UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH F: ROSE, OF TIVERTON, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENT, TO HIMSELF AND BENJAMIN GRAY, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN NIGHT-CHIMNEYS FOR LAMPS, SLG.,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,578, dated January 22, 1878; application led July 9, 1877.
combination with a cylindrical collar which is adapted to fit over or on a 1ampburner, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawing, Figure l is a front i view of the night-chimney. Fig. 2 is a. diametrical section through the chimney.A
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The letter A represents the cylindrical body of the lantern, which may be of any required diameter and length; and B is a removable conical cap, which has secured to it three or more arms, a, that afford supports for a vessel, where it is desired to warm a iiuid. Surrounding the cylinder A, and resting upon a iiange, b, is a slide, C, having an opening through it corresponding in size and shape to an opening through the cylinder.
By turning the slide C, more or less light can be obtained 5 or the light may be entirely out off.
Inside of the cylinder A is a transparent chimney, D, the base of which rests upon the annular iiange b', formed at the upper end of a cylindrical collar, E, which is secured to the bottom of the cylinder A. This collar is designed to it over the burners of some kinds of lamps, and to secure the lantern to the lamp.
Lamps the chimneys of which are secured to their burners by lips and screws require a collar, G, with an annular groove, e, in its lower end. vSuch a collar is represented in Fig'.
2 inserted into the collar E, and may be re-v moved therefrom at pleasure.
Having thus Vdescribed my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'l l. A night-chimney composed of acylinder, A, circular slide O, removable cone B, chimney D, and collar E, combined and arranged substantially as described.
2. The combination of the removable grooved collar Gr and the permanently-fixed collar E with the body of the night-chimney, substantially as described.
