UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. SELLON, OF NEW HUDSON, NEW YORK.
lMPROVEME NT IN STEAM-PUMP GOVERNORS- W Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,350, dated February 12, 1878 application filed January 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs A. SELLoN, of New Hudson, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a newand valuable Improvement in Steam-Pump Governors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is arepresentation of a side view of my steam-pump. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional details, of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a steampump governor, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents the water and steam tight case or tub, containing the float B. C is a waterboX attached to the outside of the case A, and divided by a vertical partition, into two chambers, O and 0 In the partition is an opening, which is opened and closed by a curved sliding gate, D, by means of a lever, E, passing into the case or tub A, and having the float B suspended from its inner end.
G is an alarm-lever, also passing through the side of the case or tub A, and having its inner end placed in a vertical loop, a, attached The outer end of this lever G is bent, as shown, and pressed, by means of a spring, E, into a rest, b, secured on the outside of the case. This end of the lever G supports the free end of a pivoted lever, I, on which the alarm-weight J is held.
The chambers O and G of the water-box O are, by pipes K and L, respectively, connected with the tank and pump.
M is an escape-pipe at the bottom of the case A. N is a water-pipe near the bottom of case, connecting with the boiler; and N is a steam-pipe near the top, connecting with the boiler also.
The pipe M is to be attached to the boiler on a level with the crown-sheet, and the pipe N near the top of the boiler.
Water then rises and falls in the case A the same as in the boiler, thereby raising and lowering the float B, according as the water rises and falls in the boiler. As the float rises it closes the gate D, which shuts off the water from the pump. As the float falls it opens thegate, which lets on more water.
In case the pump fails, the float lowers as the water goes down, and the gate rises to its full capacity; and when the float settles still a little lower, the loop a strikes the alarm-lever Gr, which causes the outer end thereof to pass out of the rest I) and release the lever I. This lever then drops down, and the weightJ slips off. Said weight, being connected to the boiler-whistle, sounds the alarm.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a steam-pump governor, the waterbox (1, divided into the two compartments 0 (1 having pipes communicating with the tank and pump, and provided with the curved gate D, in combination with the lever E, float B, and case A, constructed and arranged substantially as shown, and for-the purposes set forth. 1
2. In combination with the float B in the case A, the loop a, lever Gr, rest b, spring H, and pivoted lever I with the weight J, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. SELLON.
