Description

p 1935- c. L. MURRAY AUTOMATIC ADVERTISING DISPLAY DEVICE Filed July 16, 1934 Elm 0mm Sitwmg Patented Apr. 9, 1935 f UN T- STAT i a I 1,997,533
v y This invention relates to an automaticadver tising display device for use in connection with coolers'and refrigerators for bottled goods,;iceboxesgand other cabinets. 1
The primary object of the;presentinvention is to provide a device of the above character embodying an electric'advertising display sign adap-tedto be mounted within the cabinet and to be automatically rendered operative for displaying advertising matter to customers when the cover or door of the cabinet is raised or opened for access to thebottled goods or otherarticles therein." 7 e v p g v In carrying out the present invention, the il luminated display sign-is provided with a top wall having a light pervious display member'or sign and inclined ina forward. and downward direction to clearly present thejadvertising or display matter to the customer when illuminated, and the light source of the display sign is controlled by a switch located inside the cabinet and automatically operated to close the circuit ofthe light source when the cover or door of thecabinet is opened and to open saidcircuitv when said cover or door is closed. Further, the display sign is open at the bottom so that the light source of said sign will illuminate the goods in the cabinet to facilitate proper selectionlofthe .goods to be dispensed or sold, in addition to illuminating the displaymember of the sign;
A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic advertising display device of the above kind which is extremely simple in construc tion, efiicient in use, inexpensive to manufacture, and easy to install.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent fromthe following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts herein illustrated, described and l a In the drawing; v
. Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical section of a cooler or refrigerator for bottled goods equipped withan advertising display device constructed in accordance withthe present invention, said device being in front elevation. "Figure2 if a fragmentary verticalsectlon on the plane of line 2--2 of Figure 1. l v a "Figure 3 is a' central vertical, section of the display device per se; and p n I b Figure 4 is a plan viewof the sheet metal blank employed in constructing the device of Figures 1 to3 inclusive. 1 i
be dispensed from the body 5.;
1 Referring in detail'tothe'drawing, 5 indicates the opentopbody of an ordinary cabinet for the coolinganddispensing ofbottledor other goods, saidrbodyhavinga hinged cover or door 6 which,
when raised or opened; permits access to be had i to the bottled or other goodscooled within andto The present invention includes an illuminated advertising display sign adapted to bermounted within the bodyr5 of the cabinet against and adv jacent the upper edgeof avertical wall ofthe latterfsaid display sign including a metallic frame coris tructe d fromf ablarik' of the form shown m FigureQLand composed of a flat rear wall Ma -top wall 8 havinga large'central open- 15 ing} closed by a light pervious display or sign member In, said top Wall 8 being integral with the upper edge of the rearwalll and being in- ,clined forwardly and downwardly therefrom so that the display matter of j the light pervious 20 member lllwill be clearly visible to the customer when it isilluminated and the cover or door 6 of the cabinetis openedfand side walls H and l I a rigidly connecting, the sides of the top wall 8 with the rear wall 1. As shown, the side walls I l and lla are preferablyin thenature of substantially triangular wings integrally formed on Jth efinner side edges of the top wall 8 and havingprojecting tongues l2 and 12m passed through slots [3 and 13a of the rear wall land clinched v against the back of the latter so as .torigidly connecththe top and rear walls of thesi'gn and to effectively brace the top wall in its proper inclined position relative to said rear wall. The
.lightvperviou s display] member 10 is preferably 5 slightly larger" than the opening 9 in the top wall8'andsuitab1y' held inpla'ce by a rectangular frame'M embracing the margin of the light pervious member l0 andfastened in any: suitable way to the top wall 8 and about its opening 9.
Each side wall II and Ha; is provided with a central opening 15 in the desired one of which is rigidly mounted a lamp socket l6, and supported by this lamp socket is an electric lamp l1 arranged beneath or behind the top wall 8 in position to illuminate the lightlpervious member 10 thereof. Itiwill thus be seen that thesign is i .of;extremely; simple and durable construction with thebottorn'thereof left openso: that the lamp I] may illuminate the goods within the body 5 of the cabinet to facilitate proper se lecti'on of v i the goods to be dispensed or sold' from'the cab I inet. Integrally formedon the upper portion of therear wall Tare laterally projecting ears [8 to facilitate *rigid fastening of the sign flatly against the wall of the cabinet body 5 as at 9, and it is noted that the rear wall 1' extends a substantial distance below the top wall 8 and side walls H and Ha where it is provided in its lower portion with further openings it to be further secured as at 2i to the wall of the cabinet body 6. The depending lower portion of the rear wall I affords a mounting for a thermometer 22 below the sign proper for use in checking the temperature within the cabinet body 5 so as to insure proper cooling of the goods therein. (While 7 the thermometer 22 may be mounted in any suit-1 'able way on the front face of the wall 1 below the sign proper, supporting members may be stamped from the lower portion of said wall 1' for this purpose as at 23 and 24,; As sh0wn, a' thermometer tube is .used, and the graduations of the thermometer may be provided directly'on the front face of the lower portion of rear wall source of current bymeans'of an attachment cord 2?, and a switch 28 isinterposedjnthis circuit for controlling the lighting of lamp HI "The switch 23 may be'conveniently mounted on the inside of cabinet body 5 as -shown,'land such switch which may be of any well known or preferred construction' is of the. type shownin my U; S; Letters Patent No. 1,964,855, dated July 3,1934; wherein.
the switch is normally-closed andhasan actuating member 29 arranged in the path of the cabinet cover or door ii for opening the circuitof lamp I? when said cover or door is closed.
It will thus be seen that when the switch '23 is operated to close the'circuit of lamp H the advertising matter on the member, iii will be illuminated, while the interior of the cabinet body 5 and the thermometer 22"will also be illuminated. Consequently, when the cover or door 5 of the cabinet is opened, the advertising matter will be displayed to thecustomer and the goods within the cabinet will be rendered clearly visible for proper selection. ,As soon as the proper goods have been selected and, removed the cover or door 6 is closed and'the switch 28 is automatically operated to extinguish the lamp ii so that conservation of current not visible.
From the will be hadwhen the sign is V V foregoing description, it will be seen that the present invention provides avery simple and attractive device whicheifectively serves a three-fold purpose, namely, the advertising of goods or products, illumination. of the interior of the cabinet from which said goods or products are dispensed, and providing for'ready determination of the temperature within such cabinet to facilitate maintaining the proper temperature as dictated by requirements. Minor changes in thespecific details of construction. illustrated anddescribed are contemplated within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
