The present invention relates'to improvements in spinning machines as used in the manufacture of filaments of artificial origin, but primarily has for its object a novel method'and apparatus for collecting the filaments during the period in which the filled collecting receivers are being replaced by empty receivers.
In the type of spinning machine wherein is used a driven or drawing roller, the said machine comprises a plurality of spinnerettes arranged in a row, and each'spinne'rette is provided with two collecting spools or receivers. The arrangement is such that heretofore only one spool for each spinnerette was in use at any given time. When one set of spools was filled, the machine operator started the operation of the other set of spools, cut the thread issuing from each spinnerette, and placed the free ends of the thread thereon. It will be appreciated, therefore, that but one-half of the total number of spools were in operation at any given time. Such an arrangement, although it was inefficient and costly, had hitherto been considered necessary due to the fact that during the dofifing of the filled spools, the spinnerettes could not be readily stopped, but some provision had .to be made to collect the thread during the doiing referred to above.
Further, where drawing devices are used such as illustrated in the drawings, it has proven more than satisfactory to use a dofiing roller such as comprises the subject-matter of this application.
By so doing the necessity of the operator immersing his hands in the coagulating bath in order to retrieve the filaments for redrawing from said bath is eliminated.
It is therefore one object of the-present invention to provide a suitable means for collecting the thread either during the dofiing period of one spool or the plurality of spools constituting the spinning machine. This novel method consists generally in leading each thread over a take-up means which is removably attached to the respective godet wheels or driven means of each spinning station.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved dofiing means which by its novel construction may be readily and quickly attached to or removed from the godet wheel or driven roller. These and other objects will in part become obvious and in part be pointed out in the following specification taken in conjunction with the attached drawings, in which:

In the drawings, in which like numerals ,indi- 1O cate like parts, 1 indicates the back board of a spinning machine, and 2 the trough of the spinning bath 3 which coagula'tes the extruded filamerits. The spinning solution is forced through the supply pipe 4, then passed through meter pumps 5, after which the, spinning solution is forced through the'spinnerette. '6 to be extruded into the said spinning bath 3.
The filaments '7 are then drawn over the godet I wheel or driven means 8 andthen to a collecting spool or bobbin 9. In order that the filaments 7 will have the desired cross wind on the spool 9, they are passed through an oscillating thread guide 10 which is attached to the oscillating shaft 11 by means of an arm 12.
The godet wheel or driven means 8 is rigidly. secured on a sleeve 13 in any suitable manner, or such as is illustrated in Figure 2, by a nut 14 which is secured on the threaded portion 15 of the sleeve 13. The sleeve 13 is in turnsecured on the rotatable shaft 16 by means of a screw connection 1'7.
The sleeve 13 is extended out around the threaded portion as indicatedat 18 to form a hub extension whereby the doiiing means 19 may be mounted thereon.
The doffing roller 19 comprises a circular flange portion 20 upon which the waste yarn is to be wound. Extending outwardly and rearwardly at an angle therefrom is another flange 21,-the purpose of which will be more fully disclosed later. A sleeve 22 concentric to the axis of the doffing roller and extending rearwardly therefrom, is intended to be slipped over the hub extension 18. The sleeve. 22 of the doffing roller 19 has a plurality of slots 23 throughwhich are inserted T-shaped members 24; a circular elastic means 25 is placed over the heads of the T- shaped members24 and surrounds thesleeve portion 22 so that the inserts 24 always tend to press inwardly toward the center of the said doffing roller 19. Thus it is readily seen that when the dofiing roller is placed upon the hub extension 18, the inserts 24 will form a tight frictional en gagement therewith and thereby rotating the dofiing roller with the drawing device 8.
A knob 26 is loosely mounted in an aperture. 27 of the cloning roller 19, in order that the operator when placing the doffingroller 19 on the hub extension 18, will be enabled to retain a hold on the knob 26 and at the same time will in no way prevent rotation of the said doirlng roller with the godet wheel 8. The inserts 24 are bevelled at 23 in order that they may be more easily sprea apart when the dofiing roller is placed in position.
In operation it will be readily perceived that when the dofling of the machine becomes necessary, the operator merely places a doffing roller 19 onto the hub 18 of the godet wheel 8, cuts the thread and carries it over the dofling roller where it is wound during the time necessary to remove the filled spool or bobbin and replace it with an unfilled spool. The circular flange 21 which extends rearwardly at an angle from the circular flange portion 20 upon which the waste yarn is wound, prevents the thread from rotating back over the drawing device. A After removing the filled spool or bobbin and replacing it with the unfilled spool, the thread is then out from the dofilng roller 18 and carried back over the unfilled spool, whereupon the dofiing roller 18 may then be removed so that it may be used on another spinning machine, and also in order that the waste yarnmay be cut ofi andthe said doffing rollerjprepared again for use. 7 v
In order to facilitate the removal of the waste yarn from the dotting roller, a plurality of grooves 29 are cut around the winding surface 19 whereby a knife may be run along the said grooves cutting the waste yarn and enabling it to be easily removed from the said doifing roller.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited in the details of structure herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims.
What I claim is:
1. A take-up device adapted to be secured to a drawing device of a spinning machine, comprising a roller provided with resilient means adapted to contact with the hub of the drawing device to hold the take-up device in axial relation to and adjacent said drawing device.
2. A take-up device adapted to be secured to a'drawing device of a spinning machine, comprising a roller, a sleeve integral with and concentric to said roller, resilient means mounted in said sleeve adapted to contact with the hub of the drawing device to hold the take-up device in axial relation to and adjacent said drawing device.
3. A take-up device adapted to be secured to the hub of a drawing device of a spinning machine, comprising a roller, a sleeve integral with said roller and extending rearwardly therefrom, said sleeve having aplurality of slots, inserts projecting through said slots, resilient means contacting with said inserts and tending to force said inserts inwardly to hold the take-up device in position on the hub of said drawing device.
4. A take-up device adapted to be secured to a drawing device of a spinning machine, comprising a roller having a circular flanged portion for receiving waste yarn, a plurality of slots on said flanged portion to facilitate removal of the waste yarn, resilient means mounted on said roller adapted to contact with the hub oi" the drawing deviceto hold the take-up device in position on said drawing device.
