Description

' DUPLEX FASTENER Filed March 26, 1934 f1 Homey Invenior Patented Apr. 30, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application March 26,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a duplex fastener for fastening together several sheets of paper or the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a flexible member having a strip of metal a 5 first bent into U-shape and passed through the member, after which portions of the metal strip are bent against the opposite face of the member and then the end portions of the metal strip are bent and extended at right angles to form a pointed stem for entering the sheets or other articles, with the rear face of the member coa'ted with adhesive so that this member can be attached to a supporting member or the like.
This invention also consists in certain other l5 features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:--
Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in use for holding several sheets of material to a cover member.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary View, showing the invention applied to a folder or cover. Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Figure 2. Figure 4 is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 5 is a View looking toward the rear face of the device.
In this drawing, the numeral l indicates a disk of suitable material, such as paper, fabric or the like, and the numeral 2 indicates a small metal strip which is rst bent into U-shape with its limbs pressed through the disk, with the bight 3 of the strip engaging the rear face of the disk, y
after which the strip is bent inwardly to provide the twoparts l which contact the outer face of the disk and extend parallel to the bight part 3 and then the two end portions of the metal strip are bent at right angles outwardly from the disk to form the two contacting stem portions 5, the 45 ends of which are pointed. An adhesive coating is placed on the rear face of the disk, as shown at 6, and in the process of manufacture, after the metal strip is folded, as shown, considerable pres- 1934, serial No. 717,526
sure is applied to the parts so as to press the bight part 3 and the parts 4 into the disk. This makes the completed device flat and rigid.
This device can be used for various'purposes, such as holding sheetsA A in a folder or cover B, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, or it can be used for attaching one or more sheets to another sheet.
As will be understood, the coated side of the disk is moistened and stuck to the supporting member and the sheets or other articles toV be attached to the supporting member are pressed against the stem forming parts 5 so that the stem will pass through the sheets, after which the two parts of the stem are bent over to hold the sheets in position, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. A fastening device of the class described comprising a piece of material and a metal strip bent into U-shape with its limbs passing through the piece of material, with the bight part of the metal strip contacting one face of the piece and the inner portions of the limbs being bent toward each other to Contact the other face of the piece, the end portions extending a right angles from the piece and contacting each other to form a two-part bendable stem, the outer end of which is pointed, said bight portion and those portions which contact the outer face of the piece being pressed into the piece.
2. A fastening device of the class described comprising a piece of material and a strip bent into substantial U-shape with its limbs passing through the piece of material, with the bight part of the strip contacting and being pressed into one face of the piece and the inner portions of the limbs being bent toward each other to contact the other face of the piece and being pressed thereinto, the end portions extending outwardly from said other face alongside of each other.
