Description

No.' 200,426. Patented Feb. 19 y ATTORNEYS. v
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE. i
EDWIN B. BEER, 0F SUSSEX, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA.
IM PROVEM ENT IN TARGETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,426, dated February 19, 187,8 application filed October 30, 1877.
Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and v Improved Target, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a vertical transverse section of m'y improved target and protecting-butt or shield. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same on line x,`Fig. l, showing target and signaling device in elevation; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the target-supporting frame.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in attaching a target rigidly to a lever, which is pivoted to a iixed frame in such manner that it may be operated to swing the target out of its normal position, to enable it to be conveniently patched.
The invention further consists in constructing the target-supportin g frame and lever arms or standards of beveled or tapering pieces, so
. that they may offer to the balls as small area of surface as possible.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the butt or shield, which may be either combined with a pit, in case the target is raised above or lowered below the butt, or the butt or shield may be arranged on level ground, and the target worked, then, sidewise of the same.
At the interior of the pit or baclgof the butt is arranged a seat for the marker, and conveniently thereto the target B and signalingdisks C.
The target B is mounted on a metal frame, D, of round or square shape, which is made of pieces that are tapered or beveled toward the front, to offer as small a surface Aas possible to the balls, and cause them to drop dead to thev ground when striking the same.`
The target-frame D has plug-holes at the rear for driving in wooden plugs, to which the canvas or other target is attached. The target-frame D is attached to standards or arms D1, connected rigidly to an operating -lever handle, D2, which is pivoted to a fixed` frame or other suitable support, E, so as to be readily raised into position above the level of the butt or sidewiseof the same.
When the target is to be raised and lowered above or below the butt, a balancing-weight, F, is attached, by a cord or chain, to the supporting-arms, the pivoted end oi the leverhandle being in that case made in the shape of a pulley, for guiding the rod or chain.'
When the target is to be thrown out siden wise of the butt, no balance-weight is required.
The signaling devices C are arranged at the side wall of the butt or shield, and raised to indicate the value of the shot after the target is drawn in and the shot-hole ascertained. The
target is then spotted or patched, and raised again for the next shot, and so on, forming a conveniently operated target, which is attended without danger, as the butt protects the marker during his work.
The signaling-disks are supported in raised position in suitable manner, and dropped when the target is thrown out again.
A new target may be readily attached to the supporting-frame, whenever required, by withdrawing the pivot and inserting another supporting-frame with a new target mounted thereon. The spots and patches preserve the record in the customary manner.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination with the target and the Xed frame E, the lever D2, pivoted to the latter, and rigidly connected with the former, so that the target may be swung out of its normal position when required, as and for the purpose specified.
2. As an improvement in targets, the tar-
