5 liquid onto pulp, while' the saine is being carried through a'paper making machine upon the usual 'Fourdrinier wire so that the merging of these charges of pulp and-liquid will produce a cloud effect or mottled ,or variegated surface to the sheet paper form.
An object 'of the invention is to provide a machine for producing mottled or variegated paper so that the finished paper will present a cloud effect, the machine being of novel construction so that the liquid delivered to the paper pulp conveyed through the machine will be rained upon the pulp and the quantity of such liquid maintained at determined level in its container, the liquid being any paper flller of high opacity such as zinc oxide, titanium oxide, their sulphides, or asbestine, suspended in water, either alone or with dye.
Another object of the inventio is to provide a machine of the kind described s that a supply of fluid in aplurality of streams or drops will be directed onto pulp when traveling through the machine, inorder to break up the continuity or even upper surface of this pulp, whereby the finished paper product will he possessed of mottled or variegated efiect.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of con-' struction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
which disclose the preferred embodiment of theinvention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanyingdrawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a paper making machine constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the manner of carrying out the method of producing mottled or variegated paper.
Figure 2 is a. fragmentary top plan view.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view.
- Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings. e
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates the usual Fourdrinier wire of a paper making machine, with the ordinary supporting beams therefor as the rollers III,. II and l2 and the breast and couch rollers l3 Coacting with the wire A is the deckle strap 05 which runs over the wheels l5 and H andis in contact with the wire A. The pulp is flowed onto the wire A in the usual manner and is then "conveyed through the paper making machine conventionally.
Located above the wire A is a trough l8 preferably the width of the wire and having the rounded bottom it with a discharge mouth 28 receded from one end, which is regulated or controlled by an adjustable gate 2 I. Into this trough iBjis received the fluid to be rained onto the pulp carried by the wire A for producing mottled or variegated paper in the finished product.
Leading from one side of the trough I8 at the selected point above the lowermost portion of the trough or its bottom i9 is an overflow leveling pipe 22 having and 24, respectively, the lowermost branch being .provided with a cut-ofl valve 25 and such branches open into the trough It. The pipe 22 opens into a tank -26 carrying the supply of fluid for thetrough l8.
Located adjacent to the receptacle 26 he fluid pump 21, the same having the in lead 28 extended into the receptacle 26 and the out lead 29 opening into the fluid from the receptacle 26 to the trough l8 can be had in the operation of the pump 21.
The trough i8 is carried by the supports 30 elevated from the wire A.
Working within the trough I8 is a rotary brush 3| having the prongs 32, these being staggered with respect to each other, and the axle 33 oflthe brush is suitably journaled and operated from a power source, the prongs being adapted to enter the liquid within the trough l8 at varying depths to produce heavy or light eifect in the mottling or variegating operation of the machine, the level of the liquid within the trough l8 being controlled by the several overflow branches 23 and 24 of pipe 22. The gate 2! when raised or lowered will vary the total amount of raining of the liquid onto the pulp upon the wire A. This liquid as contained within the trough l8 may be any paper and M, respectively.
the superposed branches 23 trough 18 so thata forced feed of the L in the trough i8 and the raining of such liquid being had by the brush 3!, so that the pulp will have intermingled therewith liquid, or such pulp will be diluted so that a mottled or variegated effect to the finished product of sheet paper will be had.
The method consists in providing an irregularly mottled sheet of paper by having the mottles of variations in color and opacity without variations in thickness or surface or printing qualities of the finished sheet of paper, the mottles being efiected by raining liquid upon the pulp being conveyed on a Fourdrinier wire.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a paper pulp conveyor,
receded portion in relatively close relation thereto,
a pump having a lead-in from the said means and an outlet opening into the trough, and a gate adjustably related with the receded portion of the trough, the prongs of the brush being radially disposed and staggered with respect to each other.
