5 Claims.
This invention relates to covers for containers and more particularly to covers for bottles for milk, cream and various beverages, and its principal object is to provide an improved cover for such containers which is composed of thick paper or like material and consists of a container mouth covering portion and a skirt portion depending therefrom provided with improved depending portions for securing it to the neck of the container.
Another object is to provide such depending portions in the form of tabs of different kinds. And a further object is to provide the depending portions or tabs of the skirt portion with two ply or doubled parts through which fastener tongues can be passed for securing the tabs in position when the container cover is in place on the container, said two ply portions being preferably formed by doubling under the end parts of such depending portions or tabs.
These and various other features of our improved container covers not hereinbefore men:
tioned but which will hereinafter be disclosed, are illustrated in the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a bottle and one form of our improved container cover applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Fig. 3 is a partial horizontal section enlarged taken on the line 33 ofFig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a partial vertical section- Fig. 5 is a plan of a portion of a strip of blanks for the form of our invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, in process of manufacture.
Fig. 6 is a plan of the same showing the blanks ready for application to containers.
Fig. 7 is a transverse section of the completed blank taken on the line 'I! of Fig. 6, and
Fig. 8 is a transverse section of the same taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
Like characters refer to like of the drawing.
Referring first to Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the drawing, we have here illustrated the blanks for the form of container cover shown in Figs. 1, 2,
parts in all figures 3 and 4 and each of said blanks has a multisided central or container mouth covering portion 3 formed by the scored lines 4 and is ordinarily imperforate. The numeral 5 indicates the skirt portion of the'blank and of the container cover, and this part of the blank 2 is further scored at 6 and 6a and is perforated or slotted at 20 forming two kinds of extending portions or tabs 9 and l0.
The extending portions or tabs 9 are preferably wider than the "tabs l0 and are scored at 2| so that the end parts 22 can be folded under the adjacent or overlying parts 23 as shown in Figs. '1, 3, 4 and 7, thus forming a double thickness of the material at the points of application of the fasteners or staples. Ordinarily in this form of the invention, the material is thick paper which may become softened on contact with liquid and the fasteners hereinafter described may cut 10 through the paper if only a single thickness of the same is provided on each extending portion or tab 9. Preferably two thicknesses of material are provided in the end portions of alternate tabs and this is done in the present form of the invention by doubling over the longer tabs thus forming a two ply end portion in the blank.
.Either of the end portions 9 and H] can be arranged in this way. On applying the blank to a container it will be seen that the tabs l0 overlap 20 the tabs 9 for reinforcing the skirt portion and the tabs ID are arranged uppermost or outwardly when they are in position on the container neck and the parts of the undermost tabs which may retain moisture are given additional strength 25 furnished by the doubling of the material at 22 and 23.
This form of the invention has short plaits l6 formed along the scorings 6 and 6a, but said plaits preferably do not extend more than halfway 30 down the 'skirt portion when the cover is applied to a container. By means of this construction the container cover is more readily adjusted to the small variations in the sizes of containers such as bottles, and which are inherent in the manu- 35 facture of such containers as bottles and the like of glass and material of similarv nature. Thus the skirt portion still retains the advantages of a non-perforated and plaited upper part. Each container cover is provided with a pulling 40 tab 25 herein shown at the lower left hand of each blank in Figs. 1, 5 and 6. Ordinarily it'projects down below the lower edge 26 of the'skirt portion 5 when the cover is in place on the container as illustrated in Fig. l.
The method of applying the blanks in this form of the container consists in centering the blanks by suitable means, (not shown) then placing it on the container mouth M, then pushing down the skirt portion 5 with its depending portions or tabs 9 and Ill until it reach the position shown in Fig.
1. It will be noted that the wider tabs 9 underly the tabs I 0 at the side edge parts of the respective tabs. Any suitable means may be employed to hold the tabs in position and the means prefer- 66 ably used are in the form of metallic fasteners such as the staples l8 which are then pushed through the overlapped side edge parts of the said tabs 9 and Ill, thus securing the skirt portion firmly on the container neck n.
The method of forming the material for this form of our invention is illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive and consists in first scoring the central or container mouth covering portions 3 in a strip of material l2, forming skirt portions 5 by suitable scorings 6 and 6a and perforating at 20 so as to form a plurality of extending portions or tabs 9 and I0 projecting or radiating from the central portions, then scoring or weakening parts, preferably adjoining or on connecting tabs between adjacent blanks to form severing portions as at l3, and then folding the end portions I2 of alternate tabs on the lines I so as to form two ply end parts. In some instances we may apply adhesive of suitable kind to the contacting surfaces of the two ply doubled under parts. Thus we have a more durable, and adjustable container cover and one adapted to be applied to the containers by machine.
It is apparent that changes and modifications can be made in our invention which will be within the scope and spirit thereof, and we do not therefore confine ourselves to the exact details of construction shown and described herein, and furthermore we do not confine ourselves to the precise details and order thereof in the method of forming the material for making container covers and the like except as defined by the appended claims.
What we claim is:
1. A container cover comprising a container mouth covering portion, a skirt portion depending therefrom having flaps ending in interlapped tabs, alternate tabs being primarily the longer and brought to equal length with the intermediate tabs by the folding of their end parts for assisting in holding thecover on the container, and fastening members having portions lying on and spanning the outer middle parts of said intermediate tabs and portions passed through the adjacent interlapped tabs.
2. A container cover comprising a multi-sided container mouth covering portion, a skirt portion depending therefrom having flaps extending from the side edges of the first mentioned portion and ending in tabs defined by outwardly extending ,end parts of the intermediate tabs and having parts passed through the interlapped tab parts whereby the tabs are clamped together.
3. A container cover comprising a container mouth covering portion, a skirt portion depending therefrom having a plurality of flaps ending in tabs interlapped at their side edge parts, said tabs defined by outwardly extending rectilinear slots in the skirt portion, alternate tabs having integral inwardly folded end parts whose side edges underlie those of the intermediate tabs, and a plurality of fastening members each spanning the middle of the end part of an intermediate tab and passed through the side edge parts of the adjacent tabs and whereby the same and the intermediate tabs are clamped together.
4. A container cover comprising a container mouth covering portion, a skirt portion depending therefrom having a plurality of depending tabs interlapped at their side edges, said tabs defined by rectilinear slots in the outer part of the skirt portion, alternate tabs having inwardly folded end parts, the lower side edge parts of said tabs underlying those of the intermediate tabs, and a plurality of wire staples having longitudinal parts lying directly against the middle portions of the end parts of said intermediate tabs and prong ALBERT F. PITYO. J. FRANK MITCHELL.
