1 Claim.
This invention has reference to rope dies and more particularly to a die of the type used in the making or" Wire ropes.
More particularly, the invention consists in the provision of a die of the character above mentioned having improved means for applying lubricant to the strands from which the rope is made incident to the passage of the rope through the die for the purpose of providing a thoroughly and perfectly lubricated wire rope.
The invention, together with its objects and advantages, will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l is a detail View partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view through the die.
Figure 3 is a perspective of one section of the rope die.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, it will be seen that 5 indicates generally the die and 6 the strands which are relatively twisted about one another in passing through the die 5 to form the wire rope 7.
The die 5 includes among other parts a pair of complemental block-like sections 5a which in the meeting faces thereof are provided with complemental grooves 8 forming a channel through which the twisted strands 6 of the rope 7 pass.
In accordance with the present invention, the sections 5a of the die at the inlet end of the bore or rope passage 8 are complementarily formed to provide a substantially conical lubricant and guide chamber 9 which at its apex merges with the bore formed by the grooves 8. At the widest end of the chamber 9 there is provided an internal groove 10, and extending outwardly through the body of the section of the die, in communication with the groove 10 are oil ports 11 having enlarged threaded counterbores 12 for receiving fittings 13 through which grease or other suitable lubricant, from a suitable source of supply is fed to the groove 10 and chamber 9 for application to the strands 6 incidental to the manipulation of the strands in completing the rope '7.
From the above it will be apparent that the motion of the rope strands 6 in the passage thereof through the die and incidental to the'relative twisting of the strands about one another in the formation of the rope will cause the grease to be carried around within the chamber 9 and to adhere to the strands 6 for providing for a proper and thorough lubrication of the rope.
It will also be apparent that the invention can be used in conjunction with rope dies in such a manner that the strands are individually greased and the grease, incidental to a relative twisting of the strands about one another, will be forced to exude towards the outer periphery of the rope thereby filling all open spaces in the rope.
What is claimed is:
A die for use in the making of wire rope from relatively twisted strands, said die including a body having a passage therethrough for the relatively twisted strands, and being also provided at one end of the passage with a, substantially conical chamber, means for feeding lubricant to the chamber, said means including an internal groove" provided in said chamber and lubricant fittings connected with the die and in communication with the groove.
