IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,176, dated February 12, 1878 application filed December 17, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, 'OHARLEs W. COLONY, of Sandy Creek, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lantern, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved lantern, partly in section and Fig. 2, a detail vertical transverse section of the same on line m 00, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The invention relates to the class of lanterns in which the globe is attached to the top and bottom disks, and combined with means for raising and lowering the same.

The invention consists in the combination of a notched bail for raising the globe and retaining it in a raised position, and a spiral spring for forcing the globe downward when the bail is unlocked, with the top and bottom disks, forming the globe-support, and slotted guides of the lantern-frame for holding the bail.

Referring to the drawing, A represents a tubular lantern or lamp, of the usual construction, and B the globe of the same, which is supported between the rim C of the top plate 1 or cap C and a bottom plate or base, D, and

firmly held in position on the burner of the lamp by a strong spiral spring, C that is placed around the central tube, and presses on the top plate- C.

The globe B is readily raised for the purpose of filling, trimming, lighting, or extinguishing the lantern by means of a top bail, E, that is attached at diametrically-opposite points to the cap C, and extended over the conducting-tube of the lamp, being made of ring shape at the top part. This bail E is notched at the sides, or provided with projecting teeth, or other equivalent locking means, so that the globe may be sustained in raised position by lifting the bail, and allowing then the notched sides of the bail to catch on the slotted guides a of the center tube. The lamp may then be attended to without handling the globe at all.

The globe B is secured either to both the cap or base by two or more connecting-bars, that bind near the circumferential flanges of rim C? and base D; or cap and base may be attached by one or more clamp-springs to the globe; or other equivalent fastening devices may be used, so that either the cap and globe, or cap, globe, and base, may be raised and lowered together, as desired. The latter mode is preferable, as thereby the lantern is more conveniently handled and attended to without the necessity of handling the globe.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination,in a lantern, of the looped and notched bail E and the spiral spring C with the globe-holder C, C, and D, the globe B, and the lantern-frame, having a top guidetnbe and the slotted guides a for the bail, all constructed and relatively arranged, as shown, to operate in the manner set forth.
