THOMASMA SEAT COVER HOLDER I 3 Sheets-Sheet 5 Filed May 2 1932 Patented May 28, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to an improved and novel construction of holder, for sanitary seat covers, made entirely of metal, and by means of which a pad .or pack of the seat covers are held and which insures there will be no waste in use of the covers and that normally one only of the covers will be used at a time.

The present invention is concerned with many novel improvements in' construction over the construction shown in my pending application Serial No. 494,557, filed November 10th, 1930, whereby the construction may be made lighter and more practical, and present a better and more at tractive appearance.

An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,

Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawings.

The bowl I and the seat 2 located thereover may be any conventional construction. The seat is hingedly mounted for turning to an upper position on hinge members or posts 3, which pass through a rear extension la on the bowl (see Fig. 2) and are held in place by nuts, two of the hinges including posts 3 being used spaced from each other.

A mounting device for the holder of the covers is utilized comprising a flat plate 4 of metal, having spaced apart projections at each end extending to one side, which projections are divided to 55 provide pairs of fingers 5 (Fig. 6). Pins 6 are secured at their lower ends to the plate in spaced apart relation to each other, extend upwardly and are inclined slightly to the rear, and each, at its lower portion immediately above the plate, is equipped with a collar l integral therewith. The pins preferably are of a tapered form, tapering toward their upper ends. This mounting means for the package holder is adapted to be securely connected to and at the rear portion of the bowl I by loosening the nuts at the lower end of the posts 3, inserting the fingers 5 underneath the flared portions of the posts, as shown in Fig. 2, the fingers 5 going to each side of the threaded portion of the bolts which extend downwardly through the part Ia, and then by tightening the nuts, the mounting device is held securely in place.

The holder for the sanitary covers includes in its construction a back 8 of sheet metal from which at all of its sides except the lower end a flange 9 is turned forwardly" terminating in an outwardly turned bead l0, this forming a receptacle in which the covers maybe placed. The back is of a substantially oval form corresponding substantially to the shape of the seat 2 and at its lower end has a downwardly extending portion. The flange 9 and bead III at each side of the lower end of said portion are spaced apart and extend to the lower edge of the back 8, as shown in Fig. 4. a -Q At the lower end of the receptacle formed by the back 8 and the'sides 9 aplate H is located against the front side of the'lower portion of the plate 8, having flanges l2 at its side edges which bear against the inner sides of the flanges 9, as shown in Fig. 5, being securedin place permanently by spot welding or equivalent fastening. This'plate extends downwardly below the lower edge of the back 8,as shown in Fig. 3. At the front of the lower portion of the plate I i a sheet metal member is provided having afront side I3, inturned vertical sides I 4 and outturned flanges i5 which bear against the plate I l and are secured thereto byspot welding, thereby forming a pocket open at its upper and lower ends between the plate H and the front portion l3 of the member described (see Fig. 5).

At the rear side of the back 8 two vertical spaced apart; channel members l6 are located having outturned flanges I'l bearing against the rear sides of the plates 8 and I I and permanently secured thereto by spot welding the flanges I! to the same. These members l6 give strength and rigidity to the holder. Preferably they are of a tapered form decreasing in cross section toward their upper ends. In the lower end of each of the channel shaped members l6 a bracket I8 of metal is secured having lips or ears I9 turned therefrom at both the upper and lower ends, through which openings are made for the passage of the pins 8 of the mounting member described. In Fig. 8 the manner in which the pins 6 may be inserted through the openings in the ears I9 is fully shown, and it is apparent that the holder may be readily removed from the pins and as readily replaced thereon to rest on the collars 1.

In the central portion of the back 3 an opening is made and through said opening a sheet metal filler member is inserted, having a front side 29 annular flanges 2E pressed therefrom and extending rearwardly and terminating in an outturned annular flange 22 which comes against the rear side of the back 8 and is permanently secured thereto by welding, brazing or the like. The member 20 is of a substantially oval shape as shown. The flange or side 20 at its lower portion has a headed rivet 23 attached closely adjacent to the front side 20 of said filler member.

An open ring or hoop-like member 24 made from fiat metal stock is shaped in the form shown so as to lie slightly within the inner sides of the holder or receptacle provided by the back 8 and the sides 9 thereof, terminating at its lower end in two downwardly extending spaced apart arms 25, each of which has a hinge member 26 secured thereto to cooperate and join with a companion hinge member 21 secured one at each end of and at the front side of the plate !3 (see Fig. 5) It is apparent that with this construction the member 2 may be turned about a horizontal axis from the position shown in Fig. 4 to a lower substantially horizontal position.

Fingers 28 of metal are welded or otherwise secured on opposite sides of the member 24 and extend outwardly to contact against the bead Hi and limit the inward movement of said member 24. Likewise a finger 29 of metal is fastened to the member 24 at its upper end, to which in turn a hasp 3!! is pivotally connected, being slotted to pass over an eye 3| permanently secured at the upper end of the holder; and a lock shown in Fig. 9 may be passed through the eye 3! to lock the member 24 against movement from its normal operative substantially vertical position shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The member 24, at its upper end portion, also carries a flat segment shaped plate 32 at its rear side permanently secured thereto, having a horizontal lower edge located a short distance below the upper part of member 24.

Within the holder thus described a package of seat covers are designed to be placed. The seat cover package includes a back 33 of paper board or the like, and the seat covers 34 one over the other are placed against this back and all secured together and to the back at their lower ends by fasteners 35 (Fig. 5). The seat covers and the back '33 have central openings 36 to pass over the filler member which extends forward from the central portion of the back 8; and the foremost seat cover is designed to be forced back of the headed rivet 23 so that all of the covers are back thereof and normally will not press forward but are yieldingly held by said rivet head 23.

Each of the seat covers at the upper end of the opening 26 has an integral tab 31 which in practice is folded back against the front side of its cover, and it also has, at its upper edge, an integral flap 38 which is bent downwardly against the front face of the cover and over the tab 31 (see Fig. 4).

With a construction as shown and described, the holder may be supplied with a pad or package of seat covers, the same being entered thereinto by releasing and turning the member 2 -1 forwardly to a substantially horizontal position. After the insertion of the package the member 24 is turned to its upper position, as in Fig. 4, and held or locked therein with the plate 32, at its lower edge, extending to a distance below the upper folds in the seat covers where the tabs 38 are forwardly folded therefrom (Fig. 2).

With the package of seat covers held as described it is not possible to gain access to the outer edges thereof or to the edges where the openings 33 are made therethrough. One cover alone may be pulled down by grasping the tab 38 and pulling forwardly and downwardly thereon. The rivet head at 23 holds the edges of the covers around the openings 36 back of the face 20 of the central filling member, said filling member entering said openings at 36. After a seat cover has been used it may be detached from the pad by tearing the same across on the scored line shown in Fig. 4 directly above the edge of the plate E3. The seat covers at their lower ends are narrowed so as to readily pass by the inner edges of the arms 25 of the holding member 24. The detachable mounting of the holder on the pins 26 permit the holder to be removed at any time for filling or for examination or repair. The construction is of a light form but very strong and durable and of an exceptionally attractive appearance, and with it insurance against waste of the covers is had.

An opening 39 is made in the back 3 to lie directly back of the upper portion of the seat covers permitting the same to be moved forward when the supply on a pad is nearly exhausted, also permitting the removal of the back member 33 of the pad and easy pushing of the same forward for such removal.

The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.

I claim:

1. In combination, a toilet bowl having a horizontal surface, a hinged member therefor including two spaced apart posts each having a shoulder, a mounting plate having spaced apart openings through which said posts extend, said mounting plate being interposed between said shoulders and said horizontal surface, means acting upon the said post to produce clamping pressure between said shoulders and the horizontal surface of said toilet bowl and a dispensing device attached to and extending upwardly from said mounting plate.

2. The elements in combination defined in claim 1, in which said dispensing device has means for detachably connecting the same to said mounting plate, said means including tapered pins and corresponding recesses.
