Patented PATENT OFFICE BRACELET BUCHE .man sand, Newark, N. s., or to Gomez Compalw, a corporation of New Jersey .Application August 24, i933, sensi No. csasss v (ci. ca -71) Ihis invention relates to a bracelet buckle;
and has i'or one oi its objects the provision of a buckle which may be contracted when the device is in folded position on the wrist of the wearer.
Another object of the invention is the prcviwill nest one within the other so as to enable the buckle to iold into a more compact space Another object of the invention is the provision of a construction of an elastically extensible device in which thev housing for the spring which aords the elasticity may be completed after assembly oi' the parts.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a construction of elastically extensiblebracelet in which the sliding parts may be secured and the spring housed in position without the use of solder for formulating the construction, the same being held in position by a folding or deiiecting of the stock of the parts.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists oi certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. l is` a top plan view of the buckle shown in partly contracted position with Vthe links of the bracelet chain connected thereto.
Fig. 2 is a construction showing the sections in unfolded position and illustrating in dotted lines the spring which acts between the two sliding parte in one end section.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the opposite side of the sections.
Fig. 4 is a central sectional view of the sections in folded position.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. illustrating the elastically urged part as being withdrawn from contracted position.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Figs. 4 and 5 showing the sections in their initial positions of unfolding and the disengagement of the ratchet teeth and the catch which engages therewith on the slidable part in one end section.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line i-fi of Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the parts ofthe elasticalh1 extensible end section.
Fg.f9 is a perspective view of the cover element which cooperates with the structure shown in Fig. 8.
Fig. 10 is a perspective view with one of the side Walls broken away, illustrating the elastically ex.- tensible section in contracted position and -with the parts of Figs. 8 and 9 assembled.
In the use of bracelets, particularly for wrist watches and the like, it is desirable to provide socalled buckles consisting of a plurality of foldable sections which may be unfolded and disposed end to end, to enlarge Vthe encircling length of the bracelet and in such a construction it is desirable to provide sliding parts for one of the sections, which parts may be slid inwardly and caught in different ratchet teeth to hold the sliding parts in j contracted position against extending, whereby the buckle may be diminished in its encircling length after folded upon the Wrist, and it is also desirable to provide an elastically extensible bracelet which I provide by utilizing an elasticaliy'extensible section in the buckle which may be extended either when the buckle is unfolded or folded, to at either of these times permit of elastic extension and thus when folded to snugly grip the wrist and retain the bracelet in the position along the arm which itis desired the same will assume; and I have so arranged the elastically extensible section that the housing for the elastically extensible parts shall t between the ratchet racks to aord a more compact relation of the sections when in folded position; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment or thisl invention illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:-
With reference to the drawing, I have disclosed a buckle consisting of one end section ii another end section I2, and an intermediate section i3 joining these two end sections and pivoted as at i@ and i5 to these end sections to permit them to swing one upon the other into substantially overlying relation and there be retained by a suitable holding device, which will later be more fully described.
The end section i l consists of two slidable parts, one part comprising atop plate i@ having sides il with inwardly-turned ,i1=.. es i8 spaced from the top plate I Ii, while the other part consists of a slide member I9 guided between the sides I1 and the inturned flanges I8 and the top wall I6, and is provided with a cross bar at its outer end to which one end of a chain 21| may be attached by a connecting link 22, and a cross bar 23 extending between the sides of the slide I9, which bar is provided with a ange 24 for engagement with the teeth of the two spaced racks to hold the slide in dii'erently adjusted positions. 4
The intermediate section I3 has flanges 25 along either side, which are cut to form a series of teeth 26 to be engaged by the catch 24 of the slide I9 to hold the slide in differently adjusted positions when lthe sections are folded one over the other. These teeth are completely withdrawn lfrom engagement with the catch 24 when the sections are unfolded or partially withdrawn from lcomplete folded position, thus permitting free sliding of the slide member I9 when such unfolding occurs.
. the spring 31.
-tion by a tongue 44 on the end of the bottom The end section I2 also consists of two sliding parts, one part having a bottomwall 21 with sides 28 with this bottom wall cut out in its center 29 and v'provided with anges 30 turned up along the sides of the cutout portion, as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 8. The other part of the 'section I2 consists of a bottom wall 3l having side4 walls 32y with the edges of these side walls rolled inwardly over the side walls 28, as shown at 33, see Fig. 10, so as to provide a guiding means to' permit longitudinal extension and sliding of these parts one on the other. The side wall 32 is provided with anear 34 having an opening 35 thru which-the pivot pin I5 extends for hinging this part to the intermediate section I3. The bottom wall 3i is provided with a depressed trough 36 extending longitudinally centrally thereof, which registers with the cut-out portion 29 ot the wall 21 when these two parts are in contracted or overlying position.
In assembling the section I2, the bottom walls 21 and 3l of the two parts are slid one into the other, the side walls 28 being guided in the rolled edges 33 anda spring 31 is then placed in position with one end against the abutment 38 turned upwardly from the bottom of the trough 36 and extending into the cut-out portion 29 of this part. The spring is then contracted and a cover 39 is positioned with the laterally-extending edges 40 of its enlarged oiset head 4I positioned in the notches 42 at the end of the anges 33. This cover then extends between and along the top edges oi the anges 3|!A over lthe spring while its'end 43 extends downwardly into the trough 36 to form an abutment tor-the opposite end of This cover 39 is locked in posiwall 21 which is rolled into theslot 45 in the cover, as illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 10. Thus this cover is securelyheldin position without the use of solder. i.
The opposite end link 43 o! the bracelet chain is secured to the'rolled ,eye 41 on the bottom wall 21 of one part of the section I2, which permits this Dart `to extendwith relation 'to the intermediate section I3 and compress the` spring as a pull is exerted to overcome the tension 'of the: spring and which, upon release, will permit the spring to draw these sliding parts toV a contracted position. l The housing of the spring necessitates the raising of the ilanges 30 and the use ot cover 33 to form a trough which will occupy space in the thickness of the assembled folded construction.
and in order that there may be a compact arrangement with all of the construction and mechanism herein shown, I have cut out the insire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
