ELECTRIC STARTING MOTOR Filed July 7, 1933 Patented May 14, 1935 j I 2,001,178 I smc'rnr c sraa'mrc Moron. Jakob B01111, Solothurn, Switzerland July 7. 1933, Serial No...679.386, I InGermeny July 14,198 v Z'Chhns. (Cl. 290-48) This invention relates tqa certainsystem of has f llyengaged the ring of teeththe switch h electric startingv motor therotor Ihait 01 which is in the closed position. This switch operatesa 18 up d by means of an overrunning clutch to relay ipmvided for the maincoil switchl and the the pinion shaft which engages a ring 01' teeth field coilswitch n, This relay consists of the elecs M un ed, on the gin flywheel. For the startism-magnetic coil k, and the mainswit pr p 5 ing operation a special field coil is first switched lfor the startarwhich is fixed to the switch shaft in in series to the rotor causing a rotation of the m onwhich the commutator n for h sp c rotor opposite tothe working direction, the pinion field coil). is ar anged also. 0 represents a known is brought electromagnetically into engagement blade-type switch with three positions. The bat T gum-m srATEs PATEN v I 1 with the ring of teeth on the flywheel, and after tery 12 supplies current to the starter and the the pinion has been moved into full engagement, starter relay. In the nought position of the the main field coil is switched in and the current switch 0 all the circuits are switched out. In the in the special field coil is changed so that the effirst switching position the special field coil f is fect of the latter isadded to the one of the main switched in series to the rotor so that the latter 15 field coil. Starting motors of the usual design is turned in the opposite sense with respect to the 15 without special field coll have the disadvantage working direction of rotation. In the second that if the teeth of the pinion strike against the switching position of the switch 0 current is also teeth of the flywheel when moving into engagesupplied to the coil g. Now the pinion shaft is ment, the pinion is rotated with respect to the displaced and the pinion brought into engageflywheel teeth under the full momentum of the ment. After the latter has fully engaged the 20 armature mass the result being rapid wear of the switch h is closed also. The result of this is that teeth of the fiywheel and of the pinion. under the influence of the electro-magnetic coil It has now been proposed in the Patent No. It the main switch is closed and at the same time 1,910,588 to use a special field coll together with the special field coil switched over i. e. parallel an overrunning clutch; this special field coil to the rotor. The rotor rotates now in the work- 25 causes a rotation of the rotor opposite to the working direction of rotation and the starter works as ing direction of rotation when moving the pinion a compound motor. After the internal combuslnto engagement thereby preventing the momention engine has started on its own power the tum of the armature from having a. damaging blade-type switch is released. It returns to the w eflect ii the teeth of the pinion strike against the first switching position i. e. the coil 9 is switched teeth of the flywheel as the pinion shaft is turned out again and the pinion disengages the ring of only by the friction of the rotating overruning teeth, the switch h is opened also by this displaceclutch. I ment of the pinion shaft. In consequence of this According to the invention the connection for the main current switch is again opened and the this system is made in such a way that in the special field coil switched over whereby the rotor first switch step of a known blade-type switch is retarded and quickly brought to a stand-still. the special field coil'is switched in a sense oppo- In the nought position of the switch 0 the relay site to the working direction of rotation, whilst for the special field coil is now again switched out. in the second switch step the pinion is displaced By means of the blade-type switch a relay for 0 electro-magnetically into the, ring of teeth and heating up the incandescent plugs which are used 40 by this movement after complete engagement anfor Diesel engines, may be operated in such a way other switch is closed operating a relay by means that in the first and second switching position of which the main switch is closed and at the current is supplied to a relay which closes the same time the switch for the special field coil is circuit for said incandescent plugs. This relay operated in such a way that the direction of the consists of the electro-magnetic coil r and the current in the latter is reversed whereby the efswitch proper q. s represents the incandescent fect of same is added to the one of the main field plugs, t the control lamp and u the battery used coll. for these incandescent plugs.
0n the drawing an example of the invention is What I claim is: shown in a wiring diagram. 1. In an electric starting motor system for ina is the engine ring of teeth on the flywheel, b ternal combustion engines, in combination arotor, is the starting motor, 0 the pinion shaft and d a field coil, a special field coil, a pinion, a pinion the pinion, e the main field coil and f the special shaft, an overrunning clutch, said pinion coupled field coil. The pinion shaft 0 is displaced axially to the pinion shaft by means of said overrunning y th -m gn tic coil 9. After the pinion clutch, an engine flywheel, aring of teeth mounted 5 on the latter, an electro magnet for operating said pinion shaft, a switch operated by said pinion shaft in such a way that after full engagement of the pinion in the ring of teeth on the flywheel said switch is closed, a main current switch, a switch for the special field coil fixed to the latter, an electro magnet for operating the two latter switches, a battery for the starter, a three-position blade-type switch adapted to switch out all circuits in the nought position and to switch in the first switching position the special field coil into the circuit so that the rotor rotates opposite to the working direction of rotation and adapted to operate in the second switching position said first mentioned electro magnet which displaces the pinion into engagement and closes said first mentioned switch which renders operative the main and the special field coil switches in such away that the main circuit is closed and the current in the special field coil is changed so that the effect of the latter field is added to the one of the main field coil.
2. In an electric starting motor system for internal combustion engines, in combination a rotor, a field coil, a special field coil, a pinion, a pinion shaft, an overrunning clutch, said pinion coupled to the pinion shaft by means of said overrunning clutch, an engine flywheel, a ring of teeth mounted on the latter, an electro magnet for operating said pinion shaft, a switch operated by said pinion shaft in such a way that after full engagement of the pinion in the ring of teeth on the flywheel said switch is closed, a main current switch, a switch for the special field coil fixed to the latter, an electro magnet for operating the two latter switches, a battery for the starter, a three-position blade-type switch adapted to switch out all circuits in the nought position, to switch in the first switching position the special field coil into the circuit so that the rotor rotates opposite to the working direction of rotation and adapted to operate in the second switching position said first mentioned electro magnet which displaces the pinion into engagement and closes said last mentioned switch which renders operative the main and the special field coil switches in such a way that the main circuit is closed and the current in the special field coil is changed so that the effect of the latter field is added to the one of the main field coil, a relay, incandescent plugs, a battery, said relay adapted to work in the first and second switching positions of said blade-type switch and to operate the heating-up of the incandescent plugs by switching in said battery.
