Fmz. F165,
Patented Feb. 26, 1935 4UNIiVEAzD o* STATE s!! OFFICE COMBINED lSHIrPING DISPLAY v .PACKAGE o ,f AJamesJ. Jackson, Woodbury, N. J., assignor 'to Sandura Company, Inc., Paulsboro, N. J., va corporationof.NewJersey Application octoberso, 1933,' semina. 695,902
" ..41ClaimS. (015205-444)-v 'This .invention relates to Aa -displaypackage for decorative sheet goods` Heretofore it has been-customary in the merchandising of rolled decorative sheet goods such ,51 as floor -coveringsto stand the roll -on its end, the exterior winding of the roll' displaying the pattern of the decoration. 'Ihus the edge of that end of the rolled sheet goods that is in contact with the oor has been subjected to the l entire weight of the roll and as a result to a certain extent bent out of shape, and sometimes damaged by impacts incurred in moving. Also the outer winding of the roll and upper end are frequently open to dust and dirt and soon have is the appearance of being shopworn.
One object of this invention is to provide in a display package for rolled decorative goods, a sturdy container having a combined transparent protecting film and window extending around 9 0 the roll of goods to aord convenient display and inspection.
Another object is to provide a combination protective and display package capable of protecting the goods against dirt and breakage while yet insuring ease of inspection.
The above and other features are described and claimed in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a roll of decorative sheet goods illustrating the relative position of the transparency inserted therein; Y
Figure 2 is a view showing the transparency encircling the roll, and one of the tubes-in a final position;
Figure 3 shows the transparency bound in position relative to the roll;
Figure 4 shows the package in closed form for shipment; and v Figure 5 shows an enlarged View, partly broken away, of the complete display package enclosing a roll of decorative covering for either display purpose or inspection.
Referring to the several figures of the drawing 45 in detail, like reference characters identify like parts Vthroughout the several views.
The invention involves the useof two stout tubes 1 and 1a of card board or paper ber, each having one end open and one closed, a trans- .'.o parent sheet 2 called for convenience a transparency, and a roll of goods 3 with which latter the tubes and transparency cooperate to complete the display package.
Thev sheet of transparency 2 is introduced in 55 between the body of the roll 3 and theextreme end portion or last lap 3a thereof, as vshown in Figure-1.` ,In Figure -2 -the, transparency 2 is shown as completely encircling the roll 3with l both roll 4and transparency tightlyrolled The lowed to expand to the inside diameter of the tube 1, thus securing between the tube 'and the adjacent body of the roll the edge portion 2b of the transparency.
In order to prevent the transparency from slipping out of position, lengthwise of the roll, the former is secured to the roll by tape, preferably transparent tape, placed in position along its circumferential edge exteriorly of first mentioned bottom section, as at 4, Figure 3. The transparency is also bound down by similar means, part or all'of the way along its longitudinal edge exteriorly ofthe rst'tube l, as shown at 5 in Figure 3.
. The second section or tube la, designated as the top section, is then slidably fitted over the other end of the roll 3 opposite from that covered by the first or bottom tube 1, to a position over the adjacent end 2a of the transparency 2. Inspection position of the upper tube section is illustrated in Figure 5 in an enlarged view which shows a checked pattern on the decorative roll 3 as seen through the transparency 2. Invthis view theY longitudinal edge of the transparency or taped portion and also the longitudinal edge 3@ vof the roll is not illustrated, being on the opposite Yside from that viewed.
As shown in Figure 4, for shipping purposes the top section la is slid to such apposition that its inner end abuts that of the said first tube. The first or bottom tube 1 is already in its nal position and is not moved relative to the roll until the roll is unwrapped ,by the consumer. In completing the package for shipping purposes, the joint made by the inner ends of the tubes 1 and laabutting, may be sealed against opening by endwise Amovement of the tube sections.
What I claim is:
l. A display package for affording inspection of rolls of decorative sheet goods, comprising a roll of decorative sheeting, a transparency inserted between the body of said roll and the extreme end portion and encircling said roll, a pair of tubes the opposite ends being closed and the adjacent ends open, one end of said roll engaging the inner lend of one of said tubes and the Wall of said tube tightly embracing that portion of said roll and the adjacent edge of said transparency, and the other of said tubes being slidably tted over the opposite end of said roll and over the edge of said transparency adjacent thereto. Y j l- 2.- A display4 package for affording inspection of rolls of decorative sheet goods, comprising a roll of decorative sheeting, a transparency in contact With and encircling said roll, a pair of tubes the opposite ends being closed and the adjacent ends open, one end of said roll engaging the inner end of one of said tubes and the Wall of said tube tightly embracingthat portion of said roll and the adjacent edge of said trans parency, and the other of. said tubes being slid.-V ably fitted over the oppositeend of said roll and over the edge of said transparency adjacent.

v`3. A display package for aiording inspection of rollsof decorative 'sheet goods, comprising a roll of decorative sheeting,a transparency insertedbetween'the body-of said roll and-the vex treme end portion and encirclingsaid roll, a pair of tubes thefopposite ends being closed' and the adjacent ends open, one end ofsaid roll engaging the inner end of one of said tubes and the wall of said tube tightly embracing that portion of said roll and the adjacent edge of said transparency, and the other of said tubes being slidably tted over the opposite end of said roll and over the edge of said transparency adjacent thereto, said transparencybeing secured to said roll along its circumferentialedge'beneath said second tube and bound down along its longitudinal edge exteriorly of said first mentioned tube.
4. A display package for affording inspection of rolls of vdecorative sheet goods, comprising a roll of decorative sheeting, a transparency encircling saidv roll, a pair of tubes the opposite ends being closed and the adjacent ends open one end of said roll engaging the inner end of one of said tubes and the wall of said tube tightly embracing'thatportion of said roll and the adjacentedge of said transparency, and the other of said tubes being slidably fitted over the opposite endVV of said roll and over the edge ofsaid transparency adjacent thereto, said transparency being secured. to said Iroll along its circumferential edge beneathsaid second tube and bound downv along its longitudinal edge exteriorly of said rst mentioned tube.
