6'Claims. (01. 20641) The present invention refers to a cigarette-box or a cigarette-box holder and other convenient articles and has for its object to facilitate the taking out of the cigarettes in such a manner as will render this operation an easy one and prevent, the cigarettes from being damaged either by the fingernailaor otherwise, when handled by their owner or the individual they are being-offered to. I
The box or protecting case forming the object ofthis invention is characterized in that itmay slide along the cigarette-package, thus allowing of the cigarettes to be readily taken out since it offers them With'their ends freely exposed. As soon as a cigarette or cigarettes have been taken out, the case embodying the invention automatically covers the remaining cigarettes again.
In order that the invention may be fully understood and readily put into'practice, it is by way of example shown in the attached drawing wherein:
Figure l is a lateral elevation of the box or case in its normal position; Y
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the same, in opened and compressed position;
Figure 3 is a cross section through line. A- B of Fig. 1; V
Figure 4 shows the box or case while in ex- 7 panded, i. e., totally extended position;
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the case in a semi-mounted state, and 7 Figure 6 is a plan view similar to that shown in Fig. 5.
In the various figures of the drawing, equal visible parts are indicated by equal reference numerals and/or letters. Q
In accordance with the attached drawing, the device consists of two strips 1 and 2, of paper having a strong texture, as for instance, thin cardboard or of metal or other flexible material. These strips are in mutual relationship as 'regards the position they occupy in the cigarettepackage 3, strip 1 being placed longitudinally, and strip 2 transversally. I
Referring, in the first place, to strip 1, this is bent at its two ends, thus forming the edges a and a'. Two portions of both ends are, in turn, bent to the inside so as to form the two interior surfaces 12 and b' as well as the two exterior surfaces 0 and 0', due to the said folds being juxtaposed against the front sides of the package 3, as will be seen from Fig. 5, when a central band is furnished for the base of the said package to adhere to.
Strip 2 is slipped between the two surfaces b and c and thereby forms the transversal sheath, "with the central portion thereof being lodged within this cavity; its two ends I and ff are then made to pass through the cavity formed by the surfaces b and 0', when the surfaces will be interlaced," as may be gathered from Fig. 3, the portions 9 and g' of the said strip 2 covering the sides of the cigarette-pack age 3. r
It will be noted also that theedges a and a' prevent the strip 2 from slipping oif by itself longitudinally of the package 3 since it is hooked up on the said edges.
Theoperation of the device is as follows:
The surfaces c and fc' act as elastic members when the case is compressed'and the cross strip 2 is caused toslide downwardly so as to leave the upper portion open, with the end'sfof the cigarettes freely'exposed (Fig, 2) for in the preceding paragraphs we haveseen' just what connection there isbetween the two strips 1 and 2, such connection being determined by the fact that the second strip is lodged within the folds of the first one. The sliding action is thus brought about by simple manipulation. When the package is released it will become covered again, owing to the tendency of the surfaces 0 and c' to return to their normal position.
It will be further noted that the surface sfbv and b of the sheath will be shorter than the surfaces 0 and 0' when the case is formed,'whereby a difierence in length is provided as will be seen from Figs. 1 and 5, the object of the same consisting in limiting the sliding action referred to.
This box or case may be used by itself for accommodating cigarettes within the same, or it may be utilized as a receptacle for cigarettes already contained in any known class of cigarettepackages, in which latter case it would be suflicient for the package to be attached by any known means at its base to the central portion 2 of strip 1, to bring about the same effect. In the first mentioned case, a lid or covering consisting of any kind of strip or wrapping would have to be applied to the box so as to prevent the cigarettes from being sold open at the tobacconists, such lid being adapted to be torn ofi by the consumer when he wants to extract a cigarette in the manner just described.
If an ordinary cigarette-package duly introduced in the box or box-holder of my invention 7 were used, the consumer, as has been said, would simply tear off the lid whereupon he will be at liberty to take out .a cigarette during the operation of the holder.
I For example, for better practical application of the upper portion of the sides of said package while terminating short of the lower endvthereof,
and an outer strip extending beneath said pack age and extending upward exteriorly"upon two opposite sides of said package and said sheath to form upwardly extending flexible side members, which are retained at the upper edges of said two opposite sides of said sheathjin order toretain said outer strip in assembledrelation with' said sheathand allow compression of the case with consequent outward expansion of said flexible sideifoembers and lowering of the sheath upon the package so as to expose the upper end thereof abovesaid sheath, thesheathbeing returned by straightening of the flexible side members so as again to cover the sides of theupper end of the package upon releasing the casefrom comvire fi 2IA protecting case according to claim 1, wherein the V upwardly extending flexible side it member s 'are retained by the upper edges of the two opposite: sides of the sheath, by being folded in ardly over. said' upp'er edges and, extending do hwardly with said twoopposite sides of the sheath'and' terminating within said sides.
