IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-,WIRE STRETCHERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No: 200,377, dated February 19, 1878; application filed December 6, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OEARLEs S. DAVIS, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Wire Stretchers 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of my invention as it appears when applied to use, as will be hereinafter more fully described. Fig. 2 represents, upon an enlarged scale, a side view of my improved device, as will be hereinafter described; and Fig. 3 represents, also, upon an enlarged scale, a bottom view, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the "same, I will proceed to describe the invention more in detail.

1n the drawings, the parts marked A A represent fence-posts, the tops being shown in section to give a better view of the mode of applying my invention to use. B represents a strand of barbed fence-wire in process of being applied to the fence-posts set at suitable distances apart, two of the posts being shown in the drawings.

The wire is first laid along in the field beside the posts, and after being properly secured at one end to. a strong post, the operator takes hold of the wire at the other end, or at a suitable distance from the fastened end, by means of the jaws G Oby preference, a barb, a, being just in front of the projections D D on the lower sides of the j aws. Bythis arran gement the wire remains below the stretching device, and is not liable to be caught or bent, nor is it liable to interfere with the actions of the jaws or other parts of the device.

The rear ends E E of the jaws are provided with eyes a a, into which links I) b are inserted for connecting the swivel-eye c to the swivel-stem d, whose eye 6 is connected with the hook f of the adjustable clamp G, arranged to slide upon the straining-lever H, which is provided with a holding-head, I.

Lever H may be of any desired length, and I prefer to make it from gas or steam pipe, in which case it can be made, if desired, for convenience, in sections, and then screwed together, as indicated at J, where a screw-coup.- ling piece is shown. Only a portion of the lever is shown,'the rear end being broken olf for convenience of illustration.

Clamp G is provided with a set-screw, g,

by means of which the clamp can be securely held at any desired distance from the head I to obtain a greater or less leverage.

The head I is made at h, so that it will hold and work easy upon the cornerof the post, and that, too, Without wearing or injuring the same, while the swivel prevents cramping of the parts.

It will be observed that it requires but little strain on the long lever ends E E of the jaws to bring the latter so tight upon the wire that it cannot slip between them, even if the barb a was not in front of the projections.

As a matter of practice, therefore, in the use of the device, it is immaterial at what point of the wire the jaws of the clamp grasp it, provided such point is between two sets of barbs.

After the proper amount of tension has been secured upon the wire, by placing the head I upon or against the corner of the post for a fulcrum, and then drawing the end of lever H forward, the wire is fastened to the posts, in the usual manner, by means of staples.

Havin g described my improvements in fencewire stretchers, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with the jaws O O, of the projections D D, for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination, with the jaws O G, projections D D, and adjustable clamp G, of levers E E, links b I), hook f, and eyes a, c, and e, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
