SHELF TRIMMING Filed Feb. 5, 1954 Patented pr. i 9, `1935 SHELF 'mIMMING Moses Caplan, Boston, Y.Mass
Application February 5 Y 4c1aims.
This invention relates to shelf trimmings for china closets, pantriesand the like, and'aims to provide a novel trimming having a vshelf top covering and a shelf edge covering section, that 5 will naturally tend to stay Vin positionon the shelf, without being tacked'or otherwise fastened,
and resist the usual inclination to slide out of positionron the shelf edge.
In the drawing of one embodiment of my in- 'vention illustrated and described herein:
Figs. 1,2, 3, illustrate an exemplified plan, and a front edge and sectional views, respectively, partly broken 4away forconveniencej Figs. 4, 5 and 6, illustrate similaryiews, re-V spectively, of a modified form;-
Fig. 7 is a figure'similar'to Fig. 3, of a still further form of construction; and l Fig. 8, a still vfurther modified form of the invention. f f
While shelf trimmings of -various kinds have long been used, yet the usual form has comprised one or more sheets of material of suitable width, adapted to overlie the shelf front edge and hang down more or less closely to the front shelf edge, usuallyY in an outward curve from the shelf edge.
These trimmings have had a tendency to slide on the shelf top, and thus get out of position, which tendency it is oneobject of my invention to overcome.
Referring rst to Figs. l to 3, my novel trimming comprises a shelf top covering section I, of either one or more thicknesses, herein one, of any suitable material as oil cloth, textile fabi ric, paper, or the like, to the front edge 2 of which is secured, in any manner, as by stitches 3, a strip of flexible binding 4.
This binding may comprise either two pliesV 5, 6, formed by folding Ythe binding o-r bonding f strip 4 lengthwise to provide a smooth, rear edge 1, or a single layer 5, with a selvage, may be used, if preferred. This ply 5 is then carried down vertically against the shelf cover edge, and then 50 or ply I0 may, Fig, 7, end at the edge of the 55 folded and turned upward and parallel thereto y,
sheet I, and a new sheet I2 of similar or different `material or color, be laid parallel with ply I0,
and in either case turned down against the edges of plies Sand I0, as ply I3. This ply is then l-top of the' front edge-.sheet I5, ythe latter havingV -anextraply I6, -if-preferred, andiaga'in dropped down as ply I'I`,|`sub stantiallyi parallel with the shelf edge Ir8,-and
stitched or otherwise's'ecu'red to'theifro'nt edge plies I5, I6, as at afer, if preferred for any rea-f' son, again folded-and turned upward as p'ly'l9, as being more secure.
1t willl be noted that this form;v
provides a reinforced front edge vtrimming struc-f1 turerpreferablyrof atleasttwo pliesof binding'` upon the 'upper vand lower faces of the "shelfcover sheet 'I, a fleXiblajhin'ge-like ply I3`for the shelf 'edge' cover 5,- permittingfthe latter to" naturallyV dropY straight down and'lief closely against the shelf edge, and form a joint'or bond in the bindingof such naturefth'at the shelf top cover-I and shelf edge material I5`readilylconform to the shelf outline, vwith no Vtendency to -move either Way about the shelf corner` 20.
There is thusprovided a shelf edge trimming, comprising two multi-ply sections connected by a thin, as a single ply, section, that will stayin position, whereas thev usual trimming vedge will slide, or yield, so that the trimming easily becomes misplaced on the shelf. This trimming also may be made of contrastingcolor sections, as stated,or different kinds of material, and with the formation described present a bead-like edge to the eye.Y Y Y In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 to 6, n'-
f construction clusive, the shelf cover section I has on its edge the broad lower ply24 folded at its rear edge forwardly to form ply 25, which, in turn, is carried down vertically about the edge 26 of the Y shelf cover I, and folded rearwardly to form plies 2l, 28, and stitched as at 29, or otherwise secured, the latter ply'carried straightdown and laid against the frontedge of the shelf; forming the plies 39, 3|, the latter carried up over the edge of the shelf edge cover I5 of Vone or more plies, and again brought down upon the outside thereof with folds or plies 32, 33, stitched ,or otherwise secured, as at 34,.forming a cover bindingV with a recessed edge. y
This binding structure for securing in proper relation the shelf top cover and shelf edge cover sheets, may obviously also be used, Fig.` 8, tosef Y cure in right angle relation two sheets or core members 35, 36, for any purpose whatever, prof. `viding a novel binding structure with an out# standing bead 3l, corresponding to the top 'coverVY edge,. which structure may be subsequently ,y
VVsection, and a connecting hinge-likebinding strip member, comprising a top-cover-section-upperedge multi-ply binding area, a top-section-loweredge multi-ply bindingy area, both the topf cover Vedge binding area and the shelf top cover-extended forwardly ofthe shelf edge, the lower edge bindingV area extended rearwardly of the cover edge, and folded downward to form a vshelfedge-coVer-outer multi-ply binding area, and,v then extended laterally and downwardly to form' an edge-eover-inner multi-ply binding area.
2 Shelf trimmingrcomprising, in combination,
av shelf-top-cover-section, l av lshelf--e'dge-cover-t section, and a connecting hinge-like strip binding member, comprising a,top-section-upper-` edge multi-ply area; a top-section-lower-edge multi-ply, horizontal area extended rearwardly of the edge-cover-section, and folded closely to the cover sectiondownwardlyito form a shelf- .edge-cover-outer.multi-ply area and a shelff Y edge-cover-innermulti-ply area folded adjacent to the top section cover, and at an acute angle to the horizontal area to align the top cover edge in substantiallyparallel relation with the shelfV edge, with theltop cover edge and multi-ply areas forming `a yprojecting bead at the shelf edge.
3.' Shelf trimming comprising, in combination,
` Va. shelf-top-cover-section, a shelf-edge-coversection, and a connecting hinge-like strip binding member, comprising a top-section-upperedge multi-ply area; a top-section-lower-edge multi-ply horizontal area extended rearwardly of the edge-cover section forming an edge cover positioning structure, and folded closely to the cover section downwardly to form a shelf-edgecover-outer multi-ply area and a; shelf-edgecover-inner multi-ply area folded adjacent to the cover'secton, and at an acute, angle to the horizontal areas forming a top cover positioning structure to alignthe cover edge in parallel relation with the shelf edge, with the multi-ply top and front edge areas at right angles to each other forming a shelf trimming with a recessed edge.
4. Binding structure for securing a plurality of sheets of material to each other in substantiallykright angle relation with a beadvat the joint, comprising a horizontal core strip I with a sheet of bonding-,material thereon folded longitudinally on itself to provide an area of a plurality of pliesy El,l 6; the front edge of ply 6 turned at right `angles thereto and again folded longitudinally on itself ,against the opposite side of the core sheet providing a multi-ply area 9, I0, I I, said multi-ply area secured to the core strip; said latter ply II turned at` right angles, folded on, itself longitudinally forming plies I3, I4; and again turned at substantiallya right angle and then turned again at a right angle downward to form a multi-ply area I1, I9, a second core of strip material l5 secured between the I3, I4 multi-ply area and the IT, I9 multi-ply area either of said core strips with'its multi-plies constructed to he secured to a desired sheet of body material.
