Description

A. URIWAL INVENTOR ALI-0N5 UR/WAL Jul 1 ATTORNEY Feb. 19, 1935.
STR'AW HELMET HAT Filed Sept. 6, 1955 Patented F eb. 19, 1935' UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE- STRAW HELMET HAT Alfons Uriwal, Laredo, Tex., assignor to Texas Harvest Hat Company, Inc., Laredo, Tex.
Application September 6, 1933, Serial No. 688,342
2 Claims.
by a substantially elliptical brim having the edges turned down forming an inverted hollow shape, and a dome shaped crown having a hemispherical top and cylindrical bottom, with the bottom connected with said brim so that the center of the crown is arranged upon the center axis of said eliptical shape, but set slightly to the front.
Still further the invention proposes constructing the helmet hat as pointed out in the previous paragraph from straw woven into form and finished by the operation of die.
Still further the invention proposes arranging the die mentioned in the previous paragraph so as to form the crown portion and the bottom portion with radial grooves upon the under sides. It is proposed that the radial grooves on the crown portion constitute passages for the air within the crown portion to produce circulation. It is further proposed that the radial grooves upon the brim portion constitute reinforcements whereby th brim portion is rendered stifier. Still further it is proposed that the arrangement of the grooves upon the crown and brim portions add to the ornamental design of the hat.
. Furthermore as another object it is proposed to arrange passages in the crown portion of the hat to act as air vents, and more particularly to arrange some of these passages at the lowermost terminals of the grooves in the crown portion of the hat.
Still further the invention proposes completing the hat with a ribbon band, a bow and a sweat band.
And another object of this invention it is proposed to construct a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a hat constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary elevational view of the interior of the hat showing in particular the sweat band.
The straw helmet hat according to this invention comprises a brim 10 having its edges 11 turned downwards forming an inverted shallow shape. The brim 10 is substantially of elliptical shape in plan view. The dome shaped crown portion is associated with the brim and comprises a top hemispherical portion 12 and a bottom cylindrical portion 13 connected with the brim. The vertical central axis of the dome shaped portion is arranged upon the major axis of the elliptical shape of the brim, but set slightly to the front as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
The semispherical top portion 12 of the crown of the hat is formed with a hemispherical dome recess 14 in the under side. This recess is formed by pressing out the material so as to form a semispherical bulge at the top side. Furthermore a plurality of radial grooves 15 are also formed upon the under side of the hemispherical dome shaped top portion of the crown. These grooves extend down to substantially the top of the cylindrical bottom portion 13 of the crown. A large opening 16 is formed in the base of each of the grooves 15. The grooves are formed by pressing out the material of the crown portion so that radial ridges are formed upon the outside of the crown portion. Eyelets 17 are engaged into the opening 16 so as to finish the edges of the openings. These eyelets function to have their open centers constituting openings to vent the interior of the hat. A plurality of small air holes 18 are arranged completely around the cylindrical bottom 13 of the crown portion of the hat. These openings 18 serve to vent the forehead and other portions of the head of a wearer of the hat. The brim 10 is also formed with radial grooves 19 on the under side, forming radial ridges upon the top. These ridges serve to reinforce the brim to make it stiffer. Binding material 20 is sewed around the edge of the brim so as to finish the brim.
The hat should preferably be formed from straw which is woven according to any weave desired. It is necessary in order to manufacture the hat to substantially follow this process:- First of all, the hat should be woven into proper shape exclusive of the grooves and then with the moulded so as to form the grooves and the ridges and the recesses, all as previously described.
The hat is finished or trimmed as follows:---
There is a small sweat band 22 secured within the hat by a line of stitches 23. This line of stitches 23 also serves to secure down the top edge of an ornamental band 24 arranged outside of the hat upon the lower portion of the cylindrical bottom. A bow and buckle 25 is attached upon the band 24 at the rear of the hat. Preferably the lower side of the brim of the hat may be painted or dyed a different color. This adds to the ornamental efiect.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. I v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure United States Letters Patent is:-
1. In a straw helmet hat, a brim, a crown secured on said brim, said crown comprising a hemispherical top surface and a vertical surface depending from said hemispherical surface, a small raised portion in the top of said crown, inwardly opening grooves in said crown, the bottom walls of said grooves being raised above the surface of plane of said vertical surface.
2. In a straw helmet hat, a brim, a crown secured on said brim, said crown comprising a hemispherical top surface and a vertical surface depending from said hemispherical surface, a small raised portion in the top of said crown, inwardly opening grooves in said crown,'.the bottom walls of said grooves being raised above the surface of thecrown, said grooves extending radially from the periphery of said raised portion to points substantially on the vertical surface of said crown, said grooves having their bottom walls at their lower ends substantially flush with the vertical surfaces of said crown, and openings at the lower ends of said grooves substantially in the plane of said vertical surface, and metal eyelets disposed in said openings.
