LAST
Filed Jan. 20, 1933 I III! Tuenior I44? I QQ K/AM A Patented June 18, 1935 My present invention form of last for use LAST Henry L. Moorhouse, Brockton, Mass, assignor to Brockton Last Company, Brockton, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts ApplicationJanuary 20, 1933, Serial No. 652,629 "1 Claim. (01. 12-133) is .a novel and improved in the manufacture of boots and shoes, preferably inaccordance with the method as explained and claimed in my co- 5 pending application, Ser. No. 64 i,210, filed November 25, 1932, on Method of shoes, shoe pattern therefor,
thereby.
making boots and and boot made My present form of last is capable and suitable for. embodiment either in a b1OCk or solid last, hinged last of any desired type, other two-part or three-part divisible last construction, the main and principal elements of importance and novelty. consisting in the, de-
sign of same, particularly and contour of the the position, location, coneportion of the forepart.
Heretofore in last constructions it has been customary to design lasts for various purposes v by constructing the longitudinal lines of the last with relation to the center line from the ex-, treme heel to the extreme toe portions. Various methods of designing a last with relation to such a center line have been attempted, particularly in drafting lasts for special orthopedic shoes.
In my'present invention, however, I have disregarded such a longitudinal alignment in the last designs and, on the contrary, have discovered that a last, and consequently the shoe made thereon, which is entirely usual longitudinal is much more closely normal foot than that of any prior In carrying out disaligned from the axis or center of vthe last fitting to the natural and structure.
therefore, I
my invention,
have so drawn, designed, and constructed my present improved shoe last as to direct the contour of the forepart from the top wardly to the ball of the foot at wardly toward the arch on a right last, and to This novel feature allows a or cone downa direction inportion, viz., to the left the right on a left last. more nearly vertical or perpendicular face or surface to the last and,
hence tothe shoe made the arch portion closer fitting of the resultant shoe upper, both thereon, directly above and greatly facilitates the from the arch side, drawing up the leather snugly to the last and, hence, to the as to the opposite rials are so cut and foot as well side where the upper matethe central front portion of the foot, all as explained in my said rected to claim the improved copending application dimethod, shoe pattern made therefor, and the shoe structure made thereby.
Referring to the ferred embodiment shoe;
drawing, illustrating a preof my invention,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of thelast for a right cal ridge of the last tially symmetrical with part having the extreme formed as to draw across the toe portion forwardly of the tion being in Fig. 2 being a vertical plan view;
3--3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
As shownin the drawing, wherein a typical form of hinge last is illustrated, l is the foresize or style, the last hereillustrated being a typical standard form fora mans shoe.
instead of as usual in alignment to the toe portion, is formed at a pronounced angle'to the left, as shown shoe, and correspondingly to the right in a'left shoe, the arch of the cone or contour extending approximately as shown from the point 3=to a suitable point 5 in the forepart, where the conimerges into the forepart, This construction, with v the resultant lacing opening in the shoe, made contour from 3 to 5 cal portion 6 along the side, of the arch to the cone from 3 to 5 and a consequently much larger proportion for the outer surface, as indicated at ID, from the outer edge of the soleof the resultant shoe to the approximate position of the lacing opening in the shoe, also as more fully explained in my said copending application- I believe that my novel and improved last, as thus described, with the contour of the forward cone portion from theposition substantially as shown at 3 to approximately the point 5, viz. from top to forepart with the same dis-v aligned and at the extreme side of the center line of the last substantially as shown, is a distinct novelty in the art of in the consequent art of shoe manufacture, and I wish to claim this feature broadly.
I claim: I Y
