1-Clalm.
This invention relates to improvements in folded blank boxes for use in packing and dispe sheets of waxed paper.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive box of the above character by means of which a pile of waxed paper sheets may be conveniently and eflectively I packed for storage or shipment, and wherein provision is made to facilitate removal of the sheets from the box one at a time when required for use, without disturbing or soiling the remaining sheets.
A more specific object of the present invention is to provide a box of the above character made of a one-piece cardboard blank of such form and -19, 1930, and specific objects and featuresof the present improvement will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of a folded blank box embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse section on lineHof Figure 1; and
' Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank which is folded to produce the box of Figures 1 to 4 inclusive.
The present box is formed by folding a onepiece blank of the form shown in Figure 5 which is cut from a single piece of cardboard to provide an elongated relatively wide top wall 5, relatively narrow side walls 6 and end walls 1 respectively integral with the sides and ends of the top wall 5, similar bottom wall sections 8 integral with the side walls 6, side wall reinforcing flaps 9 integral with the ends of the end walls I and coextensive with the latter, and bottom wall reinforcing flaps Ill integral with the end walls I.
In setting up the box by folding the blank of Figure 5, the side and end walls 6 and l are folded respectively on the longitudinal fold lines I] and the transverse fold lines I! downwardly at right angles to the top wall 5, the flaps 9 being folded inwardly at right angles to the end walls I 55 so as to lie against" the inner faces of the side walls 6 to reinforce the latter, each flap I being of a length slightly less than one-half the length of the side walls 6, so that said sidewalls are reinforced substantially throughout their length by the associated flaps I when the box is in set 5 up condition. The end flaps II are then bent inwardly to a horizontal position at right angles to the end walls 'I', whereupon the bottom wall sections 8- are bent inwardly at right angles to the side walls 6 and against the flaps II. It will thus 10 be seen that the flaps It engage the inner surfaces of the bottom wall sections 8 at the ends of the latter so as to reinforce the same and to provide an efllcient closure at the ends of the box. It will also be noted'that each bottom wall section 8 is of a width slightly greater than one-half the width of the top wall 5, or slightly greater than one-half the width of the box when in set up condition. Accordingly, the bottom wall sections 8 are slightly overlapped attheir inner free lon- 2 gitudinal edges so that they may be secured together intermediate their ends by a longitudinal strip of adhesive tape or paper ll. A tongue II is cut from each end flap II by providing the latter with a pair of spaced adjacent slits I5 nearer one end thereof than the other, and these tongues are folded upon the ends of the bottom wallsection 8 which has its overlapped longitudinal edge lowermost, whereby adhesive strips i8 may be placed transversely of the bottom wall 3 of. the box at the ends of the latter so as to overlie the tongues l4 and the adjacent portions of the .bottom wall sections 8 at opposite sides thereof to complete. fastening or securing of the box in. set up condition. In this way, the tongues ll are attached to the bottom wall of the box so as to prevent outward displacement of the flaps I0 and end walls 1 from proper set up condition, the strips Ii serving to cooperate with the strip IS in fastening the bottom wall sections in place.
Itwilibeunderstoodthatinpacldngapile of waxed paper sheets in the box, such pile of sheets is placed upon the top wall 5 when the blank is inverted, after which the several foldable walls and flaps are folded into place as 4 described. It is of course to be understood that the sheets of waxed paper have a surface area substantially equal to that of the top wall 5 when ready for packing. Accordingly, when the sheets of waxed paper are packaged or enclosed in the box of the present invention they will be effectively maintained in an orderly pile and in a smooth condition, as well as being effectively prevented from damage or becoming soiled during storage or shipment.
Suitable means may be provided to facilitate partialorcomplete removal ofaportionofthe topwallltofacilitateremovalofthewaxedpaper sheetsfrom theboxone atatimewhenrequired for use. without danger of disturbing or soiling the remaining sheets in the box. This means mayconformtothedisclosureinmyU.S.patent hereinbefore referred to, as shown. Such meansconsistsinformingthetopwalllwith longitudinal spaced parallel weakened lines I! and a transverse weakened line "connecting the intermediate portions of the weakened lines ll, whereby the portions ll between the weak-- ened lines ll at opposite sides of the weakened line II will provide a pair of closure flaps when the weakened lines are all cut entirely through. Theseclosureflapsareadaptedtoberaisedon transverse fold lines 20 to provide an opening in thetopwalloftheboxandpermitaccesstothe pile of waxed paper sheets within the box for the purpose above mentioned. Also, said closure flaps normally close the opening to exclude dust and dirt from the waxed paper sheets when not being removed from the box. Obviously, by weakening the top wall 5 along the fold lines II, the flaps I! may be completely removed if desired. An arcuate weakened line 2| may be provided in the top walls I adjacent the weakened line II and intermediate the ends of the latter to provide a small readily removable piece 22, the removal of which will provide a finger notch to facilitate opening of the flaps ll.
Itwillbeseenthatwhentheblank ofFigure5 is folded and sealed in set up condition as shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, a durable box will be had of elongated wide and shallow form particularly suitable for the packaging of a pile of waxed paper sheets. The blank may be readily and economically stamped from a single sheet of pasteboard, and when set up will provide a durable construction in which the sheets may be effectively stored or shipped and from which the sheets may be removed one at a time without or soiling the remaining sheets. Also, setting up and securing of the blank in set up condition may be accomplished with facility and efliciently without the necessity of any separate metallic fastening elements or unsatisfactory interlocking walls or flaps. Minor changes are contemplated within the spirit and scope of conjolntly extend nearly the full length of said side walls, bottom wall sections integral with the side walls and conjointly of a width greater than the width of the top wall so as to be folded with their free longitudinal edges in overlapping relation, and bottom wall reinforcing flaps integral with the end walls and foldable to lie upon the bottom wall sections at the ends of the latter, and longitudinal and transverse adhesive strips securing the overlapped edges of the bottom wall sections together to retain the box in set-up condition, said bottom wall reinforcing flaps being slitted to provide tongues foldable against the outer surface of the bottom wall section whose overlapped edge is lowermost, and said transverse adhesive strips extending across said tongues for preventing outward displacement of the end walls and the reinforcing flaps thereof.
