GEORGE SCOTT, OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SCOTT, TODD AND CO., OF SAME PLACE.
STEAM-GENERATOR.
lSpecification of Letters Patent No. 19,969, dated April 1.3, 18158.
4To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SCOTT, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam-Generators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making partv of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan; F ig. 2 an elevation Of the rear end; F ig. 3 an elevation of the front or furnace end; and Fig. l a longitudinal vertical section.

My improved generator is composed of a coiled t-ube with each end beyond the coil brought in the line of the axis of the coil and mounted in suitable boxes so that the entire coil mayI rotate thereon as on journals, and in succession present every part of thecircumference of the coil to t-he direct action of the heat in the furnace below and the flue leading therefrom.
In the accompanying drawings (a) represents a metal tube coiled in the line of a helix, and with each of the two ends (b) and (b) left straight and in the line of the axis of t-he coil. These ends are suitably finished to constitute ournals litted to boxes (c, c) mounted in the ends (d, CZ) of the surrounding masonry or case. Below the front end Of the coil is the furnace (e) of any suitable construction, with fuel door (f), grate (g),1ire bridge (it) and flue space (i) beyond the bridge and leading to the chimney The furnace and Hue extend along the entire length, and along the under part of the coil, and the upper part is inclosed, to prevent the escape Of heat, by a double casing (7c) to contain water, and.which while it prevents t-he too free escape of heat at the same time answers the purpose of a heater to heat the water preparatory to forcing it into the coil. This casing is to be provided, in the 'usual manner, with a feed pump, and as the water is heated it is to be drawn therefrom by suitable means and forced into the coil as required. lVith this view the pumping apparatus, which-is to take the water from the casing and force it into the generator, is connected with the outer or front end (b) of the coil by a suitable stuiing box (Z) to make a water and steam tight joint, and yet permit the coil to rotate. The other Or rear end of the coil parts in all (22) is in like manner connected, by a packing joint (m), with the lower end of a steam drum provided with a safety valve and other appendages.
Th-e rear end (6') of the coil carries a cog wheel (o) which engages the cogs Of a pinion on a parallel shaft (g) receiving motion from some suitable first mo'ver which will rotate the coil about one revolution per minute, more or less.
'As the coil rotates every part of the circumference is exposed in succession to the action Of the heat in the furnace and flue so that the heat will be equalized instead of exposing some portions to too high a degree Of heat, and others to a much lower temperature. ,y
I prefer to introduce the water in small jets through the meshes of a wire gauze disk (r) in the tube leading to the end (o) of thecoil and thence into the coil where it is generated into steam which finds its way into the steam chamber for use. But I do not limit myself to this mode of introducing the wa ter.
By my improved arrangement the water which is forced in always lies in the. lower' portion Of the coil to protect t-he metal from the injurious effects of the intense heat, while in succession every part in the circumference of the coil is in turn exposed to the intenso heat of the furnace.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting my claim of invention to the special mode of construction herein specified as this may be varied so long as the mode of operation herein described is retained.
I do not claim broadly the employment of a rotating coil as that has long since been known and used for various purposes, but
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The employment Of a rotating tubular coil, One end of which is connected with any suitable apparatus for forcing in water, &c., and the other with a suitable vessel tO receive the steam generated in the said coil, when this is combined with a furnace so arranged that in the rotation every part of the circumference of the coil will in succession pass over the fire, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
