and upon application of the friction clutch I6, the apparatus is propelled bodily rearwardly along the mine track at a slow cutting speed to effect withdrawal of the cutter bar from the coal thereby completing the kerf in the coal. After the horizontal cut has been completed the sliding gear 2l is shifted out of mesh with the gear 28 and the clutch 2| shifted to a position to connect the gear 2G to the shaft l5, and upon application of the friction clutch i6 the apparatus is propelled bodily rearwardly along the mine track at a relatively high transport speed to another working place. It will of course be understood that instead of swinging the cutter bar about its pivot relative to the cutter head 8 during the transverse swinging cut the bar may be swung with the turntable 4 about the turntable axis as a pivot under control of the friction clutch 83 and under certain conditions the bar may be swung about the axis of the turntable 5 under the control of clutch 83e.
If it is desired to insert horizontal kerfs in the coal face at different elevations this may be accomplished simply by shifting the clutch members 49 of the turntable elevating mechanism downwardly to connect the chain sprockets 42 to the adjusting screws 39 and sliding clutch 2| to connect the bevel 53 to the shaft l5. The motor I0 is then rotated in the proper direction and, upon application of the friction clutch i6, the turntable 4, together with cutting mechanism carried thereby, is adjusted vertically relative to the truck. If it is desired to tilt the turntable i relative to the horizontal to change the angle in al titude of the cutting mechanism, this may be accomplished by disconnecting certain of the adjusting screws from the motor while the others are rotated thereby. For instance, if it is desired to tilt the tip end of the cutter bar downwardly this may be accomplished by disconnecting the clutches for the front elevating screws 39 while the rear elevating screw is connected to the motor thereby causing the rear edge of the turntable to be tilted upwardly. Conversely, if it is desired to tilt the tip end of the cutter bar up wardly the rear elevating screw may be disconnected from the motor while the front elevating 'Y Y d ent mining conditions.

In a mining apparatus, a portable base, a horizontal support mounted on said base for rotation relative to said base upon a normally upright axis and for universal tilting movement relative to the horizontal, a second horizontal support swingably mounted on said first support of said base and including a pluralityk to' swing relative thereto, said second jsupport overlying said rst support and at its outer extremity overhanging said base, and a kerf cutter mountedon said outer overhanging extremity of said second support to swing in vertical planes rel-V to the horizontal, a second horizontal supportV swingably motuited on said iirst support to swing relative thereto', said second support `overlying said first support and at its outer extremity overhanging said base, a lierfcutter mounted on the outer overhanging extremity of said second support, and a motor mountedon one of said supports for rotating said i'lrst support and for swinging said second support. In a mining apparatus, a portable base, a support mounted on said base for rotation relative thereto about a vertical axis, a second support mounted on said first support for rotation relative thereto about a parallel axis lying within the outline of said iirst support, said second support overlying said rst support and overhanging said base, a kerf cutter mounted on the overhanging extremity of said second support for swinging movement relative thereto, and motor operated devices for independently rotating said supports about their respective axes.
85.*In a mining apparatus, a portable base, a support mounted on said base for rotation relativethereto about a vertical axis, a second support mounted on said iirst support for rotation relative thereto about a parallel axis lying within the outline of said first support, said second support overlying said first support and overhanging said base, a kerf cutter mounted on said second support for swinging movement relative thereto, and motor operated devices for independently rotating said supports about their respective axes and including a motor mounted on one of said supports.

In a mining apparatus, a portable base, a support mounted on said base for rotation relative thereto about a vertical axis, a second support mounted on said first support for rotation relative thereto about a parallel axis lying within the outline of said first support, said second support overlying said rst support and overhanging said base, a kerf cutter pivotally mounted on the outer overhanging extremity of said second support for swinging movement relative thereto about an axis located a substantial distance in advance of said base, and motor operated devices for independently rotating said supports about their respective axes and including a motor mounted on one of said supports.

In a mining apparatus, a portable base, a support mounted on said base for rotation relative thereto about a vertical axis, a second support mounted on said first support for rotation relative thereto about a parallel axis lying within the outline of said first support, said second support overlying said first support and overhanging said base, a kerf cutter mounted on said second support to swing in vertical planes, and motor operated devices for independently rotating said supports about their respective axes.
88. In a mining apparatus, a portable base, a
support mounted on said base for rotation relative thereto about a vertical axis, a second support mounted on said rst support for rotation relative thereto about a parallel axis lying within the outline of said iirst support, said second support overlying said rst support and overhanging said base, a kerf cutter mounted on said second support to swing in vertical planes, and
motor operated devices for independently rotat' ing said supports about their respective axes and including a motor mounted on one of said supports.

In a mining apparatus, a portable base, a turntable mounted for rotation on said base and for adjustment vertically relative thereto, an arm structure mounted on and overlying said turntable, said arm structure swingable relative to said turntable, and a rotatable cutter head mounted on the outer overhanging extremity of said arm structure and carrying a kerf cutter.

In a mining apparatus, a portable base, a rotatable turntable mounted on said base for universal tilting movement relative thereto, an arm structure mounted on and overlying said turntable, said arm structure swingable horizontally relative to said turntable, and a rotatabley cutter head mounted on the outer overhanging extremity of said arm structure and carrying a kerf cutter.

In a mining apparatus, a portable base, a support mounted on said base for tilting movement relative thereto about a horizontal axis, an arm structure pivotally mounted upon a substantially upright axis on the forward end of said support for swinging movement relative thereto, said arm structure being adjustable horizontally relative to said base, a cutter head rotatably mounted on the outer extremity of said arm structure, and a kerf cutter pivotally mounted on said cutter head.
