i 2o claims. ol. 27s-10s) mechanism enabling this movement will be apparent from the game structure which will now be described in detail.
Each game mechanism A comprises an inclined road or way II which is common to all the cars or trucks. There are curbs I2 dening the ways for individual trucks, slots I3 are cut in the road between curbs. At the high end of the road enlarged discharge openings I4 are provided. Vehicles run on the roadways and as shown herein simulate dump trucks. It is obvious however that other vehicles and types of ways may be used. The present disclosure is merely illustrative of one form in which the invention may be embodied. Depending from each vehicle frame is a pusher bar I5 extending through a slot I3. The body I 5 of the truck is pivotally mounted and normally urged to slanting position to discharge any article contained therein. On the frame of This invention relates toa game of skill wherein prizes in the form of articles are delivered. The present invention is capable of incorporation in a machine for vending merchandise. Broadly 5 the invention contemplates a prize carrying vehicle which may be moved to impinge against an adjustable target device and on striking the latter will deliver the prize. The vehicle has a substantially fixed path while the target is adjustable to be disposed inthe path of the Vehicle for engagement by an article delivery mechanism on the vehicle.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device of the character described which may be incorporated in a game simulating well known vehicles and operating in their current manner. In addition to the broader objects of this invention there are certain details of structure enabling the incorporation of the invention in an :assemblage inviting in appearance, holding the attention in operation and requiring a degree of skill in operation.
These objects together with other objects and corresponding accomplishments are obtained by means of the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Fig. l is a front View of a vending machine embodying the game mechanism; Fig. 2 is a section on an enlarged scale as seen on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section as seen on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a fragment of the vehicle roadway with a vehicle in sectional view; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through a fragment of a vehicle; Fig. 6 is a view as seen on the line 6 3 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the carriage catch; Fig. 8 is a plan View of the carriage catch; Fig. 9 is a sectional view as seen on the line 9 9 of Fig. 8; and Fig. 10 is a section through the target shoe as seen on the line Ill-I 0 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings and especially Fig. l, the invention is adapted for embodiment in a coin operated vending machine, wherein each time the machine is operated articles will be dispensed and an opportunity aorded to win a prize by skillful manipulation of the game structure. As the vending mechanism forms no part of the present invention, it is not illustrated or described in detail. However, a cabinet A as shown in Fig. l may house the vending mechanism and a plurality of game structures indicated by B. A single coin control C is adapted to be moved with its associated 29 in its upright position, as shown in Fig. 2. It mechanism so as to be disposed in coacting relawill be noted that shaft 21 diverges in direction .tion with any selected game mechanism. 'l'he from the roadway so that at the converging end end I8 to overlap the upper edge of the front wall of the body and maintain it in non-dumping position. An aperture in the catch I1 receives a striker stem IS, the lower endof the stembeing loosely disposed in a pocket on the frame. Thus, an unstable striker is provided for operating the catch to release the body and permit it to dump. On the rear end of the body is a depending apron 2U adapted to enter opening I4 and engage the marginal edge to detain the vehicle while dumping. The openings I4 lead to a. prize delivery chute 2l. The apron avoids the possibility of strewing the prize articles along the road.
The vehicle actuating mechanism comprises equipped rider 23 at the front embracing a guide rod 24. The guide rod 24 extends along the front of the cabinet A transverse to the path of the vehicles and at a suitable distance below the roadway Il. At the rear of frame 22 is a caster wheel 25 riding on a surface 25 to complete the ysupport for the frame. Mounted at the top of frame 22 is aV guide shaft 21 for a carriage 28 to ride thereon. Carriage 28 embraces shaft 21 and may be constructed in any suitable manner to have a sliding movement on shaft 21. At the rear upper end of carriage 28 is a hinged pusher plate 29 having a joint which limits swinging movement so that the plate will not swing to the rear past its upright position but may fold to the front. A suitable spring 29 tends to hold plate the vehicle is a spring catch I'I having akeeper a frame 22 of suitable form having a roller `which a pin 36 lextends laterally.
plate 29 will overlap pusher I5 and at the diverging end will be disposed out of engagement. Thus, the carriage may be caused to engage the pusher at the low end of the runway. Plate 2S permits the pusher to pass to the rear. By moving the carriage toward the high end, the pusher and vehicle will be moved to the top of the roadway and disengaged so the vehicle may return by gravity to the bottom.
In order to cause upward movement of the carriage and vehicle so that the speed of travel of the vehicle may not be manually controlled, I have provided resilient means to cause movement of the truck upwardly. A link 30 is hin-ged to carriage 28 and fulcrumed at its lower en-d by having the legs 0i a slot 33 at the lower end of link 38 straddle a pin 3! on the frame 22.
A tension spring 32 is secured .at one end to the frame elementl 22' and -connected at the other end to a cable 33 which is passed over a pulley`34.
The .cable is secured to link 33. This isa conl Venient means for urging link 30 to the rear and other equivalent means may be substituted therefor. To ihold the kcarriage 28 at the lower end and to release 4it at will, I have provided a catch mechanism.
The catch mechanism is best shown in Figs. l'1, Y.8- and 9 and comprises pivoted latch 35 from Bearing against the -upper face of latch 35 is a leaf spring 31 tending'to hold the latch in extended position.
Mounted on frame 22 is a trigger mechanism comprising a frame 38. A keeper 33 is fixed to frame 38 and has an upper surface 39a over which the latch pin 35 rides as the carriage is moved tothe right hand end of the contact with pin 36. Secured to the free end of trigger 43 is a chain or cable 4l which is connected to a'manually controlled mechanism hereinafter described. By pulling on cable 4|, the trigger 43 will Ybe engaged with pin 3G and may Vmovethe latter to a position in registration with face 39o of the keeper. This position is maintained against the action of leaf spring 31. The carriage 28 is now released and will move forward by the action of the link 38. In its initial movement and while pin 35 is riding on face 33o, the spring 31 effects a braking action to retard movement of the carriage and vehicle. Too envergetic a movement of the carriage at the beginning may displace the vehicle from engagement with the carriage. The braking eiiect prevents this. On release of the carriage, the Vehicle is projected to the high end of the roadway, the curve at the high end checking nnal movement. At the high end, the plate 29 disengages pusher l5 and the vehicle is freed to return by gravity to the low end of the roadway. The carriage remains at the high end, until it is restored to its low end.
To restore the carriage, I have provided a coupling. A slidable bar 42 has a coupling hook 43 pivotally secured to a laterally extending arm on the bar. The hook includes a laterally eX- tending roller 44 journalled on the hook body. A tension spring 45 tends to swing the hook toward link 30, its movement being limited by a stop 61. Depending from the end of hook 43 is f ating striker i9.
a guide nger 46 disposed to engage a can. 41. Cam 41 has an outer iace 41a. and an inner lace 51h. The cam is xed to a stem 48 journalled in a bracket on the frame and a spring 49 secured to the stem and frame urges the cam to the position shown in Fig. 3. As the hook is moved toward the left, finger 46 engages face 41a of the cam and the hook is swung out around link 3), then released from the cam to engage the link. By pulling slide 41E/toward the right, the link 38 and carriage 28 will be moved to the right and the trigger and catch mechanism engaged to hold the carriage for release by operation of trigger 43. In movement of the hook toward the right, nger 45 engages face 4112 of the cam and the latter is turned against the action of spring 259 to clear the finger.
kThe slide-42 is shown associated with a coin contr-ol. A frame 55 has a slide way for slide 5.2 and a nger hold 5i is disposed outside of cabinet A. An aperture 52 admits placing a coin in the coin aperture 53 to slide 42. In the upper face of frame 53 is an opening 54 which the coin aperture may traverse. Pivotally mounted on frame 55 is a lever 55 having anger 56 in registration with opening 54 and bearing on the slide 42. It will be noted that the nger is inclined on its upper face. If no coin is placed in aperture 53 and the slide is moved inwardly, finger 56 drops into the aperture and prevents movement of the slide to its innermost position or that suilicient for hook 43 to pass cam 41 and. engage link 33. If a coin is placed in the aperture, the iinger 56 rides over the coin aperture and permits engagement of the hook 43 with 'link 3l! and return of the link and carriage to the vehicle low position. The pawl like mechanism comprising plate 29 and pusher I5 enables the plate to pass in front of the pusher. mechanism. Cable 4l is secured to lever 55 so that when the lever is pulled down the trigger 40 is tripped to release the carriage. Below the frame 53 is a coin receiver 51 whose mouth is located inwardly of finger 55. wheel 58 insures the coin being dropped into receiver 51 when located tliereover. The insertion of a coin enables the slide to be moved so that hook 43 engages link 38. On return of the slide, nger 56 drops into the coin aperture 53 and rides thereover allowing the slide to be withdrawn to its full extent. If the slide is now pushed inwardly. nger 55 drops into aperture 53 and the marginal edge of the latter presses the nger and lever 55 downwardly causes trip ping of the catch and release of carriage 2S. This causes projection of the vehicle to the top oi the roadway and its release.
The vehicle body I6 is charged with an article to be dumped, and dumping is obtained by oper- A channel bar 59 extends across the cabinet A transverse to the path of travel oi' the Vehicles. Below the channel is a guide rod 6D and slidably mounted on the rod is a target 6|. The target is mounted so that it may rock on the rod in a pendulous manner. A nnger $2 on the target is disposed to engage a leg of the channel bar to limit its swinging movement toward the rear. Depending from the target is a stem carrying a leaf spring 63 forming a resilient stem and on the end of a stem is a target shoe 64 of torpedo shape. Target 6l is moved by cables 55 forming an endless belt with the target therein. The belt is passed over guide pulleys and moved Yby an operating roller 6G having a suitable hand Carriage 28 is then held by the catch l' A coin dislodger `wheel outside the cabinet. `If target shoe 64 is positioned to be squarely struck by striker i9; the truck will be dumped. Y I
' The trucks are lled rwith the prize articles. A player selects a truck and slides Vthe coin device 5l and thereby the vehicle operating mechanism to a position corresponding with the selected truck. The player then adjusts the target 'l so that in his opinion it is in line with the truck and that it will be struck bythe striker I9, he then inserts a coin in the coin slide 5l and pushes the latter fully in. This causes the coupling hook i3 to engage link 30, The slide is thereafter fully retracted tocause carriage 28 to engage the selec-ted vehicle. Further adjustment of the target shoe $4 may then be made if desired. Next the player pushes the slide in causing the carriage to be released and the vehicle is then projected along the roadway H toward the target shoe 64. The unstable striker I9 adds to the skill required to trip the dump body I6. The target shoe 64 also adds to the skill required because of its shape. lf. a strike is made the vehicle is dumped so that the articles fall into chute 2| and are delivered. The empty truck will remain at the top by reason of apron 20 engaging and holding on the edge of opening I4. If no'strike is made, the released truck returns with its load for further operation.
