This invention relates to a water lock boiler feed system.
The principal object of this device is to provide an improved means whereby water is supplied to steam boilers.
A further object is to conserve the use of fuel in maintaining steam in boilers, and also in producing a device which will be relatively simple in operation and inexpensive as it eliminates labor ordinarily employed in the care of steam boilers.
A further object of the invention is to eliminate the necessity of using pumps and injectors.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for prolonging the life of the boiler by introducing pre-heated water into the same, thereby lessening the contractions and expansions due to sudden changes in temperature within the boiler by the introduction of cold water.
A further object of the device is to provide a chamber for the reception of water to be preheated and, if desired, treated before being released into the steam boiler.
A still further object is to provide a water lock boiler fed system that may be utilized in supplying water to a battery of steam boilers if so desired.
It is understood that the device will work as well in supplying water to any desired number of boilers as to a single boiler.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it
" being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
The figure is a front elevation of the device partly in cross section.
By referring to thedrawing it will be seen that there has been provided a tank I having an interior chamber 3. The upper portion of this tank I is fitted with a steam tight cover 2 and is provided with an intake water pipe 4. This intake water pipe 4 is provided with a check valve 5 and a control valve 6. In order to show a construction and operation of the device there is provided a support member I upon which the tank I rests. It will be seen that the tank I, which comprises the water lock boiler feed, is positioned above a water line 8 in a steam boiler 9, this water line 8 being visible through a water gauge l0.
The tank I is provided with an inlet pipe H which is attached to the steam boiler 9 at a point I2. It will be seen that the inlet pipe II is provided with a valve i3. This inlet pipe II has installed thereon a T M- whichprovides for the con- 5 nection of a steam line i 5 which enters the tank I at a point l6 which is normally below the water line of the tank i This steam line It is provided with a suitable coil section i! within the interior chamber 3 of the tank I. The lower por- 10 tion ofthe steam line l5 connects to a T I 8. This T also carries an outlet pipe l9 provided with a check valve 20 and a control valve 2 i. It will also be seen that this T l8 has a downwardly extending steam boiler intake pipe 22, the lower end of which leads into the boiler 9 at a point 23 which is below'the water line of the steam boiler 9. It will be seen that this downwardly extending steam boiler intake pipe 22 is provided with a control valve 24 and a check valve 25. It will also be seen that this steam tight cover 2 is provided with a vent 26.
In the operation of the device it will be seen that the tank 1 is filled with water either to capacity or to a water line indicated by a gauge 25 21 if so desired. In order to provide means for pre-heating the water in the interior chamber 3 there is provided a valve 28 on the steam line l5, which when open, allows steam to travel through the steam line l5 into the coil portion 30 I1. As the water has reached the desired temperature the same may be allowed to flow from the interior chamber 3 of the tank I by opening a control valve 2!, after which the water passes through the T l8 and down the downwardly extending steam boiler intake pipe 22. It will be seen that this downwardly extending steam boiler intake pipe 22 is provided with a control valve 24 and a check Valve 25. This check valve 25 is to prevent an outward flow of water from the 40 steam boiler 9.
It is obvious that the steam traveling through the inlet pipe ll will cause a head of steam in the interior chamber 3 which will be exactly equal to the pressure of the steam within the steam boiler 9. It is now obvious that as the tank I is positioned above the water line of the steamboiler 9 and with equal temperatures in the interior chamber 3 of the tank I and in the steam boiler '9, the water will be caused to flow into the steam boiler 9, which is the desired object of this device. 7
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described comprising a tank positioned above a water line of a steam boiler, a valve controlled water inlet pipe for said tank, steam line connections between said steam boiler and said tank, an outlet means for allowing water within said tank to flow downwardly by gravity and enter said steam boiler, a steam line leading from said steam boiler to said tank and provided with a coil within said tank and extending out of said tank and connected to said outlet means leading to said steam boiler.
2. In a device of the class described comprising a tank positioned above a water line of a steam boiler, a valve controlled water inlet pipe for said tank, steam line connections between said steam boiler and said tank, a valve control for said steam line, an outlet means for 'allowing water within said tank to flow downwardly by gravity and enter said steam boiler, a second steam line with one end connected to an upper portion of said steam boiler and entering said tank and provided with a coil Within said tank and continuing out of said tank and connecting to said outlet means. i
3. In a device of the class described compris ing a tank positioned above a water line of a steam boiler, a valve controlled water inlet pipe for said tank, steam line connections between said steam boiler and said tank, an outlet means for allowing water within said tankto flow downwardly by gravity due tothe energy of position of the water within the elevated tank and enter said boiler, a steam coil positioned within said tank having one end connected to said boiler at an upper portion of the same and the other end connected to said outlet means for the purpose of pre-heating water within said tank.
