Description

C. GIMBEL BOX covmx ATTACHING CLIP Filed Feb. 1, 1932 \NVENTOR @mewp 6651 9" WW ATTORNEY Patented June 4, 1935 unrrso STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to cover holding clips for egg cases, or the like, and has for its principal object to provide holding devices in the form of spring metal clips whereby the cover of an egg case, or the like, may be securely held in position on the case during transportation, and which clips later may easily and readily be removed to release the cover.
Furthermore, the invention resides in the provision of a clip of the above character that will not cause any damage to the cover or case by its removal which would interfere with these parts again being used.
More specifically stated, the invention resides in the provision of a clip that is formed from a strip of spring metal, bent in such manner as to fit about the corner edge of the top and end of a case, or box, and which has a hook at one end to engage in holding contact beneath the end cleat of the usual form of case, and with a lateral extension at its opposite end arranged to engage in holding contact with the top or cover portion and to be held securely by teeth projectedfrom this piece.
Other objects of the invention reside in the details of construction and in the use of the clip, as will hereinafter be more fully described.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided the improved details of construction the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherem Fig. i is a perspective view of one end portion of an ordinary type of egg case, to which cover holding clips, embodied by the present invention, have been applied to secure the cover in place.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of an egg case, showing a clip, of the present character, applied thereto.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the preferred form of cover attaching clip.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an alternative form of clip.
Referring more in detail to the drawing- I designates what may be an ordinary type of egg case having an end wall I a to which a cross cleat 2 is fastened flush with the top edge. The case cover is designated in its entirety by reference numeral 3 and it is arranged to fit flatly against the top edges of the case and flush therewith and to be held in place by clips 4 embodying the present invention.
The present clip consists of a flat strip of spring metal, having a substantially straight body portion to which is of a length equal to the width of the cleat 2 plus the thickness of the cover 3, and
at its lower end this body portion has a leg portion ib turned laterally at a right angle, and this leg is provided at its end with an upturned flange 5.
At the upper end of the body portion 4a there is a 5 laterally extending leg 40. This is bent laterally and downwardly toward leg 4b, as seen best in Fig. 3, so that when the clip is applied to a case I this portion has to be sprung outwardly. The portion 3c is of such length that it will have an 10 eiiective overlap on the cover when the clip is applied and it also is provided'at its end with downturned prongs 6 adapted to pierce the cover so as to hold the clip securely in place.
In applying a clip to the case, after the cover has been placed in position, the end portion 4b of the clip is brought up against the bottom edge of the cleat 2 so that the flange 5 will be projected into the joint between the end wall and cleat, as at 8 in Fig. 2, then the upper leg portion 40 of the clip is sprung outwardly and is snapped over the cover so that the cleat assumes the position shown in Fig. 1, closely overlying the corner of the case. The prongs 6 are then pressed into the cover and the cleat is thereby retained against slipping from position. Also, the spring pressure provided in the certain manner of bending of the clip retains the parts 413 and 4c tightly clamped against the cleat 2 and cover 3, respectively.
The device illustrated in Fig. 4 has a centrally depressed tooth to near the outer end of the part do as distinguished from the teeth 6 of the device of Fig. 3.
Clips of this character may be made of various sizes and may be used on a case in various numbers, dependent upon the size and contents of the particular case. The clips are easily and readily placed in position, without tools, and may be easily and readily removed simply by the insertion of a pointed tool beneath the clip end 40 and prying it upwardly. The clip does not destroy or mar the cover and may be used a number of times.
It is apparent that details of construction might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and for this reason I do not wish the claim to limit the structure only to the details illustrated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A cover attaching clip for an egg case, or the like, having a cleat attached to a wall of the case along an edge and a cover applied to the case with an end portion overlapping the cleat; sa
clip comprising a flat strip of resilient metal having a body portion with inwardly turned upper and lower end portions adapted, when the clip is functionally applied across the cleat, to overlie the end of the cover and to underlie the cleat, respectively, the lower end portion having a length equal to the thickness of the cleat and formed with an end hook to be embedded in the cleat, the upper end portions being formed at an acute angle with the body portion and said body portion being of a length equal to the width of the cleat plus the thickness of the cover so that application of the clip to the case will cause the upper end portion to be brought substantially to a right angle thereto, thus placing the clip under tension whereby the said end portions are caused to tightly grip against the cleat and cover.
