and out of sight and in this instance not connected to the to'p covering. The top pasteboard sheet holds the other softer, yielding sheets in place. The yielding edges of adjacent sheets l and 2 hold the surfaces of the U-shaped folds in contact so there is no open space between them when the mat is unfolded.y The open space Il) at the edge of the mat allows the'insertion of the turned-over edges of the lower covering and strip I2 Without increasing the thickness of the mat at its edge. x n *v The flap 5 laps over the edge of the table, and when the tablecloth is spread over the mat .its contact with the flap aids in holding the mat or sections in place.
While I have shown a mat with three leaf sec-- tions and the leaves foldable one on'another, the
section may be constructed so one leaf will foldV over and the other under the central leaf. Also the mat or section may have one'hinge only or a pluralitj7 Vof hinges. l J
What I cla-im is: v
l. The combination in a foldable rnatorv pad and with the adjacent edges of .two of itsfin' terior constituent parts, of a covering, and a hinge comprising two strips of flexible material one strip disposed beneath the covering at the meet# ing edges of said partsand overlapping said edges and secured to the surfaces adjacent `said edges, and the other strip bent to form a U-shaped fold with free edges, said U-shaped fold being located between the adjacent' vertical edge u surf aces` of said parts and secured thereto, and' the two free edges of the strip securedto the said constituent parts, one edge to each part. I
2. A foldable mat having a plurality of sections two of` which are united by `a hinge, said hinge comprising two strips of flexible material united longitudinally insidetheir outer edges by a rowof stitches forming four leaves, two of said leaves lying throughout their areas in the same plane and being securedfto the outer surfaces of the two sections, and the other-two leaves being bent from the plane of the first mentioned two leaves and their free edges secured to the opposite outer surfaces of the two sections; and a fabric covering having a U-shaped fold `located between two of said leavesfforming part of the hinge. y
3. The combination in a folding matf and with the adjacent edges of two'of `its constituent interior parts, of a hinge comprising connected leaves of flexible materialwith a commonlonf` gitudinal axis, two of said leaves'being secured to the opposite edge surfaces of the two said parts and lying substantially in the same plane throughout their areas, and the other two leaves bent to engage thevertical edge surfaces of said two parts, and their extreme edges turned outv wardly; and two coverings one of which has a lying in the same plane and being secured to the i adjacent outer'edge surfaces of said constituent parts, and another leaf bent away from the common longitudinal axis engaging the vertical edge of one of said parts and its extreme edge turned outwardly and secured to one of said constituent parts; one of said coverings being provided with f a U -shaped fold which is located between the vertical edges of the said two parts. .5. A covering for a table mat having a strip or strips of fabric, as I2, secured to its under surface `adjacent tothe edge of the covering, said strip or strips being adapted to secure the covering to the` body of the pad.
`6. A covering' for a table pad having a strip of fabric secured toits under surface inside the outerfedge ofthe covering leaving an extended edge ofthe covering to lap over the edge of an adjacent section of a mat, said strip being secured to the body of the mat. v v
'7. The combination in a foldable table pad, and with the adjacent edges of twor of its constituent interiorl parts, of a hingevcomprising four leaves of `flexible material lunited substantially along a common longitudinal axis, two of said leaves being` secured to the adjacent edge outerf surfaces ofsaid two interior parts and in the same plane when the pad is unfolded so the bending line of the hinge will lie substantially `at said plane', and the other two leaves bent downwardly from .said commony longitudinal' axis to positions between `the adjacent vertical edges of said two constituent interiorparts and their free edges turned outwardly in opposite directions and secured each to a separate constituent interior part, and two coverings, ,one applied to' each of the outersurfaces of the united and hinged constituent interior parts. l r
8. The subject-matter of claim 7 wherein a fold formed in the'material of one of said'coverings is located between the adjacent vertical edges of 4the twoV interior constituent parts when the pad is unfolded and removably secured in position, whereby a new4 covering maybe substituted for-oneworn or soiled at either surface of the pad without interfering with the hinge. 9. The subject-matterof claim 7 whereinsaid hinge yconsists of two strips of itexible material united longitudinally inside their outer edges by a row of thread stitches and forming four leaves.`
