Patented Mar. 5, 1935 F I 1 UNITED. STATES PATENT.OFFlCEy GRILLE FOR AUTOMOBILE RADIATORS AND THE LIKE Lee B. Green, Lakewood, Ohio, .assignor to The Globe Machine & Stamping Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application April 20, 1931, Serial 'No. 531,390
g Y 4 Claims. (01. 293--54) I g g The present inventionrelating, asindicated, videdan opening 4 of suitable form to receive to grilles for automobile radiators, and the like, a motor starting crank.
pertains more particularly to a simplified and Asbestshown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the grille economical form of construction for that parbars 3 are substantially in the form -of a U- '5 ticular type of grille which is adapted-to be shaped channel strip. The binding clamps 5 .,;5
inserted between the radiator shell and core are adapted to be positioned over 'thefexte'rior an'dtoserveboth'as a protective and ornamental surface of the "bars 3 and to extend through attachment. suitable apertures in the base plates 1 and 2. One of the objects of my invention is to pro- The binding clamps 5 are permanently secured vide a form of construction which may be to the base plates by means of bending back 10 quickly and cheaply assembled while at the their end portions 9. A further securing means same time possessing the qualities of strength is provided by the laterally extending tapered and attractive appearance. I-Ieretofore such lugs 6 which are bent out of the face of the grilles have been fabricated in the form of onebase plates 1 and 2 at the point 7. The tapered piece construction which involved an expensive sides 8 of the lugs 6 are adapted to engage 15 stamping or casting process. It is a further snugly with the interior surfaces of the grille object of my invention to obviate any such exbars 3. It will thus be seen that the combination pensive fabrication methods. form which is the same as the contour of the Fig. 13' is representative of the form of base front lateral faces of the radiator shell (not plate 23 suitable for installation upon straight shown). Secured to the faces of the base plates front radiators. l and 2 are the vertically positioned grille bars The grille bars 3 may be frabricated from a 3. In the lower base plate 2 there may be procontinuous strip, then plated or enameled, and 55 finally cut into suitable lengths as required by the particular design, thus simplifying the process of manufacture and avoiding waste of material.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention: 7
1. In a grille for automobile radiators and the like, the combination of upper and lower base plate members, a plurality ofsubstantially vertical bar members secured to the outer faces of said base plate members, the vertical bar members being substantially in the form of U-shaped channel bars, laterally extending lugs in the outer faces of said base plate members adapted to engage with the inner surfaces of said U- shaped bar members, and compressible binding means for securing said bar members to said base plate members.
2. In a grille for automobile radiators and the like, the combination of upper and lower base plate members, a plurality of substantially vertical bar members secured to the outer faces of said base plate members, the vertical bar members being substantially in the form of U-shaped channel bars, laterally extending lugs in the outer faces of said base plate members adapted to engage with the inner surfaces of said U- shaped bar members, and laterally extending portions stamped out of the body of said plate members adapted to secure said bar members in position thereon.
' 3. In a device of the character described, means for securing channel bars to the face of a'fiat base plate comprising the combination of tapered lugs extending perpendicularly from said plate and adapted to engage with the inner surface of said channel bars, and compressible binding clips adapted to engage with the outer surface of said channel bars and with said base plate.
4. In a device of the character described, means for securing channel bars to the face of a base plate consisting of resilient projections extending perpendicularly from the face of said base plate and adapted to engage with the outer surfaces of said channel bar.
