Description

Patented May 7, 1935 Michael J. McHale, Scrantorula.
Application July 20, 1934, Serial No. 736,247
9 Claims.
My invention relates to thread guides for winding machines and. more particularly tomeans for mounting and attaching a guide eye to its support.
i In application, Serial No. 708,480, filed January 26, 1934;now Patent 1,965,044, issued July 3, 1934,
I have disclosed athread guide fastening means in combination with a faller arm structure, wherein the guide may be easily and quickly replaced without the use of any special tool. The present invention is an improvement over the arrangement disclosed in the above referred to application and relates to a thread guide fastening device of general application with winding machines and various attachments used therewith.
An object of my invention is to provide a fastening means for thread guides whereby the guide. eye may be readily attached or detached from its support arm or bracket.
Another object of my. invention is to provide an improved locking-means for the guide fastening device whereby the guide is held in tight engagement with its support. I I
Still another object of my invention is to provide an improved thread guide eye adapted to be used in combination with-various types of winding machine structures and attachments used therewith. I
With these and other objects in view, which may be incident to my improvements, the inven- 7 tion consists in the parts and combinations to be hereinafter set forth and claimed, with the understanding that the several necessary elements, comprising my invention, may be varied in construction, proportions and arrangement, without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
In order to make my invention -more clearly understood, I have shownin the accompanying drawing means for carrying the same into practical eiiect, without limiting the improvements in their useful applications to the particular constructions; which for the purpose of explanation, have been made the subject of illustration.
in the drawing: I

Referring to the drawing and more particularmodithread cleaner comprising a body portion I having arms 2, 2' extending outwardly therefrom and r a conventional blade support member, through which the thread 3' passes. Each arm is provided with a thread guide support member 4 adapted to'thread into the arm and heldin position on the arm by means of suitable lock nuts 5. The support member is threaded as at 6 and is further providedwith a head I having an opening 8 formed therein. Attached to the end 9 of the support member is a thread guide designated generally by numeral Ill, formed with a longitudinal recess II, a recess l'zextending perpendicular to the longitudinal recess and a groove I3 at the rear thereof, parallel to opening I2. 7
In order to maintain the thread guide II! in fixed position on the support member 4, there is provided a looped member I4 having one end I5 threaded through the opening 8 formed in the head I of the support member, the other end I6 of said looped member seating in recess I2 formed in the body of the guide. The loop member may be in the form of wire and it is bent as at I! to provide a spring action when the endsof the wire are inserted in the respective openings. v It will be noted that portion I8 of the wire seats in the groove I3 formed at the rear ofthe thread guide, the purpose of this arrangement being to prevent lateral movement of the guide withrespect to its support. e V v In mounting the-guide, loop member I4 'is-rotated away from the end of the support member so that the thread guide will clear the end of ly to Figures 1 and 2 thereof, there is shown a the wire when the recess portion II receives the end 9 of the support. After the guide'is placed in position on the end of the support, end'IB of the wire is inserted into recess I2 formed in the body of the guide, portion I8 of the wire seating in the groove I3 formed at the end of the guide. Referring to Figures 3 and 4, there is shown a modification of the invention adapted to be used for mounting and supporting a thread guide on the frame or other parts of a winding machine.
In this arrangement, the support comprises a threaded member which may be in the form of a wood screw l9 having a flat substantially rectangular shaped head 20 having an opening 20' formed therein. Thread guide I0 is provided with an opening 2| adapted to receive one end 22 of the loop member used in fastening the guide to the support. The guide is also provided with a longitudinal recess 23 in which the head 20 of the support I 9 seats, and a groove 24 which forms a seat for the straight portion 25 of the loop member when the guide is attached to the support.
Referring to Figures 5 and 6, there is shown a further modification of the arran ement disclosed in Figure 3, wherein the support member isv in the form of a machined screw. The purpose of this arrangement is to enable the support to be readily attached to metallicportions of a winding machine, the support being held in po- Sition .on the machine :by means of suitable lock nuts. The thread guide and locking means for the guide together with the head portion of the support member are similar to the structure disclosed in Figure 3.
Referring to Figure 7, I have shown another modified form of the improved thread guide support and locking means therefor, comprising a bolt 26 having a head 2! formed with a slot .28. The bolt is provided with .a longitudinal recess .29 adapted to receive the end 30 of the looped member 3|. In .this arrangement, the thread guide In is held in position on the end .of the bolt by means of looped member 3.], one end 32 .of which passes through opening- 33 formed in the body of the guide, the other end of the looped member being bent around so that a portion 34 seats in the slot 28, the end 30 resting in the recess 29 formed in the .body of the bolt.
Referring to Figures 8 and 9, there :is shown a .further modification of the thread guide mounting comprising a .bolt .35 formed with a shouldered portion 36 and a flat projection 31. The thread guide is held in position on the bolt by means of a spring clip member provided with arms 38, .38. ,As more clearly shown in Figure 8, the clip member is provided with an intermediate portion .38 having an opening 40 adapted to receive the end of the bolt. In the arrangement shown in Fig. .9, the guide is formed with a longitudinal recess to accommodate projection 31, and is held in the operative position on the bolt by means .of the clip, arms 38, 38' .of which engage with the body of the guide.
Referring to Figure 1.0, I have shown a modification oi the arrangement shown in Figure .8, wherein the clip. is held in position .on the bolt by means .of ajam-nut M. In this form of the .device the thread guide seatson the head portion 42 .of the bolt, the body of the guide being sesurely clamped between the arms of the clip.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth, by way .of illustrations, as it is apparent that many changes and variations may be made therein, by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or exceeding thescope of the appended claims.
