Description
L. KIRCHNER LIGHTER med oct. 19, 195s Feb. 19,1935.
PatentedFeb. 19, 1935 UNITED STATES LIGHTER Lon Kirchner, Mulhouse, France Application October 19, 1933, Serial No. 694,336
In France October 19,` 1932 v The presentinvention relates to lighters and more particularly to igniting devices of the pyrophoric type comprising an inflammable fluid containing receptacle in which is supported a torch and the torch being susceptible for use in the lighting of various articles such as cigars, cigarettes and the like. 'Ihe torch is provided with an adjustable and replaceable spark producing stone which by abrasion produces a spark for igniting the inflammable material carried by the torch. The principal object of the present invention is to provide a lighter of this character with aV supporting bracket capable of being attached to a wall or other support whereby the lighter will be immovably supported and the torch thereof being conveniently accessible for quickly and dependently producing a light.
A further object of this present invention is to provide a torch for lighters of the pyrophoric type. having a spark producing stone which latter may be easily and readily removed should it become worn or broken and which further may be adjusted within-the torch as it becomes worn in order that the stone may be'caused to assume the proper projecting position with respect to the inflammable fluid carried by the torch whereby the sparks given oi during the abrasive action of the stone will at all times come in contact with such inflammable `iiuid thereby readily and quickly producing a light or flame.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a supporting bracket for lighters of this characterin which bracket additional spark producing stones may be stored as well as an implement such as a screw driver for operating the stone retaining means contained within the torch of the lighter when replacing a worn or broken stone. v p
Further objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons indicates a suitable receptacle having its upper end open and a cover 2 detachably connected thereto. This cover 2 has formed therewitha cylindrical projection 3 which is adapted to extend down Within the receptacle 1 adjacent the bottom thereof when the cover is applied to the receptacle. Formed Within the upper face of the cover 2 is a depression which is arranged concentrically to and communicates with the bore of the sleeve 3, whereupon the inammable fluid poured within the depression of the cover 2 may flow through the sleeve 3 down into the receptacle 1.
Secured to the outer face of this receptacle 1 is a bracket 5 being of a U-shaped configuration in cross section and seated within this bracket 5 is a suitable abrader 6. This abrader 6 may be made of steel, having an outer roughened or le shaped surface upon which is to be rubbed the spark producing stone of the lighter for creating suitable sparks which will cause .the inflammable fluid carried by the torch of the lighter to be ignited. Also, secured-to the receptacle 1 atA a point opposite to the abrader 6 is one end of a hook 7. I
In order to permanently attach the lighter to a wall or other'suitable support, I provide a bracket 9, which bracket is provided with an opening in its upper and lower flanges whereby screws or similar fastening elements may be employed for attaching the bracket 9 to a wall or similar support. The body portion of this bracket 9 is of a hollow construction-and has formed in its outer or front wall a gap or opening 14. .Also struck from the outer wall of this bracket and arranged on the opposite sides of this opening 14A are a pair of straps or loops-8. The hook 7 carried by the receptacle of the lighter is adapted to be inserted through these loops 8 when attaching the lighter to the bracket and this hook 7 is provided with a tongue 7a which tongue is adapted to be seated within the opening or gap 14 of the bracket thereby securely fastening the hook 7 to the bracket. Seated within the hollow body portion of the bracket is a core or frame k15 dividing this hollow body portion into several compartments. Two of these compartments indicated by the numeral 16'are shown upon the drawing, 'and openings 10 formed within the upper wall of the bracket communicate therewith; The opposite sides of `this core tend within the compartments 16 of the bracket. By this arrangement it is quite obvious that a screw driver herein indicated by the numeral 13 may be inserted through one of the openings 10 into a compartment 16 'of lthe bracket until it rests upon a support 17a and the flexible tongue 17 in that compartment will engage the shank portion of the screw driver for retaining the same within the bracket. Whereas, in Figure 1 of the drawing I have shown a screw driver as being supported within one of the compartments of the bracket 9 it will be apparent that another implement similar to the screw driver 13 or a spark producing stone may be inserted and stored or retained within the other compartment formed within the bracket.
The spark producing stone as herein shown and indicated by the numeral 11 may be made of int rock or other pyrophoric material and secured to one end of this stone l1 is a metallic cap or holder 12 having a threaded opening formed therein. This 'spark producing stone is to be detachably connected to the torch of the lighter in such a manner as it becomes worn it may bev adjusted within the torch and when completely used it may be readily and easily removed therefrom and a new spark producing stone substituted therefor. As these spark producing stones rapidly wear with the use of the .'lighter it is always best to carry an eXtra stone and therefore an extrastone may be stored or mounted Within the supporting bracket 9.
The torch as herein shown comprises a central cylindrical portion 4 having a reduced 'threaded end to which is detachably connected one end of a sleeve 26 and seated within this sleeve is a wick 28. The outer end of this sleeve 26 may be split in order that when one of the spark producing stones 11 is inserted within this sleeve in the manner asillustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing that the outer split end thereof will hold the wick 28 about the exposed end of this stone 11. Connected to the upper end of the section 4 of the torch by means of the grooved cone 27 as herein shown, is a handle 24 and this handle 24 has an opening extending therethrough which is of greater diameter than the diameter of the threaded opening formed Within the section or sleeve 4 of the torch. A hollow sleeve 22 is rotatably supported Within the handle 24 and is retained therein by the ange 25 formed at the lower end thereof whereas, connected to the upper end of this sleeve 22 is a milled adjusting knob 23. Arranged within the handle 24 and having threaded engagement with the threaded opening formed Within the section 4 of this torch is a threaded tube 19. The upper end of this .tube 19 is provided with a milled head 21 which is adapted to engage suitable slots formed within the sleeve 22 whereupon' with rotation of this sleeve 22 the tube 19 may be caused to rotate therewith but this tube may also be permitted to vertically slide within the sleeve 22 and its handle 24. Seated within and extending through this tube 19 is a screw 20 .and this A screw is provided with a thread end having enis connected to the screw 20 it will be adjustably retainedwithin the torch bythe sleeve 22 but by inserting the screw driver 13 within the opened4 end of the knob 23 engagement may be had with the screw 20 whereby the stone l1 may be released from the torch. By turning the knob 23 the outer end of the stone 1l may be adjusted with respect to the wick 28 thereby making it possible to use the entire stone as it becomes worn.
The receptacle contains suitable absorbent material 29 which is lsaturated with the inflammable fluid fed within the receptacle through the sleeve 3 and the asbestos Wick 28 carried by the torch receives the inflammable fluid from this absorbent material. This sleeve 3 is provided with'bent openings30 and further provides a support for the torch. The user of this lighter by grasping the handle 24 of the torch may remove the same from the receptacle l and by striking the stone 11 against the abrader 6, will cause sparks to be produced which in turn will ignite the inflammable fluid carried by the wick 28, thereby producing the ame required. By again inserting the torch within, the tube or sleeve 3, the flame produced upon the vtorch will be extinguished and further inflammable uid will be absorbed by the Wick 28 where it will again be in condition for use. A plug .31 may be inserted within the opened end of the knob 23 for closing the same and thereby Apreventunauthorized persons from tampering with the screw that retains the stone 11 Within the torch.
Manifestly, the construction herein shown is capable of considerable modification and such modifications as come within the scope of my invention, I consider Within the spirit of my invention.
