2, serial No. 641,938 I In Great Britain November 17, 19311- 7 {13 Claims. (01.15445) This invention relates to apparatus for fringing wrappers for use in connection with wrap-V ping machines. Such. apparatus repeatedly slits one or more of the borders of each ofja series,
of wrappers (which maybe in the form of a'continuous web) so asto'produce .a fringed effect.
It has. been proposed to provide fringing apparatus having; helicoidal knives which operate" on a moving web to cut a fringe in each of the two longitudinal borders of the vweb.
also been proposed toprovide fringing apparatus comprising a numberof disc-shaped rolls which are arranged in pairs on opposite sides. of the web and which are displaced laterally towards 5 the web and simultaneously rotated ;.to slit' the web as it passes between the rolls. I
According to the'present invention an. apparatus for fringing a series of wrappers com-p prises two sets .of spaced shearing members which are mounted with the members of each set opposite" gaps between the members of. the
other set, and operating means for moving one' or both of the sets to slittlie border of a wrapper: by a scissor-wise action. Preferably, each mem-.:
her is double-edged and co-ope'rates with the opposite members of the other set on' each side of it.
In one constructional form according to the,
invention the shearing members are formed each as a'separate part and are pivotally mounted on a spindle with the cutting edges of one set facingthose of the other set.
When the apparatus is arrangedto fringe a series of'wrappers while they are in motion-there is provided, according toa feature of the invention 'a support for the shearing members, which support is movable in the direction of travel of the wrappers and means for reciprocating the support so that it moves with a wrapper while the shearing members are slitting that'wrapperI According to another feature of the present invention there is provided a support for a wrapper and a pressure member operable to engage" a wrapper and press it against the wrapper support while the shearing members are'slitting that wrapper. The pressure memberprevents accidental displacement of the wrapper while it is being fringed and is particularly applicable to I apparatus which is arranged to fringe aseries of separatewrappers. Fringing apparatus constructed in: accordance with the present invention will now be'described, by way of example only, with reference .to the accompanying draw: -ings,'inwhich:,
It has Figure 4 shows a modified form. of the apparatus shownin Figure 1,

The shaft 22 is continuously rotated by suitable mechanism and as it rotates the cams rock the two sets'of shearing members towards one another while the web stationary, so as to form a plurality-of parallel slits extending'transversely of the web/ The cams then separate the j two sets of shearing members and maintain them 30 the web is fed forward to bring portion of the web into register The operationis separated while the next uncut then repeated. 7 I *In the modified arrangement shown inrFigs ure 4 the" web is fed-continuously by a pair of rollers 95 and 66. the' web being. drawn from a suitable supplyroll over a roller 64. The fringing device is identical with that described in;

' platform 82 able base 6! which is guided in a guideway 62 in a fixed base 63. The-base 6| is connected by a link "H articulated at; "to the end of'a lever 69 which is pivoted at 10. A roller 13 iscarri'e d;
by a pin 14 on the lever 69 and engages with secured to a continuously rotating shaft 68; As the cam revolvesit reciprocates the base Bl on which the fringing apparatus is mounted. While the fringing apparatus is moving to the right the shearing members are actuated to slit the web. The fringing apparatus is movedto the left while the shearing members are separated from one another. 1 r i The modified arrangement shown in Figures 5 and 6 is arranged to operate on-a series of separate webs. The fringing apparatus is similar in construction to that shown in Figurel but is mounted on a fixed base 8| The wrappers are fed through the fringing apparatus by a conveyor chain 83having pushing elements 85; The
conveyor chain is carried by a pair of sprocket.
Two levers 92 and 93 are mounted on the shaft I6. Each of these levers includes a downwardly extending arm and an upwardly extending arm which overlie the supporting platform 82. The upper arms 92 and 93 are connected together by two rods 94, the ends of which are fixed in the arms. These rods carry two pressure members 95 and 96, the pressure members being secured to the rods. The lower arms 92 and 93 engage against'pins 97 and 98 carried in the arms 21 and 28 respectively of the fringing apparatus.
'It will be recalled that the arms 21 and 28 are rocked clockwise (Figure 6) when the shearing members move together to slit the wrapper. Movement of these arms allows the levers 92 and 93'to'ro'ck clockwise also until the pressure members 95 and 96 engage the wrapper and hold it against the supporting platform 82. The arms 92 and 93mayrock clockwise under their. own weight or their movement may be assisted by a suitable spring When the shearing members move apart the pins 91 and 98 will engage the arms 92 and 93 and raise the pressure members 95 and 96 away from. the wrapper.
