" In Germany May 15, 1931 s claims..V (o1.v 29e- 28) My invention-relates to the frames or autocars of the outer'wall IE of therloneitudinal eirder I. and has for its object to improve the connection while the inner Wall 210i, poet 2 eXtendS With an of theunderfrarne of the carvwith the posts of adequate inner curvature down to near the inner the carbody. f v edge of the top wall I1of the girder I. Both 5 It isalready known to interconnect the underthe outer and inner Walls 2 and 2 of the post 2 o frame of an autocar and the frame of the car terminate by'ilangeS 2 and 2d, respectively, by body in such-a manner-that a rigid structure is Which the post iS iXed to the girder l by bolting. formed, in order to obtain the smallest possible riveting, soldering, Welding or in any other suit- Weight and high strength, the girders vof the Aable manner. These flanges form together with m underframe and the posts of the ,car body havthe angeS 2e of the lateral WallS of poSt 2. See l0 ing a box-shaped cross section. Myi invention Figure 2, a continuous bearing and fastening Surhas reference to structures of this kind and has face round about the loWer end of post 2 on the for its object a connection of the box girders or upper and outer wall of the longitudinal girder l. bearers of the underframe and those forming the In the embodiment illustrated the longitudinal posts of the oar body, in which no Special oon.. grder I is composed of a section iron 3 of Z-shape 15 necting members such as gusset plates or corner and `a Channel iron 4, So that horizontally plates are required'and, nevertheless, the whole projecting flanges 5, 6 are formed on the inner combined frame structure is sufliciently rigid to upper edge and outer loWeI edge of the girder. take up the bending and torsional stresses the In this way I have suitable surfaces at disposal structure is exposed to. According to my invento Whioh the inner and outer Wall of the-posts 2 20 tion this object is achieved by the inner wall of can be fixed very ConVeriientlyevery post of the car body frame being fixed to What I Claim aS my invention isithe top wall ofthe respective longitudinal glrder 1. 5. In a vehicle body framework, a rail and a pillar both of box section, the lower end of said pillar having its center line disposed at an angle to the top and side faces of the rail and being notched out from its inner edge to its outer edge and a corner of said rail being received therein,
and means for securing said rail and pillar to gether, said securing means comprising an unbroken flange extending entirely about the lower end of said pillar.
6. In a vehicle body framework, a box sectioned rail having flanges at diagonally opposite corners thereof, a pillar of box section having a notch formed in the lower end thereof, an untlanged corner of said rail being received in said notch, and flanges on the lower end of said pillar se cured to the flanges aforesaid.
7. In a vehicle body framework, in combination, a box sectioned sheet metal pillar having a notch cut in the lower end thereof in such a manner as to leave a material vamount of the side walls of said pillar below the upper limit of said notch, nanges formed on the lower ends of the inner and outer walls of said pillar, and a sheet metal rail fitting into said notch in said pillar and having flanges complementary to said flanges on said pillar and secured thereto.
8. A vehicle body framework including a side rail and a door pillar, both of box section, said rail including a horizontally extending bottomy plate, a Z-sectioned member having the foot of the Z in contact with said plate, and a U-sec tioned member having a side thereof secured in contact with said plate with the bottom of the U in spaced relation to the leg of the Z and the remaining side of the U in contact with the head of the Z, a box sectioned pillar resting on said rail, a flange on the lower end of said pillar overlapping the head ,of said Z along the area where the latter contacts with said side of said U, means common to said flange, Z-sectioned member and said U-sectioned member securing them together, a second flange on said pillar overlapping the foot of said Z, and means common to said second flange, said Z-sectioned member and said plate member securing them together.
