The only dilference shown in Figure 4 is in glue application affording a convenient and desirable means of stiffening the packet at the same time that the parts are held together. It is shown as provided with spaced rows of perforations 33 and 34 to receive the matches.

The perforations 34 are shown as clean-cut round holes while the perforations 33 arepreferably star or petticoated perforations comprising short radial cuts that give inwardly directed petticoat aps around the match sticks when the match sticks have been inserted ,through these holes. v

Transverse strip coatings 35 and 36 of ignition material have been applied to theblank 3Iiby suitable prior operations and in such positions that, when the strip has been folded they will lie close to the perforations 34 on opposite sides of the match heads during the match withdrawals. Theythus are engaged simultaneously by opposite sides of the match heads.

The wrap of Figure' 4 is transversely scored at li'nesvofrfolding as at 31, 38, 39, 4D, 4l and 42, the short flap or match compartment front 43 of the wrap 3 I comprising the portion thereof to the left of the score line 31 and the long flap comprising the portion totheright of the score line 38 and including match compartment back wall 44', outer front wall 45 and outer rear wall 46,

` with the end fold sections joining the walls.

Usually the short and long flaps of the wrap are turned up along the lines 38` and 39 prior to the threading of the matches into the spaced perforations33 and 34 which then lie in line and Within parallel vertical walls.. This'position with the matches in place is seenin Figures 10 and 15. The short flap 43 is then turned down upon the inserted matches along folded line 31 so that the inside of the flap engage with the stick ends of the matches, (Figures 1l and 16). This short flap then lies parallel with the rear match chamber wall 44 between the two sets of perforations. This brings the strikingmaterial on the two aps into 'opposite positions and forms the stick-enclosing portion of the match chamber. The match heads project at the left end (considered as in Figures 4 and 11) and the spaceincluding these heads forms part Vof what I` have defined as the match chamber though in Figure 11 it is not enclosed.

In the prior construction of this packet ythe long nap was then folded down toward the left in Figure 4 along'the fold line 40 so that the'inside face of the packet front outer wall 45 engaged the outer face of the short'flapl43. The remainder of the flap was then folded, first on line 4| and then on' line 42 aboutthe'match heads', completing the match chamber by enclosing the heads,n except that both the head portion of the vchamber and the stick portion of the chamber are open at the sides.v Y'

Likewise inthe prior manufacture the inner face of the rear packet wall 46engaged the outer face of match chamber Wall 44. AThe short ` fold sections 41, 48 and 49 were and are used, respectively to form `the head and stick perforated end Walls of the stick portion of the match chamber partment and burns the user. This serious condition is corrected by the present invention, because cutting olf of the air from the head compartment of the packet greatly reduces the flash and the cover about theends protects the user from injury when the flash takes place.

In accord with the present invention, closures are provided for what might be termed the open sides of the packet chamber parallel' with the match sticks, closing not only the portion of the match chamber between the Walls 41 and 48, but, particularly, the head portion of this chamber which lies between the end walls 41 and 49.

The closure is formed by flaps which are or maybe fastened against the inside of one outel Wall and fold over in position to lie beneath and will vthen engage 'the inside of the other outer wall.

The aps or extensions shown may or may not be integral with the main Wrap and, Where they are not integral, may be held by fastening them kdirectly or indirectly tothe wrap. Where they are fastened to the wrap this may be done either before the Wrap issupplied for folding, While it is in the machine or during the packet manufacture and as part of its formation.

In theform shown in Figure an insert wrap is used separate from the wrap shown in Figure 4 and capable of attachmentto the wrap of Figure 4 either way, that is, either before the wrapn of y Figure A4 is supplied or during the manufacture.

The separate. wrap 32 is made upv of a body portion 50,'-closure portions 5| for-the sides of the `match chamberof the packet and flaps 52. Glue lines 53 and 54 'areshown @In the invention shown in Figures 4, 5, and 6 it is the intention to fasten the` parts together by strips of glue which may be paint-ed upon the mainwrap or insert Wrap as the case maybe or may be brushed upon it, affixed by rollers or appliedin any other suitable way. In any case the glue may be applied to both'wraps if desired.

A separate Wrap is shown in position upon the main Wrap and before folding of its aps in Figures 12 and'l'?. y i `Because of convenience `in the manufacture of the packet, the glue is applied to the rear face of the body 5S of Figure 5 to unite it to the inside face of the front cover. 45. I

, In order to fasten the upper (inner) face of the body portion 513 of the insert ywrap to the front Wall`43 of the chamber after ap 43 has been folded upon its companion Wall 44 and as both are folded upon the insert flap, glue is shown as applied to the outside face of this Wall at 55 that is to the outside of the short` flap 43. The naps 52 are then folded along lines 56 and 51 upon the section 44 of the main wrap and are attached to it by strips of glue 58 shown in the drawings as applied to the outside of section 44. Theseflaps 52 may be fastened at their outside faces Ato the inside face of the rear outside wrap 45 and for this purpose the glue 54 has been shown as applied to the outside of the flaps 52. It will be obvious Athat in each of the glue fastenings glue `can be applied alternatively Lto the other of the two facing surfaces instead of to that shown,`or to' both if preferred.

When the aps 52 have been folded in position the parts appear as in Figures 13 and 18. As compared with the packetof my patentv above the packet of Figures 14 andv 19 shows' an extra thickness. of. material .between each pair'of parallel adjacent outside main wrap walls, the extra thickness -between the pair of front mainv wrap walls'being. the body. of the supplementary or auxiliary wrap and the extra thickness between the rear main wrap walls: being the ends of the flaps 52 which may or maynot extend in considerable distance toward each other. Alternatively they may t inside merely enough tostay or be; heldin place, .or fit far enough in from` the sides toy meet. Between these two limits of course wide variation is permissible.

Spacingr of the strips or markings of glue shown in the gures givesfva maximum ofstiffness with a minimumy quantity of glue because the parts of the adjacent wraps between the markings along with the strips of rigid fastening, are effective as miniature beams. The spacing has a further advantage in that it leaves. unglued sections between glue applications, by which unglued ,portions the wraps. can be handled without getting glueon the applying mechanism. i

From commercial considerations it would seen to-be more desirable to makev the flaps 524 separatev fromthe main wraps seen in Figure 4, ap-

plying them for example in the packet formingA machine in some'such way as by the supplemental wraps seen in Figure 5. However, this isfnot es-v sential as the wraps can. be made integral with the, main wraps as seen at 52 in- Figure '7 and,v where separately attached, can be attaclfiedvin,v other ways of which an `example is given in Figures 8 and 9. l Here the flaps 522 areattachedby stubs 59 for example before the main wraps reachl lwrapped about the sides of the package and. be-n neath corresponding. generally tothe position of Figure 18. before or after the long wrap end has been turned down against the front wall of the match chamber. n

. In the illustration the long end of the main wrap has been turned down in Figures 22 and 27 and the flaps 52' have not been turned beneath the match chamber until the position of Figures 23 and 28. The long part of the `main flap is then turned down to form the end of the match" chamber and to the right, in counterclockwise di'- rection, to the position shown in Figures 24 and- 29.. y

In Figures 30 and 31 I have shown the use of f transversely extending spacedibars of glue to holdl l a packet together independentlyl of the meansc by which the lateral closure isk secured. It will be evidentthat my invention. provides means for transversely stiffem'ng the; packet whichv cooperates with a new closure for the open sides of the packet and 'is applicable to a variety of ypackets whetheror not the stiffening means is used also to yhold the packet together.

It will be further evident that where the stiffening means is used to hold the packet togetherv the greatest advantage. of my .invention is se` cured.

It will beI evident that the closure for the openv sides acts at the. same time as abale or fastening for the. entire packet, since it is united to/ v the cuter face of the back wall of the match chamber and to theinner face of the outside rea-r packetwall. It will independently perform thisv function whether or not it -be fastened-as shown--to-the outerface of the front wall of thematch chamber or* to-th'e inner face of the front wall. of the packet.

Having thus` described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

1. A packet ofthe character kvindicated andy comprising a wrap having spaced rows of perforations threaded by the matches Aand the wrap folded longitudinally ofV the 'matches from/the stick end perforations around the match heads and up to form apacket back in combination with a paper insert closing the sides ofthe match chamber formed by the folding of the wrap and covering the match heads. l l

2.A A packet of the character indicated and cornprising a wrap having spaced rows of perforations threaded by the matches and the wrap folded longitudinally of the matches from the stick end perforations around the match heads and up to form a packet back in combination with paper inserts, one at each side of the matchchamber formed by the folding of the wrap, and each insert having an intermediate portion closing one of the sides and having opposite edges covered respectively by the front fold and the back fold of the wrap. `4

3. A wrap blank havingfspaced rows of perforations, matches threading the corresponding perforations of the spaced rows, a short flap turned down upon thev matches, an insert extending and folded downwardly across the match cham'- ber and inwardly at the back 'of the chamberto overlap upon the wrap portion intermediate the rows of perforations, and a long iiap of the blank folded down upon the insert around the head ends of the matches and upon the overlapping portions of the insert to back the packet.

4. A cruciiorm blank having spaced rows oi perforations, matches threading the corresponding perforations of the spaced rows, a short flap turned down upon the matches, a long flap -having the lateral extensions that form the cross portion of the blank turned down upon the short iiap, the lateral extensions folded down across the sides of the packet and up upon the wrapped portion intermediate the spaced rows and the long flap folded around the head ends of the matches and up upon` the overlapping portions of lateral extensions. Y

5. In a match packet, a blank having'two sets of spaced openings, matches extending through the openings with their heads adjacent one set of openings, the blank being folded to form a matchhead compartment and a separate match-striking compartment, both of which compartments have double front and rear walls, flaps secured to the Jrap extending over the sides of the match-head and match-striking compartments and entering between the double walls and striking material on the inside of the match-striking compartment. 6. A match packet comprising a wrap folded to form compartment walls providing compartments for dividing off the heads of matches from the sticks of the matches, the heads of the matches being in one compartment and the sticks beyond the match head being located in a second compartment, ignition material upon the walls of the second compartment, the second 'compartment providing a striking compartment in which the matches are ignited upon withdrawal, and outer walls and closures for the sides of the packet separate from the wrap extending inwardly from the side edges of the assembled packet about the packet and between the walls thereof and glued 'to one of the outer walls to holdthe Walls of the packet together and at the same time allow for withdrawal of the matchesfrom the packet.

'7. A packet that includes a wrap having parallel relatively spaced transverse rows of perforations, matches threading the perfo-rations with the match heads adjacent the perforations of one row and the match stick ends projecting out of the perforations of the other row, and the wrap folded longitudinally of -the matches about the match portions intermediate the said rows, from' the head end perforations down about the match portions intermediate the rows and from the stick lend perforations down upon the first folded portion of the wrap, around the match heads and against the wrap portion between the said rows,

9. A match packet comprising a row of matches, a wrap wound around the row of matches continuously in one direction, longitudinally of the matches, across them, longitudinally of them, across them, longitudinally of them, across them, and longitudinally of them, so that the front and back of theY packet each have two thicknesses of wrap material, striking material on the inside of, the front and back walls, sides folded over and extending between the two thicknesses of wrap material at one wall of thepacket and glue between the two thicknesses of wrap material at the front and back of the wrap to secure the sides and tostiien the-iront and back walls.
