Description

Patented May 21, 1935 rron'rmo ms 71 Albert Deans: Fairg'rievei Valficouverjflritigh Columbia, Canada" Application October tl, asseuse mm. I
My invention relates to improvements in fighti'ng toys,- the objects of which are to provide means whereby a" match may be played by two figures representing boxers and the count taken I by a referee, as one; of the boxers is knocked out;
to provide means whereby the boxers are largely controlled by the operators of the toy and whereby either of the boxers may be restoredto an upright position subsequent to being knocked partly over in response to manipulation by the operator controlling the boxer who'administered the blow which upset the equilibrium of the one." i
The invention consists of two figures representing boxers, means ior imparting movement to 15? their arms and separate means for moving their legs: and for swinging theirbodies, which latter means is under selective control of the operators,
as will be more fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying 7 e drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a plan view of the toy takenirmnediately below the platform and showing the control rods forthe foot and body movement.
Figure 2 isa sectional view taken on the line ZKZ- ZOfFIgureI. k Figure 3" is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, with the drive means operatively connected. i
Figure '4 is a similar sectional view showing the 30". drive means'disconnected. i i
Figure 5- is a sectional view of one of the boxers as viewed fromthe back. 1 Figure 6 is a sectional view of same asviewed from the side. 1 1 In the drawings" like characters oi reierence indicate correspondingparts in each figure.
The numeral-I indicates generally a casing hav ing side walls 2' one of which carries a coin lock 3 of any suitable type which serves to permit 49; the device to be operated. Upon the casing is a platform 4 forming a ring in which the boxers fight. The platform is provided with pairs-of slots 5 and 6 indicated in dotted line in Figure 1; these slots are reversel-y curvedandthose of each pair are opposed'so that leading from the inner end of each pair towards their outer endsthey converge; then diverge and finally converge again. Standing upon the platform are two figures or boxers! and B'Qbothidenti alin construction; each having legs and feet9 ,abodies l, heads [I and arms l2 fitted inthe usual way'withj boxing gloves Hi. The intersection or joint-oi the legs and bodies consists oftwocams l4 and l which may be slightly concavo convex or fiat'as desired though the former is preferred, different por-i 21:. I The heads it are eachoivota connected t the bodr with a downwa dl ext nding flat stem 2|; and a sprin 2 The stem passes through a reetanxular slot 21 in tl'lelmdy, 0 thehead may not: twist undu y. th u h itmay by virtue gt the sprin tension swing: freely in, any dir mountednon-rotatablybutcentrally low the platform 4 is a vertical .shait .24 up n which is journaled a disc 25, above the disc is a collarand asnring 21. and above the sprin is ave ically slidableplate. 2a. which is h ld d pr ss d when the. device iain play by a i rk 29 whi h i aged. at its: end by a trigger it weig d a itsouter end? as at 3!. The tork 39 is mounted p n-a shaft 32 havingan operatinghan le extending beyond the and walls ofthe casing 35 for manual settinB, this shaft'is provided with a'leverzfl' which isnormally enzae dby a pr j'ection'li of the eoinlook mechani m 3 whi h Prevents the shaft iroin being rocked by th handle at until a coin is inserted, but subse- 40 quently allows the handle to be turned and the fork 29 to be lowered: until engaged by the end or the trigger i0, thusholding the plate 28 in depressed position. Slidably supported above the plate It is a flange 36 which is adiu ly an 4,5 resiliently depressedbelowthenla-ti rm by a spring 31,.this flange is provided on opposite sides with eyes 38. I
Connecting e toes of. each foot of one boxer 8 with the: crotclrof the spring fork [9 controlling the other boxer is a spring wire 39, which passesthrough onerof the eyes 38 and. is surrounded. adjaoentthe toe: connection with a coil spring 40 which issnohored at its lower end to the-wire and is adapted to abut the. underside 56:
of the'platform as the inner end of the wire is drawn upwardly due to the falling of one of the boxers, thus preventing him from falling too heavily on receiving a knock out blow, and to restore him to standing position if he is not knocked over too far. By virtue of spring wire being used for the elements, 39 and also the spring 3'! serving to depress the flange 36, a resilient force is exerted on the toes of each boxer to hold themin standing position. I g
A forked arm 4|, see Figure ,3, is pivotally connected to the underside of the platform 4, which rests its free end upon the flange 36 and is raised or lowered accordingly as the. flange moves. Intermediate the length of this arm a cord 42 extends to the trigger 30, so that when one of the boxers is knocked down a strong upward pull is imposed upon one-end 'of the wiresr 39, thus raising the flange 36 and the forked arm 4|, and through the cord 42 the trigger is swung out of. abutment with the-fork 29, .thus allowing said fork and theplate. 28 to rise to the positionshown inrFigure 4, with the assistance of the then freed spring 21.
Downwardly extendingv .from the platform'4. are two pairs of brackets 43 and in the free end of each a rocking lever 44. is mounted; .Each rocking lever 44 is provided at its outer end with a roller 45 and is connected at its inner :end by a wire 45 which passesupwards through a foot and leg 9 and body In to a cranked shaft 47 upon which an arm I2-is-secured-.=
Supported above the disc 25 upon uprights 48 is a cam ring 49'having upon its underside a M plurality of wedge shaped cams 59 of varying size and inclination, each of which is adapted to progressively engage the rollers-45 of the rocking levers 44 as they pass thereover, thus depressing them and through the slackening of the wires 46 passing upwards through-the feet, legs and bodies which connect with the cranked shafts 4! carrying-the arms 12, lowering said armsand when the tension springs 5| to the rocking levers 44 rapidly reverse their motion as the rollers 45 disengage each cam 50 the wires are tensioned, thus swinging the arms upwards to administer blows upon the opposingboxerp Mounted upon the platform 4 to the side. of the boxers is the figure of a referee. 52 whose arms 53 and. 54 are swingingly mounted on cranked shafts55- and are operated through .wires 56 and 57. Suspended from the wire 56 isan iron plate or armature 58 to which is: attached. also a cord 59 extending upwardlyand through an eye 60, thence downwardly to the plate 28 to which it is secured. The wire 51 extends-downwardly and has suspended from it another: iron plate 6| which is adapted to be engaged at intervals :of rotation of the disc 25 by a plurality of. inverted and inclined horseshoe magnets .62 carried by said 'disc.-- Carried by the disc 25-is another magnet 63- which is set to a .smaller radius than those of. the magnets 62, but at a greater radius than "that of the armature 58 when in its normal position as shown in Figure 3. A wheel 54 mounted upon a shaft .65 forms a driving means for rotating the disc 25, butthis may be substituted by-any manual or motor drive desired.
Following a play inwhich. one of the boxers 8 is knocked out, a: coin is inserted into the lock and the handle 33. turned to swing the fork 29 downwardly and depress thev plate 28 into normal or operating position. with. the. trigger 36 abut: ting the free end of the fork.. The plate 28,prior to depression was in contact with the inner end of the rocking levers 44 raising them to such an extent as to prevent the engagement of the cams 59 with the rollers 45. The knob 26 remote from the fallen boxer is outwardly drawn, thus through the wires 39 pulling him back into standing position and withdrawing the other boxer 7 back from the centre of the platform 4. The disc 25 and its cam ring 49 are set in rotation and by virtue of the plate 28 having. been lowered out of contact with the inner ends of the levers 44 their rollers 45 are set to be engaged by the cams 50, so that as each cam passes a roller the arm connected therewith is swiftly moved in an upward direction to administer a blow to the opponent boxer. Each player, having assumed control of an operating knob 20 moves his fork l9 forwardly or back wardly or from one side to another as he may deem fit to dispose his boxer and the boxers body in position to most effectively fight the opponent boxer. During this playthe magnets 62 in passing in the path of the armature 6| engage it and by so doing exert a pull on the wire 57 and impart an upward movement to the left arm 54 of the referee 52, when the magnet passes beyond the armature of the latter swings free and the tension being removed from the wire 5! the arm 54 drops back to its normal position. When one boxer through manipulation of the corresponding fork l9 and the blow struck by the cam and rocking lever movement knocks his opponent over, the upward pull on the wires 39 due to the toes being raised from the platform 4 compresses the spring 37 and raises the flange 36 and with it the arm 4! this arm, through the cord 42 pulls the trigger 39 free from abutment with the fork 29 and permits the plate 28 to rise into contact with the inner ends of the levers 44, thus preventing them from operating and consequently leaving both boxers at rest. The raising of the plate 28 permits the endwise movement of the cord 59, so that the armature 58 swings outwardly into the path of the magnet 63 to be engaged thereby on each rotation of the disc. Each time that this armature is caught by the. magnet 63, the arm 53 is raised, thus simulating the counting out of the fallen boxer by the referee.
