Methods are already known of making containers in the form of cartons or the like, intended to hold cigarettes or like goods, by means f formers. It has previously been proposed to arrange the formers serially on an endless belt or another form of conveyer track, at suitable dista'ncesapart, so that in the course of their travel they contact with the blanks for the carton or the like, the carton being shaped on the former during the travel of the latter. In this method the problem arises of removing the finished carton from the former. Various suggestions have been made for solving this problem. Owing to the fragility of the work ithasbeen proposed. that the finished cartons be blown off the formers by means of compressed air; this, however, necessitates a troublesome compressed air apparatus, control etc. On the other hand, it has been proposed. to remove the carton from the formers by meachincally operated removing members, in such manner that the removal members which engage behind the cartons on the formers are moved in the operative direction of the formers but more'rapidly than the latter. Here again an inconvenient form of mechanism is necessitated, without its being possible to ensure that the fragile article will not be damaged.
Accordingto the present invention the former, which is carried in known'manner by a chain or the like after the carton has been shaped, is guided in a curved path and thereby brought into engagement with removal members which come into position behind the container on the sides of the former; in such manner that in consequence of the curvature of the path displacement of the former in relation to the stationary removal member takes place so as to cause the container to be removed.
In this case there is no necessity whatever for the removal members to be actuated, 'and the arrangement may be such that the removal members are placed tangentially or approximately so in relation to the beginning of the operative point of the curvedpath, so that the engagement with the cartons occurs without any shock.
Two oppositely disposed, bar-shaped removal members which are moved in relation to one another under spring control, are preferably .provided, and between these an extension of the former enters under moderate spring tension.
The removed cartons are deposited in receptacles which are arranged in sequence at suitable distances apart on a conveyer track, so arranged that a receptacle is always opposite. to the removed container.
Two forms of construction of the invention are illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which:-

The formers 1 which are four-cornered and rectangular in cross-section are mounted on the supports 2 which are pivotally attached to the horizontal bars 3. On these bars are mounted chain members 4, and in order to ensure rigidity and steadiness three chains are provided which pass over the sprocket wheels 5 which have the form of circular discs andare arranged'parallel to one another in a suitable manner. The arrangement is'such that the formers 1 always retain their horizontal position. The means by which this is-eifected has been omitted from the drawings for the sake of clarity.
The shaping of the carton blank 6 takes place on the former substantially during .the' time when these formers pass through the part of the circular path located at the rightof the vertical centre line in Fig. 1, so that a former, on its arrival at the uppermost position, carries a completely shaped carton.
According to the present invention two stationary removal members are provided which face each other and are mounted on supports 8. These supports are mounted on horizontal rods '9, which'are attached to the frame member 10 by means of screws 11 and slots 12 in such manner as to be capable of longitudinal displacement. In the supports 8, holes are provided I through which pins 13 pass which are screwed into or otherwise attached to the removal 'members '7. The springs 14 wound round these pins between the support 8 and the removal member 7, tend to thrust the two removal members tov wards one another.
The upper ends 7 of the removal members, which are suitably rounded oiT at the edges in question for the sake of easy engagement, are now placed in the path of a former 1 carrying the finished article 6, in such manner that they protrude tangentially at the point where they come into contact with the containers. The former moves with its parts located behind the finishedcarton, between the tworemovalmembers whereby it presses the latter slightly apart while compressing the spring 14. Consequently, the removal members rest lightly on the respective sides of the former.
Now gentle removal of the work from the former begins, because the latter moves on its further circular path relatively to the stationary removal members so that the carton is removed.
This removing operation is complete when the former has arrived at the lowest point in its circular path.
In order that the articles removed from the former may be deposited in an ordeixy fashion and further despatched, a conveyor chain 15 is provided which is indicated by a chain line in Fig. 2. This conveyer chain is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2. Receptacles 16 for receiving the removed containers are arranged at intervals on this chain. These receptacles are in the form of channels open at both ends, one side wall 1'? being formed as a flap adapted to pivot about the bolt 18. This flap is actuated in such manner that it is lowered when passed to the receiving position and forms an extension of the bottom of the receptacle. When the carton has arrived at the bottom of the receptacle, it is carried along by the other stationary side wall, and the flap 17 is raised in order to hold the work in the receptacle.
' In the form of construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the removal members are not designed as stationary bars, but as pressure members which grip the former, whereby these pressure members undergo a vertical rectilinear displacement.
In this construction, the formers I mounted on the chain members 4 are arranged at suitable positions to co-operate with the chains 19 which are passed over the sprocket wheels 20. On these chains are. mounted pressure members 21 which are provided with rubber cheeks 22 or the like. At the position marked 3: these checks come into contact with the container 6 on the former. While the formers 1 are moved down wardly in the circular path, the cheeks mounted on the chains 19 make a movement corresponding to the vertical lowering of the formers 1. Thereby the container is withdrawn from the former first of all slowly and then more rapidly and deposited in the receptacle 16 of the conveyer chain 15.
It is obvious that the chain 19 must run intermittently in conformity with the downward movement of the formers 1, which can be ar ranged by means of known mechanism, such as elliptic wheels or the like.
Having thus described the nature of the said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim:-
1. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a series of formers having cartons thereon traveling a curved path and stationary means cooperating with said formers for stripping said cartons from said formers by contacting said cartons simultaneously along the entire edges of some of the sides thereof.
2. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a series of formers having cartons thereon traveling a curved path and stationary rectilinear members positioned substantially tangential to said curved path for stripping said cartons from said formers.
3. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a former having a carton thereon traveling a curved path and stationary rectilinear members disposed substantially tangential upon each side of said path for stripping said carton from said former.
4. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving in a curved path-and stationary resilient rectilinear members positioned adjacent said path for stripping said cartons from said formers.
5. A stripping mechanism for cartons com prising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving in a semi-circular path, stationary members disposed adjacent said path for contacting the sides of said formers and resilient means urging said stationary members against the sides of said formers to gradually strip said cartons from said formers.
6. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving in a semi-circular path, extensions upon said formers projecting beyond the cartons thereon and bar-shaped stripping members mounted so as to contact said extensions and the entire side edges of the cartons and strip the cartons from said formers by the move ment of said formers relative to said bar-shaped members.

A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising a plurality of formers traveling a semi circular path having cartons thereon, extensions upon said formers extending beyond the cartons upon said formers, stationary bar-shaped stripping members disposed oppositely to one another, resilient means urging said bar-shaped members into contact with said extensions and means .for adjusting the distance between said bar-shaped members.

A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving in a semi-circular path, stationary rectilinear members disposed substantially tangentially to said path for contacting the sides of said formers and thereby stripping the cartons therefrom due to the motion or" said formers, conveying means and receptacles carried by said conveying means adapted to receive said cartons when stripped from said formers.
9. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving in a semi-circular path, stationary rectilinear resilient members disposed substantially tangentially to said path for contacting the sides of said formers and thereby stripping the cartons therefrom due to the motion of said formers, conveying means and receptacles carried by said conveying deans adapted to receive said cartons when stripped from said formers.
10. A stripping mechanism for cartons CO1..- prising a plurality of formers moving in a curved path and having cartons thereon, fixed bars mounted upon each side of said path, mounting members secured upon said bars and stripping members slidably mounted upon said mounting members.
11. A stripping mechanism for cartons com prising a plurality of formers moving in a semicircular path and having cartons thereon, fixed bars mounted upon each side of said path. mounting members secured upon said bars and stripping members slidably mounted upon said mounting members.

A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a series of formers having cartons thereon moving in a semi-circular path, adjustable the entire side edges oi -said cartons upon said carton forming means at a speed less than the speed of travel of said carton forming means and remove the same from said formers at a.
speed less than the speed-of travel of said car- .ton forming means so as not to injure said carton.
14. A stripping mechanisin'ior cartons comprising a plurality of carton formers traveling at a contsant speed about a curved path and stationary rectilinear members positioned ad- 'jacent said path and substantially tangential thereto to contact the cartons upon said formers at zero relative speed between said former and said carton thereon and then gradually increase the same to gently strip the carton from its corresponding former.
15. A carton stripping mechanism compris ing a series of carton formers having cartons thereon traveling along a curved path and Sta-- tionary rectinlinear members located adjacent said curved path and substantially tangential thereto: to separate the cartons from said formers at substantially less speed than the speed of travel of said formers around said curved path.

A carton stripping mechanism comprising a series of carton formers having cartons thereon traveling along a semi-circular path and stationary rectilinear members located adjacent said-path to separate the cartons from said formers at substantially less speed than the speed of travel of said formers around said semi-circular path.
17. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a plurality of formers maintained insubstantially horizontal position while traveling around a curved path and stationary means cooperating With said formers to strip cartons therefrom located adjacent said path and so contacting the cartons along their entire side edges simultaneously that the cartons are removed from said formers at substantially less speed than the speed of travel of said formers around said path.
18. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising forming means for cartons moving along a curved path having cartons thereon and endless means located transversely of the stripping direction cooperating with said formers for removing said cartons from said formers.
19. A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising formers having cartons thereon moving along a curved path, a pair of endless mem bers located adjacent said path and transversely of the stripping direction and pressure members carried by said endless members for removing said cartons from said formers.
20. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising formers having cartons thereon moving along a curved path, endless chains located adjacent said path and substantially tangential thereto andmeans carried by said chains for engagingthe cartons upon said formers to re' move said cartons from said formers motion of said formers. l

A stripping mechanism for-cartons comprising iormers having cartons thereon moving clue to the along a curved path, a-pair of endless chainslocated adjacent said path and resilient pressure members carried by said pressure chains for removing the cartons from said formers due to the motion of said formers.
22, A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving along a curved path, a pair of endless members rotating in opposite directions adjacent said path, pressure members mounted upon said endless members and rubber elements carried by said pressure members for engaging the cartons upon said formers and removing said cartons from said formers due to the motion of said formers. A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising a plurality of former-s having cartons thereon moving in a curved path, endless members located adjacent said path and moving in opposite directions, pressure members carried by said endless members for cooperating with said formers for removing said cartons from said formers and a conveyor adapted to receive said removed cartons from said formers.

26. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising forming means for cartons moving along a semi-circular path having cartons thereon and endless means moving at an angle to the stripping direction cooperating with said formers for removing said cartons from said formers.
27. A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising formers having cartons thereon moving along a semi-circular path, a pair of endless members located adjacent said path and pressure members carried by said endless members for removing said cartons from said formers.

A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising formers having cartons thereon moving along a semi-circular path, endless chains located adjacent said path and substantially tangential thereto and means carried by said chains for engaging the cartons upon said formers to remove said cartons from said formers due to the motion of said formers.

A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising formers having cartons thereon moving along a semi-circular path, a pair of endless chains located adjacent said path and resilient pressure members carried by said pressure chains for removing the cartons from said formers due to the motion of saidformers.

A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving along a semi-circular path, a pair of endless members rotating in opposite directions adjacent said path, pressure members mounted upon said endless members and rubber elements carried by said pressure members for engaging the cartons upon said formers and removing said cartons from said formers due to the motion of said formers.
31 A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving in a curved path, endless members located adjacent said path and moving in opposite directions, pressure members carried by said endless members for cooperating with said formers for removing said cartons from said formers, means for intermittently rotating said members and a conveyor adapted to receive said removed cartons from said formers.

A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving in a semi-circular path, endless members located adjacent said path and moving in opposite directions, pressure members carried by said endless members for cooperating with said formers for removing said cartons from said formers and a conveyor adapted to receive said removed cartons from said formers.
33. A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving along a semi-circular path and endless members located adjacent said path and substantially perpendicular to the stripping direction for stripping the cartons from said formers.

A mechanism for stripping cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving along a semi-circular path, a pair of endless members located adjacent said path and substantially tangential thereto for removing the cartons from said formers and means for receiving a removed carton.
35. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising a plurality of formers having cartons thereon moving along a curved path, a pair of parallel chains located adjacent said path and substantially tangential thereto, pressure members carried by said chains for cooperating with said formers in removing the cartons therefrom, said chains being so positioned as to strip the carton from the former at first very slowly and then gradually increase the stripping speed until the carton is removed.
36. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising forming means for'cartons moving along a curved path having cartons thereon, endless means-cooperating with said formers for removing said cartons from said formers, and said forming means and said endless means having such a relative angular motion that the removal of the cartons is accomplished by such relative motion.
37. A stripping mechanism for cartons comprising means for moving cartons along a curved path having horizontal and vertical components and endless means located substantially perpendicular to the stripping direction cooperating with said moving means utilizing the vertical component of the movement of said cartons for accomplishing the stripping thereof from said moving means.
