The present invention relates to" web" printing presses and has for an object to pro de a novel arrangement of single impression andrnultiple impression printing-unit's.- p i A particular object'of the invention is top'rovide means for manufacturing a partly colored and partly black and white newspaper.
Another obje'ctof the invention is to provide an arrangement of plates in the printing units such that in a collect product) one section may be printed in" black" and another in black and other colors.
In carrying outthe'presentinvention; I Inay employ an arrangement of printingyunits' sinnlar-to that described in my c operiding'application Serial No. 512,029, filed January 29, 1931; wherein a single color perfectingpress unit is surmounted bya multi-color printingunit; the latter havingone'irnpression cylinder and'ai'plu rajlity of plate cylinders cooperating therewith; so that a Web passing successively through the two units will receiveblack irripr'essions on both faces thereof with color impression onone of said faces.
The present invenuan -reviaes a; mariner or plating twosuch combined units was to produce noveland attractive results.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear in the following' description'of a preferred embodiment and thereafter the novelty and scope of the invention will be pointed out in the claims. I V
The accompanying drawing is a largely diagrammatic side elevation'o'f an embodiment of my invention" illustrating a' typical" plate at: ra'ngement; I
Mounted'on a bed plate"is"aj set'of priming units A and B occupying a 10%? level, wh'fl'e at an upper level "directly above these units are twoprinting un'its'C andD; Thei'unitsAarid B are substantially alikeQ each being a perfecting unit comprising'tw'o p airs of printihg' couple's; The' first'prihting couple is" composed of afiir'n pression cylinder 11 and plate cylinder 12, While the second'couple is composed of animpressi'oir cylinder 13, and plate cylinder" 14'? Each'plate' cylinder isprovided with a novel inking system indicated generally by'th'e reference numeral 15'. A motor 16 is 'mounted'one'ach ofthese' unit's driving the same through a belt 17 running from aspro'cket 18 oh the'motor shaft to a sprocket 19 on the shaft of the impression cyl inder 11;
The units C'and D mounted respectively above the'unitsAand B, are alike, ea'clr'beingadapt ed to print 'aj'plur'ality of colors: Thus, eachof thymus-canen 'ccmprises an impression cylinder 20 cooperating with which are four plate cylinders 21, 22, 23 and 24 respectively. Each of these plate cylinders is provided with its own inkihg 'systefii" 25. of the units C and D is uriyen by the motor 18 directly thereunder through a belt 26' running to sprocket' wh'eel 2'1. The'latter reconnected through a reversing clutch, not shown,"tolthe' impression-wande er:
whereby said cylinder may be turned in reverse direction with respect to the impressioncylinder 1 1;
A'webW ispassed'tliroughthe units A and C, successively. The" web is-leadimm a suitable supply through a slotinthebed'plate 10,'about a'r'oll 30 to the firstprinting c'duple11 -12. The

Here the webt'passes inuthe' direction" of the arrow about the cylinder 20' to' receive in'ipressions from the 'platecylinders' 21, 22, 23iand 24; Thence, it is. guided by a'set of rolls ,36, 3'7, 38', 39, 40 and 41 to. a drag roll 42. vHere itcis slit by slitte'r roll 43"and one half web W after passingabout a, setof compensatingroHs 4411s passed uncler arol1j45 andthence over addrag ro11f46 tothe vfolderV4'7- .,,,,T.I.1'.e. other half Web vW is turned under the Web;W, ,by means of turn i s r 48 ndthen afterpa m ab u a et of compensating rolls 49'is led under a roll 50 to themes-" 0114 .t noth Webs 1 ma similarl pa d h ou h he n scBsand D lsue e iong H e l'n 12 1 ne i nlerl n m nt. shown n the drawing, theweb w is not lead through the printing couple l3" 14, but runs directly from the roll .3l to thei roll 32" ,and thence is carried clear-6f the" motor 16' andtb thei'uriitiD' i, After passing bout the imprew 511 er 2p ofjthe n t ef 'ile ito, dr' 'g' l, 1;. e e itis slit into'twc'rhalf webs-" and uii by means of a slitter roll 52. Hence, one face of the web W will receive impressions on successive sections from the plate cylinder 12, While the cylinder 14 will print sections of the other face of the web alternating with intervening blank sections. It will be observed that the web W receives impressions from the multi-color unit on the face which is printed by the couple 13-14. The plate'cylinders 21, 22, 23 and 24 of unit C are each provided with plates on only half of the cylinder and the position of these plates is such as to print only on the blank sections between the parts printed by the plate of cylinder 14. By this arrangement, it is possible to print the web in a single color, say black on one face thereof and on the other face alternately in black and in four colors. Ac-
cording to the plating of the cylinder 14 and the" cylinders 21, 22, 23 and 24 black or color impressions may be placed either on the odd or the even section, as desired. This permits of producing a very attractive product. For instance, four colors may be printed on the first or outside sheet of a newspaper, while the remainder of the paper is printed in black.
The plating of the units Band D is somewhat different from that of units A and C, as illustrated in the drawing. In the unit B the cylinder 12 is provided with two plates P, while the cylinder 14 is left unplated. The cylinder 21 of unit D carries two plates, while the rest of the plate cylinders of unit D carry plates on only half of each cylinder. ,By this arrangement, the web w is printed on one face by the couple 11-12 and then is printed on the opposite face by the couple 21, after which alternate sections, on the face printed by the cylinder 21, will receive multi-color impressions from the cylinders 22, 23 and 24. Thus, the web 1.0 may be printed in black on one face while on the other face sections printed in black alone. will alternate with sections printed in black and three colors. In other Words, the cylinder 21 may beused for printing in black. The usefulness of this arrangement is quite apparent. Should any damage occur to one printing couple of the units A or B, one of the cylinders in the multi-color unit can be used for perfecting in black.
The drawing shows four color cylinders being used for color printing in theunit C and three for color printing and one for black in the unit D, but it is within the scope of my invention to use any number of cylinders up to the limit of the color members as desired. Instead of using all four colors of the color unit, either one, two or three colors may be employed simply by the proper arrangement of plates.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is, as followsi V 1. A web printing press comprising, a plurality of plate cylinders adapted to impress the same face of a web, an individual inking system for each cylinder, a printing plate on one half of each cylinder, the plates being relatively positioned whereby one cylinder will print spaced sections of the web and the rest of the cylinders will print in multiple colors in the intervening spaces between said sections. r
