Application September 7, 1933, Serial No. 688,515
2 Claims. 7 (Cl. 13112) This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in covers for the bowls of smoking pipes.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a smoking pipe bowl cover which in use can be manipulated to entirely close the bowl so that no ashes can fall therefrom when the pipe is placed in the users pocket.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a closure for the bowls of smoking pipes which need not be removed when the pipe is being used.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of the novel attachment.
' Figure 2 represents a top plan view of the attachment on a pipe.
Figure 3 represents an end elevational view of the pipe, looking at the bowl end of the pipe and showing the attachment applied thereto.
Figure 4 represents an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view through the bowl and attachment.
Figure 5 represents a perspective view of the annulus and threaded neck.
Figure 6 represents a perspective view of the cross memben' Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the numeral 5 represents the stem of a smoking pipe, while number 6 represents the bowl at one end thereof.
In carrying out the present invention, an annulus 7 is placed against the top of the bowl 6 and this annulus '7 is provided with an upstanding neck 8 provided with external threads .9. The periphery of the annulus '7 is provided with U-shaped ducts 10 which open at their ends through the periphery of the annulus and through each of these ducts can be inserted the end of an. elongated coil spring 11. Each of these springs 11 extends downwardly over the outside of the bowl 6 to connect to the corresponding hooked end 12 of the cross member 13, each leg of the cross member 13 being provided with a hook formation 12 at its free end. This cross member goes against the bottom of the bowl and obviously the springs 11 serve to center the annulus 7 and neck 8 upon the bowl 6. Numeral 14 represents the cap which is provided with a depending threaded apron 15 for engagement with the threads of the neck 8. The cap is provided with a head-like portion 16 having perforations 17 in the top thereof. Numeral 18 represents a 010- sure having a depending straight portion 19 flanged inwardly, as at 20, under the lower portion of the head 16 of the cap 14. In this manner, the closure 18 is swivelly mounted on the cap 14 and the perforations 21 in the closure 18 can be made to register with the perforations l'? by moving the closure 18 to a predetermined position on the cap 14. A boss 22 projects upwardly from the top of the cap 14 into the slots 23 in the closure 18 and this boss, of course, permits movement of the closure.
Obviously, after the pipe has been filled and the annulus '7 properly seated back upon the bowl 6, the pipe can be smoked by simply having the perforations 1'7 and 21 in open registration. When it is desired to set the pipe aside or place the same in the pocket, the closure 18 can be rotated so as to close the openings 17 so that no ashes or burning particles of tobacco can fall out and do damage.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
What is claimed is:-
1. Retaining means for pipe bowl covers comprising a bowl bottom engaging member in the form of a cross having arm portions, said arm portions having their extremities bent to provide hooks, and spring members extending'from the said hooks to engage a bowl cover and retain the same upon the pipe bowl.
2. Retaining means for pipe bowl covers comprising a bowl bottom engaging member in the
