  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
  • Detailed descriptions of the preferred embodiment are provided herein. It is to be understood, however, that the present invention may be embodied in various forms. Therefore, specific details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but rather as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to employ the present invention in virtually any appropriately detailed system, structure or manner.
  • As illustrated in FIG. 1, the present invention is directed towards an improved exercise device, generally indicated as 10. The exercise device comprises a substantially flat lower base portion, 11, which in the preferred embodiment is rectangular in shape, although it will be understood that the device would function equally as well in a square, trapezoidal, or similarly shaped base portion. As best shown in FIG. 2, the base 11 includes four resistance and stabilizing pads, generally parallel opposite edges 12 and 21, and a second pair of spaced, generally parallel opposite edges 22 and 23 which are perpendicular to the first pair 12 and 21. A first upstanding side wall, 12, is operable connected at its lower end to the base portion 11, preferably at one of the first pair of opposite and parallel edges, such as at 21. As illustrated in the drawings, the upper end of sidewall 12 has a substantially semicircular shaped configuration. Although not clearly shown in the drawings, a second upstanding side wall which is a mirror image to first side wall 21 is operable connected at its lower end to the base portion at the other of the first pair of opposite and parallel edges, such as at 12, and also has an upper end having a substantially semicircular shaped configuration. The device further includes an upper portion 13 which spans opposite edges of the base 11 in a covering relation and as best shown in FIG. 1, is sized and configured to form a co-planar surface between the sidewalls which is substantially semicircular in shape, corresponding sidewalls 12. More particularly, upper spanning portion 13 has a first pair of opposite edges 22, 23 which are operable connected to opposite edges 21 and 12, respectively, of the base portion 11. Upper spanning portion 13 also includes a second pair of opposite edges, 12 and 21, each of which is operable connected to one of the upstanding side walls 12 along its upper ends, as shown in FIG. 1. In the preferred embodiment, the overall size and dimension of device 10 allows it to be conveniently transported and stored in places such as under a bed or even in the overhead compartment on an airplane, train, etc.
  • In the most preferred embodiment, the exercise device 10 is a simple, integrally formed, one piece body. While the device 10 could be made of metal, wood, or any other suitably strong material, it is preferably made of a molded plastic like material. It is contemplated that when the body of device 10 is integrally formed of a suitable plastic material, it has the advantages of being substantially rigid, yet lightweight, and of being relatively inexpensive to manufacture. Additional advantages to forming the body of device from a suitable plastic material include providing a smooth surface for the user, which would be less likely to cause injury to the user and/or to tear or snag clothing. It will however, be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the base, sidewalls and upper portion of the device could be formed of another type of material such as wood or metal, and in such a case, sidewalls 12 could be connected to the base portion edges 12, 21 and the upper spanning portion 13 could be interconnected with the base 11 and sidewalls 12, 21 by other means such as adhesives, nails, staples, or other securing means known in the art which will nonetheless ensure that the device is sufficiently sturdy to support the body weight of an exerciser.
  • As has been described, the device 10 will support the exerciser's upper body weight when in use, as best shown in FIG. 1. Because the exerciser directly contacts the device 10 along the rigid surface of upper spanning portion 13, it is preferable to provide the device with a cushion 24 for comfort. As shown in FIG. 1A, the cushion is preferably sized and configured to cover the spanning upper portion 13. While the cushion 24 can be fixedly secured to the device 10 by way of adhesives.
  • In the preferred embodiment, the device 10 will also include at least one recessed handle 17 thereon, as shown in FIG. 1. In the most preferred embodiment where the device is integrally formed of a suitable plastic material, the handle will be integrally formed within the device 10, and positioned within upstanding side walls 12, 21. Alternatively, handle 17 may be operable connected to the device, and preferably will also be located on both of the upstanding side walls 12, 21. In such case, handle 17 may be comprised of a separate metal or wood handle attached to the device by conventional fasteners such as bolts, screws, etc. It will be readily appreciated that handle 17 provides means for easily transporting the device 10 from location to location, whether for traveling or for transporting the device from home to a gym, as is about to be described.
  • As shown in FIG. 1, the device 10 can be used directly on the ground or a floor surface. Further, the sit-up can be performed on device 10 with use of 19 as shown in FIG. 4, an adjustable strap preferably made from a nylon like material and circling device 10, providing a means to secure the exerciser's feet while performing setups. The design of the device 10, minimize pressure to his lower back. Exerciser can perform various exercises on the device and as many repetitions of each exercise as desired. The use of 18 as shown in FIG. 3, can be placed in either 16, or 26, with the exerciser standing on top of 13, to perform lifting and cardiovascular exercises. The use of 20, as shown in FIG. 5, with the exerciser either standing or sitting on 13 will give the exerciser a series of aerobic and Pilate's exercises.
  • The device gives variety to the exerciser desire of stretch and individual need. Laying down on your back the exerciser can adjust themselves for comfort of their arch in their back, and level of intensity, simply by sliding up or down on the device. The exerciser can incorporate the use of the device into the exercisers workout. The device is used for stretching, toning and building to maximize an exerciser's work out routine, building a strong body, enhance balance, body alignment, flexibility and maximize exerciser's muscles. The device prepares and trains the core, (human body mid section), and the whole body to get stronger and hold up the body. The Curve prepares the body to receive results. The exercises are described in a copyrighted 90 page manual entitled “Aerobic Curve” by Dahlene and Ross Rester 2005.
  • While the invention has been described in connection with a preferred embodiment, it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention to the particular form set forth, but on the contrary, it is intended to cover such alternatives, modifications, and equivalents as may be included within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
