- elongate element 170 is preferably cordage, it is capable of flexed and manipulated allowing a user to wrap it around a fixed object. Intermediate portion 170 A can be wrapped around a fixed object before disposing attachment members 173 , 174 on axle 37 for securement.
- attachment member 173 is clamped tightly between cap 34 and free end 160 of fork 154 and attachment member 174 is clamped tightly between the attachment nut and free end 161 of fork 154 , preventing removal of not only of wheel 153 but also device 156 and securing bicycle 158 to tree 180 with device 156 thus preventing theft of bicycle 158 .
- bicycle 158 is essentially secured from theft, because without handle 30 and its attached key 31 it would be very difficult to open assembly 150 .

- One manner of accomplishing this includes passing device through spokes 157 disposing intermediate portion 170 A between spokes 157 (FIG. 16) with attachment members 173 , 174 disposed at either side of wheel 153 , disposing attachment member 173 upon axle 37 between cap 34 and free end 160 of fork 154 locating axle 37 in slot 177 , disposing attachment member 174 upon axle 37 between the attachment member and free end 161 of fork 154 locating axle 37 in slot 178 , and then closing assembly 150 .
- attachment member 173 is clamped tightly between cap 34 and free end 160 of fork 154 and attachment member 174 is clamped tightly between the attachment nut and free end 161 of fork 154 , preventing removal of not only of wheel 153 but also device 156 .

Abstract
A wheel includes spokes attaching a rim to a hub. An assembly attaches a frame to the hub. A device is secured to the frame and has an intermediate portion that is capable of being used to encircle a fixed object and being disposed through the spokes preventing rotation of the wheel.
Description
- This invention relates to quick release devices for bicycles and to anti-theft devices for use with quick release devices and to other similar assemblies for removably attaching elements to a frame.
- Many road and mountain bikes incorporate wheels having hubs that are furnished with quick release assemblies that are useful for quickly attaching and detaching the wheels to and from the bicycle frame. Quick release assemblies are also utilized for seat posts and other removable components of bicycles. Most quick release assemblies incorporate a hand-operated lever that interacts with a cam, securing and releasing, for instance, the hub to and from the fork of a bicycle frame in response to operation of the lever. Because quick release assemblies allow removable components such as wheels to be removed from a bicycle frame very quickly, such removable components, especially wheels, are often stolen. Although skilled artisans have devoted considerable effort toward improving the structure and function of quick release assemblies, relatively little effort has been directed toward quick release assemblies that are designed to resist unwanted and unauthorized operation and to associated anti-theft attachments.
- Thus, there is a need for a new and improved quick release assembly that is easy to make, easy to use, inexpensive and highly efficient and that incorporates unique features and attachments that prevent theft and unwanted and unauthorized use.
- The above problems and others are at least partially solved and the above purposes and others realized in new and improved preferred embodiments of an invention that relate to devices anti-theft devices for bicycles and other wheeled frameworks. Apparatus of the invention includes an assembly attached to a frame and a device having first and second attachment ends secured to the frame by the assembly and an intermediate portion. The assembly includes a handle having a key and an axle carried by the frame. The axle has opposing first and second ends extending away from the frame. The first end of the axle carries a piston. The piston has a bore. A cam has first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore. One of the first and second ends of the cam has a keyway that is capable of receiving the key. The frame disposed on the axle adjacent the cap and the second end of the axle. In one embodiment, the first and second attachment ends of the device are secured between the cap and the frame. In another embodiment, the first attachment end secured between the cap and the frame and the second attachment end secured between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut. In yet another embodiment, the first and second attachment ends secured between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut. In one manner of installation, the intermediate portion of the device encircles a fixed object. In another manner of installation, the intermediate portion disposed to interfere with rotation of a wheel rotated to the frame.
- Another apparatus of the invention is a wheel including spokes attaching a rim to a hub, an assembly attaching a frame to the hub, and a device having an attachment end secured to the hub by the assembly and an abutment end disposed through the spokes interfering with rotation of the wheel. The assembly includes a handle having a key and an axle carried by the frame. The axle has opposing first and second ends extending away from the frame. The first end of the axle carries a piston. The piston has a bore. A cam has first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore. One of the first and second ends of the cam has a keyway that is capable of receiving the key. The frame disposed on the axle adjacent the cap and the second end of the axle. In one embodiment, the attachment end is secured between the cap and the frame. In another embodiment, the attachment end is secured between the secured between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut.

- Turning now to the drawings, in which like reference characters indicate corresponding elements throughout the several views, attention is first directed to FIG. 1 in which is seen a perspective view of a
quick release assembly 20, embodying the principle of the invention.Assembly 20 is disposed with ahub 21 that is attached to awheel 22 and to afork 23 of aframe 24, each partially depicted. In FIG. 1,frame 24 is a bicycle frame of a bicycle,fork 23 is the front fork offrame 24 andwheel 22 is the front wheel of the bicycle.Hub 21 is attached tospokes 25 ofwheel 22 in a conventional manner. - Looking to FIGS. 2 and 3,
assembly 20 includeshandle 30 having a key 31, apiston 32 having abore 40, acap 34 having anopen end 34A and aclosed end 34B, acam 33 held bycap 34 for rotation inbore 40 and having akeyway 56 that is capable of receivingkey 31, and a catch assembly 70 (FIG. 3). FIG. 4 is a side elevation ofhandle 30, the opposite side elevation being a mirror image thereof. FIG. 5 is a bottom plan ofhandle 30. With specific regard to FIG. 2, ahollow axle 35 extends throughhub 21. Anut 36 threadably securesaxle 35 tohub 21, andassembly 20 attaches toaxle 35 immediatelyadjacent fork 23.Open end 34A ofcap 34 is directed towardfork 23, andclosed end 34B ofcap 34 is directed away fromfork 23. Anaxle 37 is slideably disposed throughaxle 35 and, in this embodiment, is attached topiston 32.Axle 37 is capable of reciprocating throughaxle 35 and is considered reciprocated tohub 21. Becauseaxle 37 is reciprocated tohub 21,piston 32 is also considered reciprocally mounted. Although not shown by way of illustration,axle 37 extends through and slightly beyondaxle 35, and a nut threadably secures this exposed end ofaxle 37 to fork 23.Bore 40 extends throughpiston 32 andcap 34 fits over and surroundspiston 32.Cam 33 is rotatably disposed throughbore 40 and is rotated to cap 34. Included incam 33 is acam body 45 that is rotatably disposed throughbore 40 ofpiston 32. The outer diameter ofcam body 45 that extends throughbore 40 is slightly less than the inner diameter ofbore 40, and this permitscam body 45 to rotate withinbore 40.Cam body 45 has opposing ends 50,51 disposed on either side ofpiston 32 that are held bycap 34 for rotation.End 50 extends into and is held for rotation by anopening 52 ofcap 34 and end 51 extends into and is held for rotation by arecess 53 ofcap 34 opposingopening 52.End 51 can be fashioned with a recess and cap 34 can be fashioned with an extension or protuberance for rotatably accommodating the recess ofend 51 if desired. Aclamp 58 located adjacent the underside ofpiston 32 attaches and secures anannular groove 59 formed intocam 33proximate end 51, which, in cooperation withpiston 32, securespiston 33 to cap 34 preventing it from discharging throughopening 52. -
End 50 ofcam 33 is cylindrical and enlarged relative tocam body 45, and this is readily visualized in FIGS. 2 and 3.End 50 is capable of being rotated in opening 52 and defines an axis of rotation A (FIGS. 2,9,10) that is substantially concentric with the geometric center of opening 52 (FIG. 2).Keyway 56 extends intoend 50 and defines a geometric center that is substantially concentric with axis of rotation A, as defined byend 50. Accordingly, the geometric center ofkeyway 56 is eccentric tocam body 45 and, more particularly, to axis ofrotation B. End 50 is considered a key receiving member ofcam 33.Cam body 45 is capable of being rotated inbore 40 at its axis of rotation B (FIGS. 2,9,10), which is substantially concentric with the geometric center ofbore 40 and eccentric to the geometric center ofopening 52. As a result, the geometric center ofbore 40 is eccentric to the geometric center ofopening 52. Aspring 60 is located betweenfork 23 andpiston 32, encirclesaxle 37 andbiases piston 32 away fromfork 23 and otherwise towardcap 34. - To
secure wheel 22 to fork 23, a cyclist takes uphandle 30 and inserts key 31 intokeyway 56 ofcam 33 as shown in FIG. 2. Rotation ofhandle 30rotates cam 33rotating cam body 45 withinbore 40 ofpiston 32 causingpiston 32,cam 33 andcap 34 to move. By selectively rotatingcam 33,assembly 20 is capable of being moved between an openposition releasing fork 23 and a closedposition securing fork 23. In the open position ofassembly 20,cap 34 is disposed away fromfork 23 allowing removal ofwheel 22. In the closed position ofassembly 20,end 34A ofcap 34 bears tightly up againstfork 23 preventing removal ofwheel 22. -
Handle 30 is not provided with an attached cam as with prior art quick release assemblies, but is provided with key 31, which permits handle 30 to function not only to rotatecam 33 as previously explained but also to lockassembly 20 to prevent the likelihood of theft ofwheel 22. With regard to FIG. 11, key 31 demonstrates a specific shape and keyway 56 (FIGS. 3,9) is correspondingly shaped to accept key 31.Key 31 andkeyway 56 can embody a potentially infinite variety of complementing shapes. In the immediate embodiment, a central blind bore 62 extends intokey 31, which is capable of accepting aguide pin 63 disposed centrally ofkeyway 56. - When
assembly 20 is in its closedposition securing fork 23, removing handle fromassembly 20 preventswheel 22 from be stolen because unless one has a handle with a duplicate key rotation ofcam 33 is not possible and removal ofwheel 22 becomes extremely difficult if not impossible.Handle 30 usually removed fromassembly 20 when the bicycle is unattended. When thebicycle incorporating assembly 20 is in use, most cyclists prefer to keephandle 30 attached toassembly 20. However, it has been noticed that because there isnothing locking handle 30 toassembly 20, handle 30 is free to fall away fromassembly 20, causing it to be lost. In accordance with the principle of the invention, key 31 andcam 33 are furnished withcatch assembly 70, which locks key 31 tokeyway 56, preventing key 31 from inadvertently falling away fromkeyway 56 except with a force that is sufficient to overcome the locking action ofcatch assembly 70. - In the immediate embodiment,
catch assembly 70 includes a protuberance 71 (FIGS. 6-8) carried bycam 33 and a detachably engageable recess 72 (FIGS. 3,4,11) carried bykey 31. Regarding FIG. 6, abore 73 extends throughend 50 ofcam 33 to an opening 74 (FIG. 8) leading tokeyway 56.Protuberance 71 is located at opening 74, and although opening permitsprotuberance 71 to extend partially intokeyway 56 as depicted in FIG. 8, opening 74 is too small to permit protuberance to fall away frombore 74 intokeyway 56. Aspring 75 is captured inbore 73 betweenprotuberance 71 and a nut threadably attached to the outer opening leading to bore 73.Spring 75 bears againstnut 76 andprotuberance 71 and biases protuberance toward or otherwise intokeyway 56.Key 31 encounters protuberance 71 when inserted intokeyway 56. Exerting a force against key 31 towardkeyway 56 that is sufficient to overcome the bias ofspring 75 allows key 31 to pushprotuberance 71 away fromkeyway 56 forcing it into bore 73 allowing key 31 to pass thereby intokeyway 56 until the point whenprotuberance 71encounters recess 72. When protuberance 71encounters recess 72, the bias provided byspring 75 forces protuberance 71 into engagement into and againstrecess 72 securingkey 31 tocam 33, securinghandle 30 tocam 33 to prevent handle 30 from inadvertently falling away fromcam 30. In this way, abicycle incorporating assembly 20 can be used and ridden withhandle 30 attached without risk ofhandle 30 inadvertently becoming detached fromcam 33. The only way to removehandle 30 is to reverse the foregoing operation by taking uphandle 30 and pulling on it with a force that is sufficient 31 to overcome the bias provided byspring 75, detachingprotuberance 71 fromrecess 72. The positioning ofprotuberance 71 andrecess 72 can be reversed, withrecess 72 carried bycam 33 atkeyway 56 andprotuberance 71 carried by key 31 in a fashion like that ofcam 33 so as to extend outwardly of, and be biased away from, key 31. Also, although only one protuberance and complementing recess are immediately depicted, any reasonable number of protuberances and complementing recesses can be employed if desired. - In sum, when key31 is inserted into
keyway 56 andprotuberance 71 engagesrecess 72, handle 30 is prevented from falling out ofassembly 20. Accordingly, a cyclist can use the bicycle withhandle 30 in place. When the cyclist wants to park the bicycle and remove the front wheel, handle 30 may be used to release the wheel from the fork. However, if the cyclist removes handle 30 while the wheel is locked in place to the fork, it would be extremely difficult for someone without the key to remove the wheel. - Attention is now directed to FIGS. 12 and 13, in which there is seen an alternate embodiment of a quick release assembly of the invention, generally designated by the
reference character 100. In common with the previously described embodiment designated 20, the immediate embodiment shares handle 30, key 31,piston 32, bore 40 (FIG. 13),axle 37,cap 34,cam 33 includingcam body 45 and ends 50 and 51 andkeyway 56,clamp 58,spring 60,pin 63 and other common structural components. However,cam 33 is fabricated of magnetic material and key 31 is fabricated of iron or steel. The magnetism ofcam 33 has the property of attractingkey 31. In this way, abicycle incorporating assembly 100 can be used and ridden withhandle 30 attached without risk ofhandle 30 inadvertently becoming detached fromcam 33, with the magnetic coupling or engagement betweenkey 31 andcam 33 functioning to prevent handle from inadvertently becoming detached fromcam 33. The only way to removehandle 30 is to pull on it with a force that is sufficient 31 to overcome the magnetic attraction betweenkey 31 andcam 33, detaching key 31 fromcam 33.Key 31 can be constructed from magnetic material andcam 33 from iron or steel if desired. Also, key 31 andcam 33 can each be constructed from magnets if desired for increasing the magnetic attraction between them. The magnetic attraction/engageability betweenkey 30 ofhandle 30 andcam 33 is considered an alternate embodiment of a catch assembly of the invention. Becausekey 31 is considered part ofhandle 30, the magnetic coupling attribute ofassembly 100 is considered between and facilitated byhandle 30 andcam 33. - In
sum regarding assembly 100, when key 31 is inserted intokeyway 56 andkey 31 ofhandle 30 is magnetically coupled tocam 33, handle 30 is prevented from falling out ofassembly 100. Accordingly, a cyclist can use the bicycle withhandle 30 in place. When the cyclist wants to park the bicycle and remove the front wheel, handle 30 may be used to release the wheel from the fork. However, if the cyclist removes handle 30 while the wheel is locked in place to the fork, it would be extremely difficult for someone without the key to remove the wheel. - Attention is now directed to FIGS. 14 and 15, in which there is seen an alternate embodiment of a quick release assembly of the invention, generally designated by the
reference character 110. Looking to FIG. 14, and in common with the previously described embodiment designated 20, the immediate embodiment shares handle 30, key 31,piston 32, bore 40,axle 37,cap 34,cam 33 including cam body 45 (FIG. 15),keyway 56,pin 63 and other common structural components. However,assembly 110 is furnished with acatch assembly 111 that includes a pair ofprotuberances cam 33 and a pair of detachably engageable recesses 122,123 carried bykey 31.Protuberances keyway 56 along either side ofpin 63 and are the opposing sides of aU-shaped spring 124 attached tocam 33.Spring 124 extends through openings 125,126 formed into and throughend 50 ofcam 30, which actually blend intorecess 130,131 (FIG. 15) located atkeyway 56 on either side ofpin 63.Protuberances recesses keyway 56 away fromrecesses Recesses key 31. -
Key 31encounters protuberances keyway 56. Exerting a force against key 31 towardkeyway 56 that is sufficient to overcome the bias ofprotuberances protuberances keyway 56 forcing them intorecesses keyway 56 until the point whenprotuberances protuberances spring 124forces protuberances recesses cam 33, securinghandle 30 tocam 33 to prevent handle 30 from inadvertently falling away fromcam 30. In this way, abicycle incorporating assembly 110 can be used and ridden withhandle 30 attached without risk ofhandle 30 inadvertently becoming detached fromcam 33. The only way to removehandle 30 is to reverse the foregoing operation by taking uphandle 30 and pulling on it with a force that is sufficient 31 to overcome the bias provided byspring 124, detachingprotuberances recesses protuberances recesses cam 33 atkeyway 56 andprotuberances 120,121 (spring 124) carried by key 31 so as to extend outwardly of, and be biased away from, key 31. - In sum, when key31 is inserted into
keyway 56 andprotuberances recesses assembly 110. Accordingly, a cyclist can use the bicycle withhandle 30 in place. When the cyclist wants to park the bicycle and remove the front wheel, handle 30 may be used to release the wheel from the fork. However, if the cyclist removes handle 30 while the wheel is locked in place to the fork, it would be extremely difficult for someone without the key to remove the wheel. - Attention is now directed to FIGS. 16 and 17, in which there is seen a perspective view of a
quick release assembly 150 disposed with ahub 152 that is attached to awheel 153 and to afork 154 of aframe 155, each partially depicted, and anantitheft device 156 attached to frame 155 andhub 152 withassembly 150, in accordance with the principle of the invention.Assembly 150 removably secureswheel 153 to frame 155. Whenassembly 150 secureswheel 153 to frame 155,assembly 150 is attached to frame 155.Wheel 153 is simply an element attached to frame 155.Assembly 150 can be attached to frame 155 at other locations for removably attaching another element to frame 155, such as a seat, another wheel, etc.Hub 152 can be considered part of or otherwise an extension offrame 155 when it is attached thereto. In FIG. 16,frame 155 is a bicycle frame of abicycle 158, and yet frame 155 can, in accordance with the present embodiment of the invention, be another type of frame. In the instant embodiment,fork 154 is the front fork offrame 155 andwheel 153 is the front wheel ofbicycle 158.Hub 152 is attached tospokes 157 ofwheel 153 in a conventional manner.Spokes 157 attach a rim (not shown) tohub 152 in a conventional manner. In common with the previously described embodiment designated 20,assembly 150, as illustrated in FIG. 17, shares handle 30, key 31,piston 32, bore 40,axle 37,cap 34,nut 36,cam 33 includingcam body 45 and ends 50 and 51 andkeyway 56,clamp 58,spring 60 and other common structural components.Axle 37 extends through and is carried byhub 21.Axle 37 has opposing ends that extend slightly beyondhub 21.Piston 32 is carried by one of the opposing ends ofaxle 37 and a threaded attachment nut is carried by the other of the opposing ends ofaxle 37 in a conventional and well known manner. In attachingframe 155 tohub 152, afree end 160 offork 154 is disposed onaxle 37 betweencap 34 andhub 21, receivesaxle 37 and is secured by and betweencap 34 andhub 21, and the other free end 161 (FIG. 16) offork 154 is disposed onaxle 37 between the attachment nut andhub 21, receivesaxle 37 and is secured by and between the attachment nut andhub 21. To securewheel 153 to fork 154, a cyclist takes uphandle 30 and inserts key 31 intokeyway 56 ofcam 33. Rotation ofhandle 30rotates cam 33rotating cam body 45 withinbore 40 ofpiston 32 causingpiston 32,cam 33 andcap 34 to move. By selectively rotatingcam 33,assembly 150 is capable of being moved between an openposition releasing fork 154 and a closedposition securing fork 154. In the open position ofassembly 150,cap 34 and the opposing attachment nut are disposed away fromfork 23 allowing removal ofwheel 22. In the closed position ofassembly 20,cap 34 bears tightly up againstfree end 160 offork 154 and the opposing attachment nut bears tightly up againstfree end 161 offork 154, preventing removal ofwheel 153.Assembly 150 is used on conjunction withdevice 156 and is disclosed as a matter of example and not as a matter of limitation to the scope of the invention relating todevice 156.Device 156 can be employed with other assembly forms that removably attach elements to a frame in any way, whether similar toassembly 150 or different. This is also the case the antitheft device depicted in FIGS. 20-23 and the device depicted in FIGS. 24 and 25, which are both discussed later in this specification. - Turning to FIG. 18,
device 156 is anelongate element 170 having opposing ends 171,172 and an intermediate portion therebetween, which is denoted generally at 170A.Ends support attachment members attachment members element 170 is cordage fashioned from twisted strands of steel, namely, steel cable. As a result,element 170 is flexible, as is the case with steel cable. Steel cable is rugged and strong. Accordingly, other forms of cable that are similarly strong and rugged can be used.Element 170 can be fashioned from rigid steel if desired, such as steel bar stock.Element 170 can also be fashioned from titanium, aluminum, a selected metal alloy, etc.Element 170 can be any desired length.Attachment members sockets 175,176 disposed at rearward ends 173B,174B, respectively. Ends 173B,174B are considered attachment ends.Sockets 175,176 receive and secure ends 171,172, respectively, are crimped against ends 171,172 and also welded thereto for facilitating a rugged engagement.Ends 173A,174A are formed with forwardlydisposed slots -
Device 156 is capable of being attached tohub 152 withassembly 150 in a number of ways and serves many useful functions. In the open position ofassembly 150, one manner of use ofdevice 156 involves attachingdevice 156 to a bicycle and securing the bicycle to a fixed object withdevice 156 for inhibiting theft of the bicycle. One manner of accomplishing this includes disposingattachment member 173 uponaxle 37 betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154 locatingaxle 37 inslot 177, wrappingintermediate portion 170A around a fixed object such as a lamppost, atree 180 as shown in FIG. 19 or other fixed object, disposingattachment member 174 uponaxle 37 between the attachment member andfree end 161 offork 154 locatingaxle 37 inslot 178, and then closingassembly 150. Becauseelongate element 170 is preferably cordage, it is capable of flexed and manipulated allowing a user to wrap it around a fixed object.Intermediate portion 170A can be wrapped around a fixed object before disposingattachment members axle 37 for securement. In the closed position ofassembly 150,attachment member 173 is clamped tightly betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154 andattachment member 174 is clamped tightly between the attachment nut andfree end 161 offork 154, preventing removal of not only ofwheel 153 but alsodevice 156 and securingbicycle 158 totree 180 withdevice 156 thus preventing theft ofbicycle 158. By removing key 31 fromkeyway 56 and reducing handle 30 (and thus key 31) to a secure place such as a pocket or purse,bicycle 158 is essentially secured from theft, because withouthandle 30 and its attached key 31 it would be very difficult to openassembly 150. Reversing the foregoing operation removesdevice 156 permitting normal use of the bicycle. Although the immediate example illustratesattachment members hub 152 outboard offork 154, they can be secured inboard of free ends 160,161 of fork between free ends 160,161 andhub 21.Attachments members 173 can also each be together attached and secured betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154, or between the attachment nut andfree end 161 offork 154.Attachment members - It is within the scope of the invention that one end of
device 156 be secured to frame 155 at a selected location, such as to fork 154 or some other location, and the other end ofdevice 156 be furnished with an attachment member that is capable of being secured byassembly 150 as disclosed, and that this arrangement would allow such a device to be employed for encircling a fixed object and disposed so as to prevent a wheel from rotating. As a matter of example, an end ofdevice 156 could be reciprocally secured to frame 155 in a receptacle attached to frame 166 permitting movement ofdevice 156 between a retracted condition so as to be stored and deployed condition permitting the other end of device to be secured withassembly 150. - In the open position of
assembly 150, another manner of use ofdevice 156 involves usingdevice 156 to inhibitwheel 153 from rotating for inhibiting unauthorized use ofbicycle 158. One manner of accomplishing this includes passing device throughspokes 157 disposingintermediate portion 170A between spokes 157 (FIG. 16) withattachment members wheel 153, disposingattachment member 173 uponaxle 37 betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154 locatingaxle 37 inslot 177, disposingattachment member 174 uponaxle 37 between the attachment member andfree end 161 offork 154 locatingaxle 37 inslot 178, and then closingassembly 150. In the closed position ofassembly 150,attachment member 173 is clamped tightly betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154 andattachment member 174 is clamped tightly between the attachment nut andfree end 161 offork 154, preventing removal of not only ofwheel 153 but alsodevice 156. Withintermediate portion 170A, which is considered an abutment element in this instance, disposed through or otherwise atspokes 157 betweenfork 154,intermediate portion 170A is capable of interacting withspokes 157 preventingwheel 153 from rotating. By removing key 31 fromkeyway 56 and reducing handle 30 (and thus key 31) to a secure place such as a pocket or purse,bicycle 158 is essentially secured from unauthorized use, because withouthandle 30 and its attached key 31 it would be very difficult to openassembly 150. Reversing the foregoing operation removesdevice 156 permitting normal use of the bicycle. Although the immediate example illustratesattachment members hub 152 outboard offork 154, they can be secured inboard of free ends 160,161 offork 154 between free ends 160,161 andhub 21. One attachment member can be attached outboard of one of the free ends of the fork and the other inboard of the other of the free ends of the fork if desired. To enhance the frictional engagement ofattachment members element 170 can be formed of rigid stock, such as rigid steel or other form of rigid, rugged bar stock. - In the open position of
assembly 150, still another manner of installment ofdevice 156 includes disposingattachment member 173 uponaxle 37 betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154 locatingaxle 37 inslot 177, passingattachment member 174 throughspokes 157 from one side ofwheel 153 to the other disposing a length ofintermediate portion 170A betweenspokes 157, passingattachment member 174 back betweenspokes 157 towardattachment member 173 at another location disposing another length ofintermediate portion 170A betweenspokes 157, disposingattachment member 174 next toattachment member 173 uponaxle 37 betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154 locatingaxle 37 inslot 178, and then closingassembly 150. In the closed position ofassembly 150,attachment members cap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154, preventing removal of not only ofwheel 153 but alsodevice 156. With the lengths ofintermediate portion 170A disposed atspokes 157 between the outer extremities ofhub 152, the lengths ofintermediate portion 170A, which are considered abutment elements, interact withspokes 157 preventingwheel 153 from rotating. Reversing the foregoing operation removesdevice 156 permitting normal use of the bicycle. This manner of installment can also be employed at the other end ofaxle 37 with the attachment nut. - Attention is now directed to FIG. 20, in which there is seen a perspective view of a
quick release assembly 150 disposed withhub 152 that is attached towheel 153 and to fork 154 offrame 155 ofbicycle 158, each partially depicted, and anantitheft device 195 attached tohub 152 withassembly 150, in accordance with the principle of the invention. Turning to FIG. 21,device 195 includes a generally L-shapedelement 200 having anattachment end 201 and an abutment element or end 202 extending away fromattachment end 201. An attachedattachment member 203 characterizesattachment end 201.Attachment member 203 has aforward end 204, arearward end 205, and asocket 206 disposed atrearward end 205.Socket 206 receives and securesend 201, is crimped againstend 201 and also welded thereto for facilitating a rugged engagement.Element 200 andattachment member 203 are rugged and strong and preferably constructed of steel, titanium, aluminum, a selected metal alloy, or other similarly rugged and strong material and they can be integrally formed if desired.Attachment member 203 is flat and somewhat thin in cross section, and is formed with a forwardlydisposed slot 207, bifurcating forward end 204. FIG. 22 illustrates a front elevation ofdevice 195 and FIG. 23 illustrates a side elevation ofdevice 195, the opposite side elevation being a substantial mirror image. -
Device 195 is capable of being attached to frame 155 and tohub 152 withassembly 150 in a number of ways and serves the useful function of inhibiting unauthorized use ofbicycle 158. In the open position ofassembly 150, wherein its structural features are best seen in FIG. 17, one manner of installation and use ofdevice 195 involves disposingattachment member 203 uponaxle 37 betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154 locatingaxle 37 inslot 207 directingabutment end 202 throughspokes 157 confrontingfork 154 as depicted in FIG. 20 and then closingassembly 150. In the closed position ofassembly 150,attachment member 203 is clamped tightly betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154 preventing removal of not only ofwheel 153 but alsodevice 195. Becauseabutment end 202 extends into or otherwise throughspokes 157 confrontingfork 154 as depicted in FIG. 20,abutment end 202 interacts withspokes 157 preventingwheel 153 from rotating, which prevents unauthorized use ofbicycle 158. By removing key 31 fromkeyway 56 and reducing handle 30 (and thus key 31) to a secure place such as a pocket or purse,bicycle 158 is essentially secured from unauthorized use, because withouthandle 30 and its attached key 31 it would be very difficult to openassembly 150. Reversing the foregoing operation removesdevice 195 permitting normal use of the bicycle. Although the immediate example illustratesattachment member 203 secured betweencap 34 andfree end 160 offork 154, it can be similarly secured betweenfree end 161 offork 154 and the attachment nut if desired. To enhance the frictional engagement ofattachment member 203, its surfaces can be knurled. - Although
device 195 incorporates only asingle abutment end 202,device 195 can be fashioned with more if desired. As a matter of example, FIG. 24 depicts a perspective view of a such adevice 210 incorporating two abutment ends. FIG. 25 is a front elevation ofdevice 210. It will be further understood that althoughdevices - This specification discloses preferred embodiments of the invention. Those skilled in the art will further recognize that changes and modifications may be made to the described embodiments without departing from nature and scope of the invention. Accordingly, any such changes and modifications to the preferred embodiments are intended to be included within the scope of the invention as assessed only by a fair interpretation of the ensuing claims.
- Having fully described the various embodiments of the invention in such clear and concise terms as to enable those skilled in the art to understand and practice the same, the invention claimed is:
Claims (18)
1. Apparatus comprising:
an assembly attached to a frame; and
a device having first and second attachment ends secured to the frame by the assembly and an intermediate portion.
2. Apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
a piston carried by an axle attached to the frame, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key; and
the first and second attachment ends secured between the cap and the frame.
3. Apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
an axle carried by the frame, the axle having opposing first and second ends extending away from the frame,
a piston carried by the first end of the axle, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key;
the frame disposed on the axle adjacent the cap and the second end of the axle;
the first attachment end secured between the cap and the frame; and
the second attachment end secured between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut.
4. Apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
an axle carried by the frame, the axle having opposing first and second ends extending away from the frame,
a piston carried by the first end of the axle, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key;
the frame disposed on the axle adjacent the cap and the second end of the axle;
the first and second attachment ends secured between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut.
5. Apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising the intermediate portion encircling a fixed object.
6. Apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a wheel rotated to the frame and the intermediate portion disposed to interfere with rotation of the wheel.
7. Apparatus comprising:
a wheel including spokes attaching a rim to a hub;
an assembly attaching a frame to the hub;
a device having an attachment end secured to the hub by the assembly and an abutment end disposed through the spokes interfering with rotation of the wheel.
8. Apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising:
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
a piston carried by an axle attached to the frame, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key;
the attachment end secured between the cap and the frame.
9. Apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising:
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
an axle carried by the frame, the axle having opposing first and second ends extending away from the frame,
a piston carried by the first end of the axle, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key; and
the frame disposed on the axle adjacent the cap and the second end of the axle;
the attachment end secured between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut.
10. In an element having an assembly attaching a frame, a method comprising steps of:
providing a device having first and second attachment ends and an intermediate portion therebetween;
wrapping the intermediate portion around a fixed object;
securing the first attachment end to the frame with the assembly; and
securing the second attachment end to the frame with the assembly.
11. The method of claim 10 ,
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
a piston carried by an axle attached to the frame, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key:
wherein the step of securing the first attachment end to the frame with the assembly comprises securing the first attachment end between the cap and the frame.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of securing the second attachment end to the frame with the assembly comprises securing the second attachment end between the cap and the frame.
13. The method of claim 10 ,
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
an axle carried by the frame, the axle having opposing first and second ends extending away from the frame,
a piston carried by the first end of the axle, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key; and
the frame disposed on the axle adjacent the cap and the second end of the axle:
wherein the step of securing the first attachment end to the frame with the assembly comprises securing the first attachment end one of a)between the cap and the frame and b)between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut.
14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of securing the second attachment end to the frame with the assembly comprises securing the second attachment end one of a)between the cap and the frame and b)between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut.
15. The method of claim 10 ,
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
an axle carried by the frame, the axle having opposing first and second ends extending away from the frame,
a piston carried by the first end of the axle, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key; and
the frame disposed on the axle adjacent the cap and the second end of the axle:
wherein the step of securing the first attachment end to the frame with the assembly comprises securing the first attachment end one of a)between the cap and the frame and b)between the second end of the axle and the frame; and
wherein the step of securing the second attachment end to the frame with the assembly comprises securing the second attachment end the other of a)between the cap and the frame and b)between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut.
16. In a wheel including spokes attaching a rim to a hub and an assembly attaching a frame to the hub, a method comprising steps of:
providing a device having an attachment end and an abutment end extending away from the attachment end; and
securing the attachment end to the frame with the assembly disposing the abutment through the spokes.
17. The method of claim 16 ,
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
a piston carried by an axle attached to the frame, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key;
wherein the step of securing the attachment end to the frame with the assembly comprises securing the attachment end between the cap and the frame.
18. The method of claim 16 ,
the assembly comprising
a handle having a key,
an axle carried by the frame, the axle having opposing first and second ends extending away from the frame,
a piston carried by the first end of the axle, the piston having a bore, and
a cam having first and second ends held by a cap for rotation in the bore, one of the first and second ends of the cam having a keyway capable of receiving the key; and
the frame disposed on the axle adjacent the cap and the second end of the axle;
wherein the step of securing the attachment end to the frame with the assembly comprises securing the attachment end between the second end of the axle and the frame with an attachment nut.
