Application March 21,

This invention relates to an automatic advertising display device for use in connection with coolers and dispensers for bottled goods, ice boxes, and other like cabinets.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the above character wherein an electric advertising display sign is placed Within the cabinet, and wherein the lid or cover of the cabinet automatically controls the light source '10 of the sign so that the latter will be illuminated when the lid of the cabinet is raised or opened for displaying advertising matter to the customers, and so that said light source will be extinguished for conservation of current when said lid or cover is closed.
In carrying out the present invention, the illuminated display sign is provided with a top wall having a light pervious display member or sign which is properly inclined in a forward and downward direction to clearly present the advertising or display matter to the customer when illuminated, and the light source of the display sign is controlled by a normally closed switch adapted to be thrown to circuit-opening position '25 by the lid of the cabinet when said lid is closed.
Another object of the invention is to provide the advertising display sign with a bottom light transmitting panel so that the light source of said sign will illuminate the goods in the cabinet when the lid of the latter is opened to facilitate proper selection of the goods to be dispensed or sold, as well as illuminating the display member of the sign.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an automatic advertising display device of the above kind which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in use, capable of being readily and easily applied to or mounted within the cabinet, and inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view, partly in front elevation, and partly in vertical section, of a cooler and dispenser for bottled goods equipped with an auto matic advertising display device in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical section on line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
1933, Serial No. 661,984
Figure 4 is a vertical section on line 44 of Figure 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 indicates the open top body of an ordinary cabinet for the cooling and dispensing of bottled goods, said body being provided with suitable supporting legs 6 and having a hinged cover or lid '7, which, when raised, permits access to be had to the bottled goods cooled within and to be dispensed from the body 5.
The present invention includes an illuminated advertising display sign mounted within the body 5 of the cabinet against and adjacent the upper edge of the rear wall of the latter, said display sign including a casing 8 having a top wall 9 provided with a light pervious display or sign member 10, said top Wall being inclined forwardly and downwardly so that the display matter of the member 10 will be clearly visible to the customer when illuminated. Arranged within the casing 8 of the display sign is an electric lamp or like source of light 11 adapted to illuminate the light pervious member 10, when lighted. The bottom wall of the casing 8 is also provided with a rearwardly and downwardly inclined light transmitting panel 12 so that the light source 11 may illuminate the goods within the body 5 of the cabinet when said light source is energized, to facilitate proper selection of the goods to be dispensed or sold from the cabinet.
The electric lamp or light source 11 is adapted to be placed in circuit with a source of current by means of a cable 13 which is extended through a wall of the cabinet body 5 to the casing of a normally closed switch 14 which may be conveniently mounted upon one end of the sign casing 8 as shown. As is also shown clearly in Figure 3, this switch is interposed in the circuit of the lamp 11 so as to control lighting of the latter. While this switch may be of any well known or preferred form, it is essentially of a normally closed type having a member arranged in the path of the lid 7 so as to be actuated for opening the circuit of lamp ll when said lid 7 is closed. As shown, one terminal of lamp 11 is connected by a wire 16 with one terminal 17 of switch 14, the other terminal of the lamp 11 being connected by the other conductor wire 18 of cable 13 with one side of the source of current or electricity, the other side of said source of current or electricity being connected by the remaining wire of cable 13 with the movable contact 19 of switch 14, as at 20. The member 15 is in the form of a lever operatively connected with the movable contact 19 and pivoted for actuation of the latter, as at 21, said lever 15 extending upwardly so as to normally project above the top of the body of cabinet 5 a short distance. This normal position of lever 15 and engagement of movable contact 19 with stationary contact 17 is effected by means of a spring 22. It will thus be seen that when the lid '7 of the cabinet is raised or opened, spring 22 will elevate lever 15 above the top of the body '5, at the same time engaging contact 19 with contact 17 and closing the circuit of lamp 11 so that the latter is lighted. When the parts are in this condition, the display member or sign panel 12 will be i1- luminated so as to display advertising matter to the customer. At the same time, light from the lamp 11 will pass downwardly through the transparent panel 12 so as to illuminate the interior of the body 5 of the cabinet and the goods contained therein. When the lid '7 is closed, it will engage lever 15 so as to swing it downwardly against the action of spring 22, thereby causing contact 19 to disengage from contact 1'? and open the circuit of lamp 11 so that the latter will be extinguished. The current is thus conserved when the lid 7 is closed and the display sign is concealed from view. It will be seen that the present invention provides a novel and attractive advertising method and means which is simple, efiicient and reliable.
Minor changes in the specific details of construction illustrated and described are contemplated within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
l. The combination with a bottled goods cooling and dispensing or like cabinet including a body provided with a hinged lid, of an advertis ing display sign mounted upon the back of said cabinet body within and adjacent the top of the latter, said display sign including a casing having a light source therein and provided with a forwardly and downwardly inclined top wall having a light pervious display member adapted to be illuminated by said light source, and a switch controlling said light source and normally closed to eifect lighting of the latter, said switch having an actuating member normally arranged in the path of the lid for opening the circuit of the light source and extinguishing the latter when the lid is closed.
2. The combination with a bottled goods cooling and dispensing or like cabinet including a body provided with a hinged lid, of an advertising display sign mounted upon the back of said body Within and adjacent the top of the latter, said display sign including a casing having a light source therein and provided with a forwardly and downwardly inclined top wall having a light pervious display member adapted to be illuminated by said light source, and a switch controlling said light source and normally closed to efiect lighting of the latter, said switch having an actuating member normally arranged in the path of the lid for opening the circuit of the light source and extinguishing the latter when the lid is closed, said display sign casing further having a light transmitting panel in the bottom thereof to permit illumination of the interior of the cabinet body and goods therein when said light source is lighted.
