Description

A. B. KINGSBURY.
Ash-Sifter.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW B. KINGSBURY, OF UTIOA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO WARREN RANNEY AND HIRAM RANNEY, OF MOHAWK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ASH-SIFTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,449, dated January 22, 1878; application filed November 28, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREWB. KINGSBURY, of Utica, in the county-of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sifters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to ash-sifters and the object of the invention is to provide a sifter to sift the ashes from the oinders and coal in the ash-pan of the stove without removing them from the pan, which I accomplish by means of an adjustable ash-pan holder arranged in a close box having a drawer to receive the ashes, and beveled guide-strips to direct the ashes into the drawer, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a top view, with the lid of the box raised and the pan removed firom the holder. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line or w of Fig. 1, showing the pan in the holder. Fig. 3 is a section on the same line w 00 of Fig. 1, showing the upper part of the box, and the ash-pan in the holder turned up in position for sifting the ashes through the hinged grate or sieve. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line y 3 of Fig. 1, showing the pan in the holder.
A is the sifter-box, having a hinged lid, A, and handles a a, and drawer b to receive the sifted ashes, and beveled guide-strips c, fast-I ened to the sides of the box, above thedrawer, for directing the ashes into the drawer. B represents the ash-holder frame, adjusted on bearings in the box, and provided with a crank, B.
0 represents a screen, made of wires or bars, fastened to a proper frame, or a cast grate, hinged to adjustable studs d, having stems extending through sockets in the back arms of the frame, which arms are provided with set-screws f, for adjusting and holding in place the studs to suit the depth of the ashpan.
The front arm of the frame is provided with an adjustable springcatch, (1, held in place by the set-screw f, foradjusting the length of the spring to correspond with the length of the studs, for holding the screen in a closed (shown in Fig. 3,) turning the pan upside,
down, and by an oscillating motion of the holder the ashes are thoroughly sifted from the coal and cinders in the pan, and descend into the drawer, the guide-strips preventing any of the ashes from falling over the edges of the drawer.
A stop-pin, c, is fastened to the outside of the box for the crank to strike, as a knocker, when the holder is turned up, to aid in sifting the ashes through the grate or sieve.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letterslatent, is-- 1. An ash-pan-holder frame, B, adjusted on bearings in the ash-sifter box A, and having a screen or grate, O, hinged to adjustable studs 11, and provided with an adjustable springcatch, (1, for sifting ashes from the coal or oinders in an ash-pan of a stove without removing them from the pan, substantially as described.
2. The ash-pan-holder frame B, provided with adjustable studs 01, for holding the hinged screen-lid O, to adjust the size of the frame to the size of the stove ash-pan, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW B. KINGSBURY.
Witnesses:
