Description
Patented May 7, 1935 PATENT OFFICE PORTABLE BEOEPTACLE Morris Solomon, Brooklyn, N. Y minor to Filso Leather Products 00., Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application February 25, 1935, Serial No. 7,951
15 Claims. (01. res-19) This invention relates to portable receptacles and has particular reference to devices such as toilet kits.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described having improved means of a particularly simple type for mounting articles therein. a
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the nature set forth having article holding means arranged and constructed so as to releasably hold articles in different positions in the open condition of the device.
Another object of the invention is to furnish a device of the class alluded to having article holding or display means arranged in an improved manner to function as a part of the wall structure of the kit, or tofacilitate assembling of parts of the latter or for both purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the type mentioned having relatively few and simple parts, and which is inexpensive to manufacture and assemble, neat and compact in appearance, and easy and convenient in use, and durable and eflicient to a high degree.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds.
With the aforesaid objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combinations and arrangements of partshereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawing, wherein like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the" several views.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an outside view in end elevation showing in closed position a device embodying the invention. t Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof in open posiion.
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the article holding means in a different position.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 2. v
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 7, showing the securement of the ends of the flexible marginal lined are best realized when all of its features and instmmentalities are combined in one and the same structure, but, useful devices may be produced embodying less than the whole.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, that the same may be incorporated in several diflerent constructions. The acompanying drawing, therefore, is submitted merely as showing the preferred exempliflcation of the invention.
Referring in detail to the drawing, l0 denotes a device embodying the invention. The same may include a container having a plurality of side walls II, I! and an elongated edge or bottom wall I! to which the side walls are swingably or hingedly connected along parallel lines at ll, i5. Mounted on or superimposed over the edge wall It is an article holding means ii, for articlessuch as bottles il shown in dot dash lines. Connected to the edges of the side walls ii, i! is a closure means which may include the flexible marginal portions ll adapted to be continuously interconnected by a slide fastener I! having a slide 2.. The arrangement is such that in the closed position of the kit, the side walls ll, i2 extend upward in spaced parallel relation with each other with the flexible marginal portions I. being in continuous edge to edge abutment along a central vertical plane and being continuously interconnected by the slide fastener l9, so as to retain and house the article holding means It therein in an upright position. when the slide fastener is opened, the side walls I] and ii are downwardly swung in opposite directions to lie in the horizontal plane of the bottom or edge wall ii in which manner the device may uniformly rest upon a table or the like with the article holding means It disposed upright.
The side and edge-walls ii, I! and i3 may'inelude sheets of stiffening material 2| 22 and a continuous external flexible covering 23 therefor. An intermediate layer or lining of the flexible fabric 2311 may serve to interconnect the sheets of reenforcement 2|, 2! and form a base for the covering 28. An internal lining for said sheets may include flexible sheets 24 and 25, of which the former may form a part of the walls II and I3, and the latter a part of the wall II. The different sheets, coverings and linings may be secured together in any suitable manner as by ad hesive or by stitching disposed wherever necessary, and in the case of adhesive, preferably throughout the contacting surfaces except as otherwise described The lining portion 24 may include an upstanding folded portion 28 having a top fold line 21 and providing layers or plies 28, 29 disposed side by side. The wall structure 26 may consist of reenforced or stiffened material and is joined to the main part of the section 14 by a fold or hinge line 30 which coincides with the line of separation between the reenforcing sheets 2| and 22 that defines the hinge line l4. The wall portion 29 is joined to a semipliable or slightly reenforced section 3| of the lining 24 by a fold line 32 adjacent to that at 30. A line of stitching 33 may secure the edge of the section 3| with the adjacent edges of the lining 25 and of the reenforcement 22 in relative proximity to the line of separation between the sheets 2| and 22 and the hinge line I5, but inward of the latter as shown, so that the wall structure 26, 32 is secured to the edge wall l3 against movement relative thereto.
Connected to the wall 29 is a one piece band or ribbon affording loops 34 by spaced lines of securement at 35 that may be efl'ected by stitching or the like.
The flexible marginal portions l9 may be connected to the side wall reenforcement sheets 2| by lines of stitching 36. These as well as the stitching 33 pass through the fabric layer 23a. The end portions 31 may be fastened direct to the edge wall l3 or the reenforcement 22 thereof as by stapling at 38. This operation can be readily effected by expanding the wall structure 25, 3|, including unfolding the former, to provide a downward opening box B, which with the element 22 provides a tube of relatively large cross section, permitting access for the stapling operation. Hence this operation can be eifected after the toilet kit is substantially assembled, and without distorting any stiff wall parts of the device. Finally the outer covering 23 may be applied adhesively in a well known manner.
It will be understood that the reenforcement sections 2|, 22 can be regarded as parts of a single sheet of stifi material formed with score or fold lines at the hinges l4, l5, and also that the sections 2|, 22 may be directly hingedly interconnected by flexible strips or the like.
The box structure B may now be collapsed by folding the wall downward, to assume the L shape formation shown, with the folded wall 26 forming the upright arm and the wall 3| the horizontal arm or portion. The article holding means l9 thus provided is now in position to receive articles such as the bottles H. To maintain the article holding means in this position, means are provided adapted for engagement with the closure means or the marginal portions thereof.
' More particularly, and in order to suitably clear the V-shape formations provided by the inward folds 39 of the marginal portions, the wall portions 28, 29 and 3| are less in length than the main section 24 of which they form a part, being undercut therefrom at 40. Between the wall por tions 23, 29 are provided V notches 4| at opposide ends, and the wall 3| has V notches at opposite ends thereof. Each notch 4| is substantially twice the width of a notch 42. All of the notches open inward, and the notches 42 are adapted to interfit with the V formations 39 and with the points of the notches 42 extending into the folds 39. When the walls 28, 29 are folded upon each other, adjacent edges of each notch 4| coincide, and there results strong angular shaped corner portions at 43 which are adapted to underlie flexible marginal portions IS in proximity to the adjacent fold lines 39, so that the flexible marginal portions in the open position of the toilet kit serve to retain the article holding means in operative position. The points 44.
ing placed rather upon the line of stitching 33.
It will now be seen that the notches 42 provide a pattern or form which definitely fixes the 10- cations of the fold lines 39 and serves to tension the flexible marginal portions 3 when the device In is opened up, so as to resist reverse or downward folding of the side walls l2. Such increase in tension of the flexible marginal portions I8 causes those of them at the wall I2 to bear down strongly on the anchor points 43 to securely maintain the article holding means I 6 in operative position without being otherwise fastened down. Auxiliary securing means or adhesive may be utilized but can for this purpose be regarded as unnecessary. It is thus seen that I have provided a new and improved construction as well as a new method of making a device of the character described.
A feature of the invention is the provision of article holding elements 34 together with an alining means 26 for maintaining the articles I! in superposed position to the edge or bottom wall I3. In no sense need the alining means carry the articles I1. Since the holders34 are arranged vertically in the sense that they open upward and downward, the articles I! may be downwardly inserted thereinto until they rest directly upon the bottom or edge wall l3. The inherent stability of the articles I! may be regarded as holding them upright, and they coact with the alining means 26 to keep the latter vertical. One of the articles l1 may be regarded as a weighted member permanently or removably connected in a holder element v34. If desired, the alining member 26 may be folded down upon the side wall H as shown. i
To close the toilet kit, the side walls ll, l2 are folded upward, and while the holding points 43 are then released from engagement by the marginal portions, the means 26 and articles I! are snugly nested in the receptacle, and when the toilet kit is opened, the marginal portions l8 immediately engage and secure the portions 43.
In Figs. 8 and 9 is shown a modification similar to the device It] except that the article holding means 46 is of a relatively stiff tubular form permanently open at its opposite ends 41, and having a plurality of spaced openings 48 on the top thereof for receiving containers I! upright. The means 45 may lie between the fold lines 49 and may have inturned longitudinal flanges 50 over which the inturned ends 5| of the marginal portions l8 may lie to'be secured by staples 52 accessible through the open ends of the tube. The staples 52 as well as those at 38 may be of an ornamental character if desired, so that the staples can be fully exposed, even at opposite sides of the edge walls through which they may pass.
