Description

May 14, 1935- G. E. SLAUGENHOP COMBINED ROD GUIDE, ROD CHECK, AND PARAFFIN SWAB Filed Aug. 27, 1954 IN! ENTOR. George EJ/au enho A TTORNEY.
Patented May 14, 1935 UNITED STATES COMBINED BOD GUIDE, ROD CHECK, AND
PABAFFIN SWAB George E. Slaugenliop, Vernon, Tex. Application August 27, 1934, Serial No. 741,711
7 Claims.
This invention provides an oil well accessory for minimizing friction between the pump rod and easing, removing parafiln and sludge, and preventing injury to the rod when accidentally dropped, said accessory being mountable on a pump rod and insertable in, removable from, and adjustable in the .well to therequired position.
The device consists of a shank having upper and lower valve stops, a tubular borhr on the shank between the valve stops and closable at its ends by said valve stops, a swab carried by the tubular body, and a friction holder, preferably spring elements, attached to the tubular body to retain it in the well in the desired adjusted position.
While the drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied and changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawing hereto attached in which: I
Figure 1 is anelevational sectional view of an embodiment of the invention, the shank being shown in full lines and its lower portion omitted.
Figure 2 isa view similar to Figure 1, of the. lower portion of the shank, the well casing being shown by dotted lines in both Figures 1 and 2,
Figure 3 is a side view of the device, the upper portion of the shank being broken away and the lower portion omitted.
Figure 4 is a plan section on the line 4-40:
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the] several views of the drawing by like reference;'' characters. i
The shank 8 is designed to form a part of the pump rod and its ends 8 and 28 are formed to receive the ends of the pump rod. to be'coupled thereto. The upper end 8 is threaded and receives a member I which is faced to provide a valve la. An element I8 is provided near the lower end of 'the shank 8 and is faced to form a valve II. The end 28 consists of a threaded socket and the part It between the elements l8 and 28 is adapted to receive a wrench to facilitate the coupling and uncoupling of the parts in a manner well understood. The shank 8 is of a length to admit of its functioning as a part of the pump rod without disturbing the parts thereon after the device has been adjusted within the well casing to the desired'point.
The part i2 is a tubular body and is mounted on the shank 8 between the elements I and I8 and constitutes a guide to prevent contact of 5 the shank and pump rod with the sides of the well tube or casing 5. A valve seat 8 is formed at the upper end of the body I2 and coacts with the valve la. A corresponding valve seat It is provided at the lower end of the body to coact 10 with the valve H. The body I2 has a loose fit on the shank 8 to admit of oil flowing freely therebetween. Openings II are formed in thesides of the body l2 near the valve seat 9 to provide an outlet for oil and other substances flowing 15 through the body when its upper end is closed bythe valve la resting on the seat 8.
The swab l3 consists of a body mounted on the guide i2 and carried thereby. It'tapers upwardly and is formed from sheet metal. per end fits snugly within the casing 5 to scrape parafiin and sludge from the sides thereof when the device is moved upward. The upper edge of the body I3 is serrated and deflected inwardly to form elements III which prevent hangingwhen 25 the device is drawn upwardly.
Springs ll are grouped about the body I! and attached at their lower ends thereto. The upper ends of the springs it pass loosely through openings 2| formed in the sides of the body l3 near its 30 upper end. The springs engage the inner wall of the well casing 8 and frictionally hold the device at the desired adjusted position.
7 In practice, one or more guides are located in the length of the pump rod, depending upon the as depth of the well, and are properly positioned within the well by the lowering of the pump rod therein. The valve stops I and I8 are spaced apart a distance to admit of the pump rod working freely without contact of either of the stops 40 with the guide l2. As the guide descends, theliquid therebelow 'flows upwardly therethrough. The guide is pressed downwardly by contact of the valve stop I with the upper end thereof. As the upper end of the guide is. closed by the valve la, the iiquid escapes through the openings ll.
Should the pump rod drop, its rapid descent is checked by the retarded upflow of the liquidthrough the restricted outlets ll, thereby preventing injury or damage. When drawing the pump rod upwardly, the lower end of the guide I2 is closed bythe valve stop i8 and the swab I3 is carried upwardly with the guide and removes 1 paraiiln and sludge in a manner readily understood. The guide is positioned within the well by The lip-'20- adjusting the pump rod up or down and remains tact of the pump rod with the casing 5 is prevented by the guide l2, thereby obviating the wear incident to contact of the pump rod with the casing.
The part 5 designates the tube which is located in the outer casing and in which operates the plunger and rod. The guide is locatedin the tube 5 and prevents wear and injury thereto when pumping.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A pump rod, upper and lower valve stops thereon, a tubular guide mounted loosely on the rod between the stops and closable thereby, a swab on the guide, and friction holding means carried by the guide and engageable with the well tube to retain the guide and swab in desired position.
2. A pump rod provided with upper and lower valve stops, a tubular guide mounted loosely on the rod between the stops, a swab encircling the guide, and springs exterior to the swab and carriedby the guide and engageable with the well tube to hold the guide and swab in an adjusted position.
3. A pump rod provided with upper and lower valve stops, a tubular guide mounted loosely on the rod between the stops, a hollow tapering swab on the guide, and springs grouped about the swab and adapted to engage the well tube and hold the guide in adjusted position.
the swab and carried by the guide to frictionally engage the well tube.
5. A combined rod check, rod guide and swab comprising a shank, upper and lower valve stops thereon, a guide mounted loosely on the shank between the stops, a hollow tapering swab mounted upon the guide, and provided at its upper end with inwardly deflected projections, and fiat springs grouped about the swab and carried by the guide.
6. A combined rod check, rod guide and swab comprising a shank, upper and lower valve stops thereon, a guide mounted loosely on the shank between the stops and having openings in its sides, a hollow tapering swab mounted upon the guide, and flat springs grouped about the swab and carried by the guide.
7. A combined rod check, rod guide and swab comprising a shank provided with coupling ends, valve stops adjacent the coupling ends, a tubular guide on the shank and having openings in its sides, a. hollow tapering body on the guide having inwardly deflected serrations at its upper end, and fiat springs grouped about the body and carried by the guide to frictionally engage the well tube for holding the guide and swab in desired adjusted position.
