This invention relates to improvements in type writing machines and has particular reference to an improved typewriter action mechanism; that is to say, the mechanism whereby the depression of the key buttons is transmitted to the corresponding type bars to effect printing operation thereof. a
The primary object of the invention is to provide a typewriter action mechanism which shall be substantially noiseless, easy, and rapid in operation, the construction being relatively simple and inexpensive to build and advantageous in other respects.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from a. consideration of the detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, appearing hereinafter, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which:

tain features of the invention hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate a suitable typewriter frame II in which a shiftable carriage support I2 is suitably supported by means of a pivot or rock shaft l3 which 5 may be adjustably mounted as hereinafter mentioned. The carriage support preferably comprises a depending arm l2 through which a suitable operative connection may be made to the usual shift keys for actuating the carriage support between its lower case and upper case positions. A platencarriage I4 is suitably mounted on the carriage support l2 by means of antifriction balls l5 disposed between cooperating raceways provided on the carriage support and platen 15 carriage, to accommodate movement transversely of the machine, as is well known in the art. The platen carriage I4 carries a platen I6 which is rotatably mounted therein in the usual manner and which is shiftable between the position 20 indicated in full lines and the position indicated by the dotted lines l6 to accommodate lower case and upper case printing, respectively. It will be understood that the platen is actuated between these two positions by moving the carriage support l2 about its pivotal mounting l3 as a result of the usual shift key operation.
A plurality of key levers I1 are pivotally mounted on a pivot wire or rod l8 which is suitably secured in the machine frame near the rear portion thereof, and each of these key levers is provided with the usual key button is disposed in the desired keyboard arrangement. A portion I'I' of each of the key levers extends rearwardly from the pivotal support 18 and hasattached thereto at its rear extremity one end of a tension spring 20, the other end of which is suitably connected to an angle member 2| secured to the bottom plate of themachine frame. The springs 20 thus serve to maintain the corresponding key levers in their positions of rest and to return them to such positions after each depression thereof.
For each of the key levers there is provided a corresponding type bar 22 which is pivotally mounted upon a pivot wire 23 carried in a transverse slot or groove in a type bar segment member 24 which is suitably secured in the machine frame, as by means of screws 25 securing the segment member to the side walls of the frame H. The segment member 24 is provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots 24 to receive the pivoted ends of the individual type bars 22 and to provide guides for a geared connection tween each of the type bars and a corresponding intermediate member 26 for actuating the same.
The members 26 are pivoted upon a pivot wire 21 carried in a transverse slot or groove in a segment member 28 which is secured between the side walls of the machinefframe in a manner similar to that in which the segment member 24 is mounted. The two segment members 24 and 28 are similarly inclined, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and the segment member 28 is provided with a transverse slot 28* for each of the intermediate members 28, these slots being in alignment with the corresponding slots 24 in the segment member 24, so that all of the members 28 lie fiat and are of the same length, with their pivoted ends lying in the slots 28 in the segment member 28 and their opposite ends in the slot 24 in the segment member 24. Each of the intermediate actuating members 28 comprises a portion 26 projecting downwardly and forwardly from a point near the pivoted forward extremity of said member. Each of these projecting portions 26 isprovided with a hole to receive a pin 29 carried at the upper extremity of the upwardly extending arm 39* of a bell crank member 30. The-segment member 28 is provided at its bottom portion with a plurality of slots 28 to'receive individually the elbow portions of the bell crank members 30, which are pivotally mounted upon a pivot wire 3| carried in a slot or groove in the member 23 extending transversely of the slots 28*.
The second arm 30* of each of the bell crank members 30 extends rearwardly from the pivot wire 3! and is pivotally connected at its rear extremity with the upper end of a link 32, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to the corresponding key lever H at an intermediate point thereon. It will be understood that the bell crank members 39 will be of varying shapes and sizes for the different key levers and intermediate members, so that the proper operative connection is made between each of the key levers and the corresponding intermediate member.
The several key levers l! are preferably maintained in alignment and in their proper relative positions by means of a comb member 33 which is slotted as indicated at 33" to receive the in? dividual key levers. This comb member may be suitably mounted upon the front face of the segment member 28 by means of screws, one of which is indicated by the reference character 24.
Each type bar 22 carries a type head 35, which, in turn, carries a lower case type 3' and an upper case type 31. The types 36 and 31 are respectively adapted to move into printing relation to the platen l8, upon depression 01' the corresponding key button IB, when. the platen is in its lower case and upper case positions I and I6, respectively. A type bar guide 38 is carried by a member 39 which may be suitably secured to the segment member 24 so'that it extends upwardly therefrom to support the guide 38 adjacent the printing point on the platen. This guide operates in the usual manner to receive the extremity of each of the: type bars 22 as the same is actuated to printing position and to guide the corresponding type head into the exact position required for printing at the proper point on the work carried by the "platen.
For the purpose of securing the desired substantially noiseless operation of the action mechanism, each type bar 22 has pivotally connected thereto, near the outer extremity which carries the corresponding type head 35, one end of a toggle link 40, the other end of which is pivotally connected to a second toggle link ll. The opposite extremity of this latter toggle link is formed with a curved portion M extending around the pivot of the corresponding intermediate member 26 and then doubled over and pivotally connected by means of a pin 42 to a portion 28 of said corresponding intermediate member 26 which extends forwardly from the pivot thereof.
' Each of the forward extensions 26 of the intermediate members 26 is bent at substantially right angles to the plane of the member to form a portion 28 lying in a transverse plane amacent the curved edge of the forward portion M"- of the corresponding toggle link iii. This portion 26 extends upwardly above the upper edge of the portion 26 from which it is bent, and its upper extremity is bent forwardly at substantially right angles to provide a portion 26 to which the upper extremity of a tension spring 63 is attached. The lower extremity of the spring 53 is connected to a forwardly extending projection H of the forward extremity of the toggle link I.
Figs. 4 and 5 show the segment members 28 and 24, respectively, in somewhat greater detail than Figs. 1 and 2 and illustrate the fact that the slots 28 in the segment member 28 for receiving the pivoted ends of the intermediate members 26 and the slots 24* in the segment member 2 5 for receiving the pivoted ends of the type bars 22 are progressively spaced further apart from the middle of the respective segments toward the ends thereof. This arrangement accommodates the greater spacing of the type bars toward the ends of the segments which is required by reason of the fact that the type heads on the bars nearer the ends of the segments must be set at a greater angle with respect to the type bars which carry them than those nearer the middle of the segment.
The operation of the mechanism herein disclosed as a preferred embodiment of the invention is accomplished by depressing the key buttons I! in the conventional manner, these buttons and the portions of the corresponding key levers I! in front of the pivot 48 being biased upwardly at all times by the tension springs 20. With this fact in mind, the operation will be best understood by reference to Figs. 6, '7, and 8, in which one of the key levers I! is shown only in part, this part being a portion of the key lever located between the pivot II and the 01- ward extremity of the key lever and including the part to which the link 32 of the action mechanism is pivotally connected.
When the parts of the mechanism are in their respective positions of rest, as illustrated in Fig. 6, the key lever I l is in its uppermost position and the type bar 22 is in its foremost and lowermost position, with the toggle links 40 and M folded up between the bottom of the type bar and the top of the intermediate member 2'. Upon depression of the proper key button, the key lever I 7 is moved downwardly and pulls with it, by means of the link 32, the forwardly extending arm 30 of the bell crank 30 which moves pivotally about the pivot 3|. This movement results in the upwardly extending arm 30* of the bell crank ,3! being moved to the right, or rearwardly of the machine, the pin 2! which is carried by said arm llbelng similarly moved and carrying with it the downwardly extending arm 2| of the intermediate member 26. This intermediate member pivots about its support 21 so that its links with the outer extremity of the link 40 pivoted to the type bar 22 and the free extremity of the link 4! pivoted to the forward extension 26 of the. intermediate member 26, these links 40 and 4| do not change greatly in their positions relative to the type bar 22 and intermediate member 26, respectively, during a major portion of the movement of the type bar and intermediate member; that is to say, from the positions of rest illustrated in Fig. 6 to the intermediate position shown in Fig. 7, in which latter position the type bar has moved through possibly two-thirds of its total path of travel. Since there is a comparatively slight relative movement between the toggle link M and the intermediate member 26 up to this point, the tension spring Q3 is extended from its original position only a comparatively slight amount and therefore remains under a tension which is increased only slightly over its original tension.
As the type bar moves from an intermediate position such as that illustrated in Fig. 7 to its printing position as shown-in Fig. 8, the toggle links 46 and iii are fully extended by a relatively rapid movement, and during this operation the spring 63 is fully extended and checks the tendency of the middle pivot of the toggle to move past the dead center position. Such action is definitely prevented by contact between the curved edge of the forward portion li of the toggle link ii and the rear surface of the transversely bent portion 26 of the forward extremity of the intermediate member 26. This curved edge constitutes a heel portion which moves into contact with the portion 26 by substantially a rolling action, which is, therefore, quite noiseless, especially since the impact is checked by the increased tension of the spring Q3.
When the toggle links lii and iii are fully extended, as shown in Fig. 8, the type bar has moved to its printing position and is unable to move beyond this point because any further extension of the toggle links is impossible. In this position the toggle links, type bar, and intermediate member form substantially a triangle which is extremely rigid and very definitely determines the extent of travel of the type bar, so that there is no actual impact between the type and the platen through the work sheet carried by the latter. The prevention of such impact eliminates substantially all of the noise which ordinarily results from the operation of a machine not embodying a noiseless action. It will be understood, of course, that suitable means may be provided for adjusting the position of the platen relative to the fully extended or printing position of the type heads, to accommodate different numbers of carbon copies, thickness of paper etc., as is well known in the art of noiseless typewriters.
Upon release of the key button after a printing stroke, the corresponding spring 26 returns its key lever to its original position, and the return of the other parts of the action mechanism is facilitated by the spring 43, which immediately begins to assist in pulling the toggle links toward their folded positions, thus accelerating the return action. This return action is substantially silenced by the provision of a sound-deadening rest of any suitable character for the type heads, such as that indicated in part at 44 in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be understood that this rest is so shaped and mounted that all of the type heads will rest thereon when they are in their normal positions of rest. I Fig. 9 shows the essential parts of the action mechanism in enlarged proportions to illustrate in greater detail the operative connection between the intermediate actuating member 26 and the type bar 22, which, as previously noted, preferably comprises a geared connection. It will be noted that the gear teeth 22 at the upper extremity of the geared portion of the type bar 22 are located at a greater distance from the pivot 23 of the 'type bar than are the lower teeth indicated at 22 and that the radius of the pitch circle of the teeth on the type bar progressively decreases from the former extremity to the latter. The pitch circle of the teeth formed on the intermediate member 26 progressively increases in a like degree between the extremities 26 and 26. This arrangement provides an increasing ratio of the gear element on the intermediate member 26 to that on the type bar 22 as the printing stroke progresses, so that the desired acceleration of the type bars is obtained. Thus the type heads are advanced with greater force toward the end of their strokes but aremore gradually brought to rest at the printing point by the relatively rapid extension of the toggle links during the latter part of the stroke and the simultaneous extension of the spring 43. Thus the actual printing operation is accomplished with considerable force but with relatively little actual impact, so that substantially all of "the noise usually incident to such operation is eliminated.
The spring 43 is under some tension even when the parts of the mechanism are in their positions of rest and thus serves to take up all lost motion between the type bar 22, intermediate member 26, and toggle links 66 and M. This action further contributes to the elimination of noise, particularly between the gear elements of the type bar 22 and intermediate member 26. These gear elements are shown in exaggerated proportions in Fig. 9 to illustrate the slight clearance which must always exist between the cooperating gear teeth to permit free operation and which will also increase slightly due to wear as the machine is used.
Due to the action of the spring Q3, this clearance will always be between the tops of the teeth on the type bar 22 and the bottoms of the teeth on the intermediate member 2%, as indicated by the letter C, throughout both the printing and the return strokes of the mechanism. All noise dueto .back-lash between the gear elements during the printing and return strokes of the mechanism is thus eliminated. The same istrue with respect to any looseness in the pivotal connections of the toggle links, since the spring 43 maintains these links and the type bar 22 and intermediate member 26 under continuous tension relative to one another throughout the printing and return strokes.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the present invention provides an improved typewriter will be readily understood by those skilled in the art that various changes and'modiflcations in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new and is desired to secure by Letters Patent, therefore, is:
1. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a type bar, an actuating member having a fixed pivot, a direct operative connection between said actuating member and type bar, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other ofsaid links being pivotally connected at one of its ends to said one of said links and at its other end to said actuating member at a point removed from the fixed pivot of the latter and from the direct connection between the latter and the type bar, said actuating member serving independently of said toggle links to actuate said type bar.
2. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, an actuating member having a fixed pivot, a direct operative connection between said actuating member and type bar, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected at one of its ends to said one of said links and at its other end to said actuating member at a point removed from the fixed pivot of the latter and from the direct connection between the latter and the type bar, said actuating member serving independently of said toggle links to actuate said type bar.
3. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a type bar, an actuating member having a fixed pivot, an operative connection between said actuating member and type bar, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar,
one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected at one of its ends to said one of said links and at its other end to said actuating member at a point on the opposite side of the pivot 01 the latter from the connection between said actuating member and the type bar,
said actuating member serving independently of said toggle links to actuate said type bar.
4. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bat, an actuating member having a fixed pivot, an operative connection between said actuating member and type bar, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected at one of its ends to said one of said links and at its other end to said actuating member at a point on the opposite side of the pivot of the latter from the connection between said actuating member and the type bar, said actuating member serving independently oi! said toggle links to actuate said type bar.
5. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a type bar, a member for actuating said type bar, a. toothed operative connection between said actuating member and said type bar, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement 01' said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member.
6. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, a member for actuating said type bar. a toothed operative connection between said actuating member and said type bar, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said-type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member.
7. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a type bar, a pivoted member for actuating said type bar, a toothed operative connection between said actuating member and said type bar, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member.

10. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, a member for actuating said type bar, said actuating member and said type bar being formed-and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one 01 said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member.
11. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a type bar, a pivoted member for actuating said type bar, said actuating member and said type bar being formed and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said .type bar, and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member.
12. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, a pivoted member for actuating said type bar, said actuating member and said type bar being formed and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to'said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member.
13. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, an actuating member connected therewith and pivoted forwardly of the type bar pivot, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, said links being directly and pivotally connected to each other, one of said links being pivotally conmounting of the latter from the connection between said actuating member and said type bar.
14. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, an actuating member connected therewith and pivoted forwardly oi. the type bar pivot, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, said links being directly and pivotally connected to each other, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member on the opposite side of the pivotal mounting of the latter from the connection between said actuating member and said type bar, and resilient means coacting between said actuating member and said other of said links.
15. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, an actuating member therefor pivoted forwardly of the type bar pivot, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement oi! said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member forwardly of the pivotal mounting of the latter, said actuating member and said other of said links being extended forwardly from the pivotal connection therebetween, and resilient means coacting between said extensions.
16. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, an actuating member therefor pivoted forwardly of the type bar pivot, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar andthe other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member forwardly of the pivotal mounting of the latter, said actuating member and said other of said links being extended forwardly from the pivotal connection therebetween, and a tension spring coactingbetween said extensions to maintain said type bar, actuating member and toggle links under continuous tension relative to one another.
17. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, an actuating member having a fixed pivot and directly connected to said type bar, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, said links be ing directly and pivotally connected to each other, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating memher, and resilient means for maintaining said type bar, actuating member and links under continuous tension relative to one another.

A typewriter action mechanism compris-= ing a pivoted type bar, a pivoted member for actuating said type bar, a toothed operative connection between said actuating member and said type bar, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to. said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member, and resilient means for maintaining said type bar, actuating member and links under continuous tension relative to one another.
19. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, a pivoted member for actuating said type bar, said actuating member and said type bar being formed and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, a pair of toggle links for limiting .the movement of said type bar, one or said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said-links being pivotally connected to said actuating member, and resilient means for maintaining said type bar, actuating member and links under continuous tension relative to one another.
20. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, an actuating member having a fixed pivot and directly connected to said type bar, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member, and spring means coacting between said actuating member and said other of said links to maintain said type bar, actuating member and links under continuous tension relative to one another.
21. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, a pivoted member for actuating said type bar, a toothed operative connection between said actuating member and said type bar, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member, and spring means coacting between said actuating member and said other of said links to maintain said type bar, actuating member and links under continuous tension relative to one another.
22. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a pivoted type bar, a pivoted member for actuating said type bar, said actuating member and said type bar being formed and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said actuating member, and spring means coacting between said actuating member and said other of said links to maintain said type bar, actuating member and links under continuous tension relative to one another.
23, A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member extending substantially horizontally fore and aft of the machine, a fixed pivotal support for the forward end of. said intermediate member, a direct, contactive operative connection between the rear end of said intermediate .member and said type bar, a pivotally mounted bell crank located below said intermediate member and having its arms respectively extending upwardly and rearwardly from the pivotal axis thereof, a direct pivotal connection between said upwardly extending arm and said intermediate member, and
.a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member in operative engagement with said type bar, a link having one end connected to said key lever, a bell crank having one of its arms connected to the other end of said link and its other arm connected to said intermediate member, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said toggle links being pivotally connected to said type bar and other other to said intermediate member.
25. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member having a toothed operative'connection with said type bar, a fixed pivotal support for said intermediate member, a link having one end connected to said key lever, and a bell crank having one of its arms connected to the other end of said link and its other arm directly and pivotally connected to said intermediate member.
26. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member having a toothed operative connection with said type bar, a fixed pivotal support for said intermediate member, a link having one end connected to said key lever, a bell crank having one of its arms connected to the other end of said link and its other arm directly and pivotally connected to said intermediate member, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar.
27. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member having a toothed operative conmtion with said type bar, a link having one end connected to said key lever, a bell crank having one of its arms connected to the other end of said link and its other arm connected to said intermediate member, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said toggle links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other to said intermediate member.
28. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member, a fixed pivotal support for said intermediate member, said type bar and said intermediate member being formed and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, a link having one end connected to said key lever, and a-bell crank having one of its arms connectedto the other end of said link and its other arm directly and pivotally connected to said intermediate member.
29. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member, a fixed pivotal support for said intermediate member, said type bar and said intermediate member-being formed and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, a link having one end connected to said-key lever, a bell crank having one of its arms-connected to the other end or said link and its other arm directly and pivotally connected to said intermediate member, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar.
30. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member, said type bar and said intermediate member being formed and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, a link having one end connected to said key lever, a bell crank having one of its arms connected to the other end of said link and its other arm connected to said intermediate member, and a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement 01' said type bar, one of said ttggle links beingpivotally connected to said type bar and the other to said intermediate member.

A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member in operative engagement with said type bar, a link having one end connected to said key lever, a bell crank having one of its arms connected to the other end 01' said link and its other arm connected to said intermediate member, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said toggle links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other to said and toggle links under continuous tension relative to one another. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member, said type bar and said intermediate member being formed and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, a link having one. end connected to said key lever, a bell crank having one of its arms connected to the other end of said link and its other arm connected to said intermediate member, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of said type bar, one of said toggle links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other to said intermediate member, and resilient means for maintaining said type bar, intermediate member and toggle links under continuous tension relative to one another.
34. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member in operative engagement with said type bar, a link having one end connected to said key lever,

A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member, said type bar and said intermediate member being formed and disposed with intermeshing gear teeth to provide an operative connection therebetween, a link having one end connected to said key lever, a bell crank having one of its arms connected to the other end oi." said link and its other arm connected to said intermediate mem-' ber, a .pair of toggle links for limiting the movement o1' said type bar, one of said toggle links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other to said intermediate member, and
spring means coacting between said intermediate member and said other of said toggle links to take up all lost motion between said parts.

A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate memher having a fixed pivot and a direct connection with said type bar for actuating the latter, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of the type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said intermediate member so that said links are substantially fully extended when said type bar is in printing position, and means for preventing the middle pivot of said toggle links from moving beyond the line connecting the end pivots of said links.

A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate member for actuating said type bar, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of the type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected'to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said intermediate member so that said links are substantially fully extended when said type bar is in printing position, and means for preventing the middle pivot of said toggle links from moving beyond the line connecting the end pivots of said links, said means comprising portions of said intermediate member and said other of said links arranged to come gradually into engagement as the parts of the mechanism move from their positions of rest into printing position.
39, A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an intermediate memher for actuating said type bar, a pair of toggle links for limiting the movement of the type bar, one of said links being pivotally connected to said type bar and the other of said links being pivotally connected to said intermediate member so that said links are substantially fully extended when said type bar is in printing position, and means for preventing the middle pivot of said toggle links from moving beyond the line connecting the end pivots of said links, said means comprising a projecting portion of said intermediate member adjacent the end pivot of said other of said links and a portion of said link extending substantially transversely of its length and constituting a curved heel portion arranged to come into abutting engagement with said projecting portion of said intermediate member by substantially a rolling action as the parts of the mechanism are actuated into printment of the latter, and resilient means coacting between said actuating member and one of said links.
41. A typewriter action mechanism comprising a key lever, a type bar, an actuating member coacting therebetween and having a fixed pivot and a direct connection with said type bar, a pair of toggle links connected between the actuating member and the type bar for limiting themovement of the latter, and a tension spring coacting between said actuating member and one of said links to maintain said type bar, actuating member and toggle links under continuous tension relative to one another.
