Description
J. M. DE anus. Firemans Hat.
Patented Feb. 2
INVENTOR APHER, WASNNGTON, D
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSE MIGUEL DE OELIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FlREM ENs HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,701, dated February 26, 1878; application filed January 7, 187 8.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osr. MIGUEL DE Grams, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Firem ans Hat, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in vertical section, of my improved firemans hat; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through the brim and body, on enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish to firemen, policemen, and others an improved hat, by which the force of falling bodies or of blowsmay be broken sufficiently to protect the heads against injury; and the invention consists of a hat-body, being made detachable from the brim, guided along a raised portion of the rim, and cushioned by suitable springs.
In the drawing, A represents the body of a hat for firemen, policemen, or other occupations in which protection for the head is required. B is the brim, that is made separate from the hat-body, and provided with a raised portion, 0, that is fitted to the head, and arranged to carry the body A. The hat-bodyA is made to slide on the rim portion 0, guided by slots and pins (1 b, or by other equivalent means, and supported on acushioning springband, D, of rubber, interposed between the lower edge of the body A and the brim B, as shown in Fig. 1.
In place of the rubber band a number of spiral or other springs may be used, as shown in Fig. 2, as may be found most convenient, the essential feature being to impart to the hat-body a certain flexibility or play, and cushion the same in suitable manner, so as to enable it to resist, to a certain extent, the blows of falling objects, &c., and form thereby a better protector for the head than the common hats in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A firemans hat made of a brim with inner raised portion, and of a yielding and springcushioned body guided thereon, substantially as specified.
JOSE MIGUEL DE CELIS. Witnesses:
PAUL GoEPEL, O. SEnGwIoK.
